I can't remember exactly what my tutor at college told me when I was doing IT there. But he was saying something about their ways of giving those who need the bandwidth, BT tend to cap them or something. Meaning that they get less speeds than they deserve and should have.

Personally I haven't had many issues so much with their trafficking, but disconnections from the hub they provide can be annoying. Thankfully that rarely happens now :)

On top of that they're rip offs.

Okay, though maybe you can get a better ISP than the one you currently have, but first I need to know:

1.) Where abouts in the UK do you live?

2.) How much do you pay a month for your current ISP?

If you're willing to provide this information that is :)

Obviously a lot worse, although not the worst here. What's really annoying is the high ping. Websites often load fast, but they can take ages to start loading.

Not sure why they put Cologne as ~50 miles for one and ~100 miles for the other; the city is about 80 km (50 miles) away from here in either case. The mobile provider is T-Mobile (DE)

I don't understand what this PING thing is, though. :o

PING is a weird acronym that nobody ever bothers to remember. What they write here with PING is actually the round-trip time. That basically means: If you ask the server something, and the server replies as soon as he gets the request, when do you start getting the server's answer?

This is distinct from bandwidth (which is usually called speed). As an example: You can put all your data on an external hard drive and send it with an express mail carrier. That way, the receiver will have all of the data way sooner than with any of the internet connections here (if there is enough data). But it will take hours for the first byte of the data to arrive. That means you have an awesome bandwidth ("speed"), but a horrible round-trip time ("ping").

Fibre Optics should be dished out as soon as possible, though it is more expensive. Fibre optics is great since you can't interfere with the signal inside, which is light :) Not to mention they're thinner than a strand of hair XD

Unlike with coaxial cables you can interfere with the signal, so they can't transmit data across that effectively.

To the OP: If you wanted to find out someone's ISP; it's displayed in the picture, so it's kinda pointless asking them.

How so?

I've experienced problems with their call support service, they put you onto foreign people that have little experience in the field whatsoever and don't know what they're talking about, communication is hard at times too. They recommended us to do the most stupidest things to get our connection back after it mysteriously wouldn't work for a full month. We kept calling back and they were reluctant to actually send someone over to check the exchange and see if it was their problem, because they expected it was just a silly error due to our fault. However, in the end, it turned out that it was the fault of BT's, yet they failed to believe it. They could've just sent someone over in the first place and had it done with, but they had to make a big deal about it...

I can't remember exactly what my tutor at college told me when I was doing IT there. But he was saying something about their ways of giving those who need the bandwidth, BT tend to cap them or something. Meaning that they get less speeds than they deserve and should have.

I had a problem like this last year, I contacted them via email and they uncapped it a few days later and my speed jumped from 1mb to 8mb.

Yes, since they have to run a wire all the way down to your area, which is in the middle of nowhere :/
Obviously the further away you are from the exchange, the slower your speeds will be from the amount you're supposed to be given.

If they ran fibre optics down to your area instead, you'd have no problem with speeds. It's just that it'd be more expensive, though I don't know how much by :/

I did a module on Technical Support at college, there's different levels of support you can get:

Level 1, which is where the technician has barely any knowledge and reads off a script, which is shown on their screen in front of them.
Level 2, which is where the technician will have more knowledge on the subject, and may know some advanced knowledge.
Level 3, which involves the people who actually go out and sort out the equipment. Such as BT Openreach.

It doesn't have anything to do with the fact that they're foreign.
It's mainly to do with the fact that most foreign people who get employed in Technical Support, so happen to get employed in the Level 1 category ;)

But I do agree that BT Support is **** ;)

Mine isn't so great. I often have trouble getting Youtube videos above the standard quality to load at a decent speed. I can't believe some people get readings of 65 Mb/s! I guess you get what you pay for! (mine is free :p)

Damn, you people have fantastic net speeds. My grade was D- :pi: The speed is apparently slower than 80% of those in my country.
