Recently, british TV channel has been running a series called 'Make Bradford British' in which a young girl tries to figure out how and if the christian and Muslim populations in her town can live together harmoniously and integrate.

The program has shed light on many issues surrounding immigration, one of which is the 'British citizenship text' people applying to live in the country must sit to prove they know enough about Britain to be permitted to live here. But, as it turns out, even Britons have had trouble earning the 75% necessary to be let into the country.

So, are you entitled to live in the UK?

Take the test here (http://www.channel4.com/programmes/make-bradford-british/articles/channel-4-citizenship-test)

I got 9/24 correct. So dear friends, I am not entitled to live here.

I would be so screwed if I tried to get citizenship here... :p

Seriously though, you have to know how many MPs we have in the EU? O_O

I suppose it says a lot when those who live in the UK get beaten by someone who doesn't. :p

23/24 . Though that was after taking the test and getting 11/24, checking the answers, taking it again and forgetting the answer to number 7 resulting in the lost mark.

Aren't I smashingly intelligent?

Not really, if even british people are struggling to get the 75% then how are people of foreign extraction meant to? Or why should they? It's double standards. That is the point this exercise is trying to make.

That is the point this exercise is trying to make.I wasn't really commenting on the test, but rather that EU citizens can just walk into the UK no questions asked where as people outside the EU can't.

Is this test the only thing you need to pass to become a British citizen? I seriously doubt it.

jajay119
05-03-12, 14:32
No, this test is one in a series of checks. You must sit it before you are allowed permenant residency.

But the point is, why should anyone outside the UK have to get 75% to be considered as 'fit to be a UK citizen' when, as this thread proves, even many Britons cannot:tea: attain that grade. By rights the test makes foreign people who know this stuff more British than someone who was born here. That's the downside Channel 4 are making a point of showing. That discrepency that your knowledge of a country determines your ability to integrate successfully. It does not.

That discrepency that your knowledge of a country determines your ability to integrate successfully. It does not.I wasn't arguing any of this. My beef is with the fact that you don't have to do anything to come and live here if you're an EU citizen but if you're from outside the EU you have to do a number of things.

jajay119
05-03-12, 14:37
As it should so very well be, that is what the purpose of the EU community. Free movement and trade. You don't to do this in any EU country to my knowledge. Britain should be no different.

Also, I realise what you are saying but my beef is that no one should be asked to sit a test determining how British they are, whether they are from they EU or anywhere else, when british people cannot do it.

Edit: I don't know why there is a smiley in my previous post either

05-03-12, 14:39
Well I'm very much in favor of the UK leaving the EU.

I agree to an extent. I don't think you should be accepted or rejected from the country based on just a test.

I got 13/24 as well and I am from England.

Actually I think it is a pretty pointless test....you would be better off with a test on queuing, or war time spirit or the national anthem or monty python films! ;) i.e. The things that we think of as quintessentially british.

That felt more like a geography test as opposed to a definition of britishness.

I got 11/24.

Whilst I agree to some extent that there should be some sort of entry requirement, I'm not sure how many of those questions are relevant in making someone a law abiding, upstanding citizen.

As long as people show intent to work, pay taxes, and generally input into the economy, then I don't think knowing how many bank holidays there are in the year is necessary.
