Thief is a series of stealth video games in which the player takes the role of Garrett, a thief in a fantasy/steampunk world resembling a cross between the Late Middle Ages and the Victorian era, with more advanced technologies interspersed. The series consists of Thief: The Dark Project (1998), Thief II: The Metal Age (2000), Thief: Deadly Shadows (2004) and Thief 4 (TBA). An expanded version of Thief: The Dark Project, titled Thief Gold, was released in 1999 and features three extra maps and several bug fixes.

Looking Glass Studios developed both The Dark Project and The Metal Age. After the studio had gone out of business in 2000, many former employees moved to Ion Storm Austin and began developing the third part of the series, Deadly Shadows, long anticipated by fans of the series. Eidos Montreal was subsequently given the reins for Thief 4.

Anyone here play these games? As I literally discovered this series a few days ago, after looking around on Wikipedia and YouTube and thought it was cool. I've already ordered a collection of the first 3 games on PC, and can't wait to play them:D

1, 2 and Gold are extraordinary games, but a little stiff on AI, and it can really forgiving, or really stupid. When you look past that, the gameplay is VERY inventive and the level design in excellent. They reward players who want to drive right and get straight through it (minimal stealth) or those who want to travel around the map, explore a little, and get goodies.

The gameplay would NEVER hold up in a modern market, because modern gamers want faster gameplay, but if the market weren't so "things go boom", gems like these wouldn't have been buried, becuase they require too much thought (to do it well) and strategy.

Finnished all three when they came out. First one is amazing, second one suffers from rushed development (copied maps, boring missions). Third one is ok but extremely dumbed down in an annoying way. Also I remember there already was a thread for the series... I think EddieHaskel was the creator.

That is a lie. :p

The game is difficult, yes, but it's what you make of it. If you want to go through each level and not get caught, yeah, you'll fail a LOT, but if you want to go through each mission and blow **** up (which you can do, provided you have the money to buy the equipment, or you find it) yon can, no problem.

There is no better feeling than trailing an enemy in a brightly lit, marble floor hallway, and pummeling him with a blackjack, and hiding the body right before you get caught by another guard. :mis:

Good that they give you the option, but I'd definitely go in from a stealth angle, that's what the game's about from what I know of it. A certain degree of retrying is a given, that goes with the territory when you're stalking people, learning patterns and such :tmb:

It's a shame the setting puts me off.

Trust me, it's more than just big Steampunk buildings and victorian decor. I'll admit, there are a lot of those in the game, but at times, it does break way from those and give you more natural settings, even if for but a moment.

There's an entire level devoted to caves, one to submarines and water, etc.
Once you play, it's less about the setting, and more about the gameplay since you're so involved already.

And it definitely give you more to do than any other stealth game that's for sure. Your not just going from place to play killing people, or dumping bodies in room. Sometimes, you're encouraged not to attack at all, so you play an entire mission with nothing. You can pick pocket random townies, beat up drunks, be chased around town by 12 guards at a time (not lying at all), be attacked by ghosts. :p

Also, always play on expert. That is the only canon way through the first two games and you are forbidden to kill anyone most of the time :tmb:.

I find the setting in the first two games to be the best of any game, ever. The world is familiar and urban, and yet alien at the same time. It has a very uneasy feel to it at all times, I was eternally on edge and wary. This is as the game was intended to be sure, and because the designers succeeded in creating this on a grand scale the question is how was this achieved?

Certainly the graphics and the effective use of lighting are a major factor, and as the game is focused on the use of shadow, darkness and stealth this could just as well have been botched or oversimplified. The "steam punk" environment (as has been phrased here) is beautiful (in an effective, purposeful way) and rich in atmosphere. The characters are just superb, and one of the best moments in the games are when you're eavesdropping on a conversation.

I just wish that they had never made the comparatively bad Deadly Shadows...

I'm on my tablet, I'll comment more later.

For those of you who are thinking there won't be a Thief 4, here's a link to Eidos's official site:

http://www.eidos.com/games/

The game is being developed by Eidos Montreal, the same developers of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. It's been in the works since 2009, and is still being worked on.

There's even a screenshot from the game(taken on February 25th 2011).

I was actually thinking of posting a link to the leaked Thief 4 trailer, but you've already beat me to it.

Overall, I'm liking what they show in that 30-sec trailer. It's got lockpicks, mines and a bow(all are in previous Thief games.) The only thing I'm not liking is what(presumably Garrett) is wearing in the trailer. He looks more like a ninja, instead of a thief in my opinion.

I hope this is just an old trailer and they've already changed Garrett's outfit to something more thief-like. The most important thing I hope Eidos Montreal do is bring back Stephen Russell to voice Garrett again(as it wouldn't be the same without him in the role:()

These are literally my exact thoughts whilst watching that clip! XD Looks good, and now would be a perfect time to revive the franchise, what with the bow obsession everyone has.

It's just a coincidence I guess. The Hunger Games made it cool again originally, now all of a sudden just about every videogame seems to have a bow in it. :p

Rumour: Thief 4 'switched to next-gen consoles'

http://cdn.medialib.computerandvideogames.com/screens/screenshot_215009_thumb_wide300.jpg (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/viewer.php?mode=article&id=215009)

Long-in-development sequel could release next year, claims report

Eidos Montreal's Thief 4 (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/pc/games/10950/thief-iv/) has been switched to next-generation consoles.

That's according to the latest issue of OXM UK (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/362035/thief-4-switched-to-next-gen-consoles/www.oxm.co.uk/44560/issue-89-borderlands-2-star-wars-1313-gears-of-war-judgment-xbox-360-updates/), which reports in its gossip section that the long-in-development revamp will likely release late next year, when Xbox 720 (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/333332/xbox-720-every-rumour-about-the-next-xbox/) (codename 'Durango') is expected to launch. CVG sources indicate the report is accurate.

Theif 4 is said to have been in development for four years, with one designer even claiming (http://kotaku.com/5918203/thief-4-is-that-you) to have completed the game's final level.
The long-in-development sequel has recently seen its audio director and lead level designer both depart for other studios, along with several concept artists and other designers.

Eidos Montreal job listings reveal the Deus Ex: Human Revolution (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/pc/action/9549/deus-ex-human-revolution/) studio is working on a next-gen action adventure game (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=474379), with mentions of "player choice" and "stealth".

If the OXM report is to be believed it's Thief, not necessarily Deus Ex, that's being geared up for the next consoles.

When contacted Square Enix declined to comment.

I feared this was going to happen:( Although I think it's probably another Deus Ex game that's in the works for next-gen, so there's still a little hope for Thief 4 to come out this generation.
