The UK's first prison ship for 200 years could be closed unless an expensive facelift is carried out.

Ann Owers, Chief Inspector of Prisons, says the 400-capacity HMP Weare should be shut unless it is improved.

She said the ship, opened in 1997 off Portland, Dorset, is "unsuitable, expensive" and "in the wrong place".

Area Prison Service manager Jerry Petherick said an appraisal is being carried out on the facility but no decision on its future has been taken.
