Yup, my family and most of my close friends know I have online friends :) Shame I've kind of lost touch with most of them nowadays.

My parents are reaching that age when they start saying racist things and all you can do is just sit there and politely nod, so they don't have much interest in the online world. But I did mention a few times that I have online buddies, which lead to some pretty weird conversations. When I mentioned one of my friends is Muslim, the following exchange came up:

Mom: Oh my God, please tell me you didn't talk about war or Iraq or something because--
Me: Mom, he's a teenager who lives in the UK.
Mom: It doesn't matter, you never know how these people can react!
Me: ...

Shame I've kind of lost touch with most of them nowadays.
It's always sad when we end up losing touch with awesome people even though we have all this technology at our fingertips. I suppose it's inevitable that people just drift apart.

25-01-12, 15:59
If we're talking about strictly online friends, like people I only know online, then nope they dont know about them. Its not that I never told them, its that they dont care.
People I know real life and have online on FB or sth, yeah they know of some of them, but very little I'd say.

25-01-12, 16:11

They know I have them, but they don't know anyone in specific, nor do they appear to really care.

Which online friends?

My mother knows I spend my days and nights on the internet, she surely must guess something about my online activity. At least I'm not doing drugs.

They know of one who has actually become my best friend over the years. They just ask how he is from time to time. They've also heard of a few other good friends but don't seem to ever remember them by name since they've only had a chance to interact with the bestie.

There's a girl I met on Youtube like 5 years ago and we're really good friends so my mum and dad know about her. And my mum knows I talk to random people online :p She's not bothered. She's just always curious who I'm talking to. So sometimes when I'm on calls to people she's like "Who's that? Who is it? What are they called?" and I'm just omg go awaaaaaay xD

And my friends actually ask me how I meet so many people online! xD They all want foreign friends or whatever. I just say I meet them on YT and other random websites.

Yeah, my mum knows I have online friends. She's perfectly fine with it:D As does my dad, and younger brother. But they don't really care.

Regarding my friends that I have offline, I don't think any of them know.

Quasimodo
25-01-12, 23:51
It just doesn't really come up in conversation. "My friend from the internet said..." :o

Larapink
26-01-12, 00:48

Friends on TRF? Not really. A few of them, but they also happen to be on PSN or FB so then they know. But usually, I don't talk a lot about online friends to people. It's not that I'm ashamed or anything (I could care less what people think), it's just a topic that's not usually brought up very often.

Gracious Days
26-01-12, 02:01
I don't really have any close friends over the internet, so there's nothing to tell anyone about my online 'chatting'. My mother spends a lot of her time on a computer during the day, but she's not very familiar with online communities at all; she's very cynical when it comes to that sort of thing. Even when I'm 40, she'll still be telling me to watch out for perverts. :p

I used to have a lot of regular friends over PSN that my family knew of and was fine with for the most part, but we've lost touch and no one mentions them anymore.

I used to have lots more friends on the internet. My parents found out and it wasnt pretty... Although over time Ive lost touch with most of them.

I'm a little too old to be concerned about whether or not my parents know about my online friends. My one good RL friend knows about my forum friends, but no one else does.
