When you pay for a gallon of gas/petrol, you are not just paying for the gas/petrol. Countries & individual states have placed taxes on each gallon for a variety of reasons, mostly for raising funds to help local roads. Some countries/states have levied more taxes on gas/petrol than others.

By the way, gas cost $1.67/gallon in St. Louis as of Friday, November 5th. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/c-5.gif
