Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition is just one step on the journey to a brand new Baldur’s Gate sequel.

Beamdog, which was founded by former BioWare staffer Trent Oster, has big ambitions for the classic IP.

“Baldur’s Gate 3 has been our long term goal,” Beamdog’s Cameron Tofer told Gamespy (http://au.pc.gamespy.com/pc/baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition/1220929p1.html).

“We have a lot of things to put in place before such a project can be launched. So currently there is no such project but that’s the one we want to do. Our thoughts have been that Enhanced Edition for BG 1 and 2 just make sense before there’s any Baldur’s Gate 3.”

Tofer said recent developments in crowd-funding could give the project a leg up.

“We’re totally thinking Kickstarter. It just makes so much sense and solves so many problems. I think what Brian [Fargo] is doing with Wasteland is very interesting,” he said, referring to the successfully funded sequel to a 1989 PC RPG (http://www.vg247.com/2012/03/15/wasteland-2-kickstarter-hits-1-million/).

In the meantime, Beamdog is beavering away on the Enhanced Edition of the original Baldur’s Gate (http://www.vg247.com/2012/03/15/atari-reveals-baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition-for-summer-2012/), due in northern summer.

As well as a CryEngine-powered visual overhaul, the new version will feature “side stories, stories to tie things together, unfinished stories” and unannounced new abilities.

“I think the new RPGs are great, but I don’t think they should be a replacement for classic strategic in-depth RPGs like Baldur’s Gate,” Tofer added.

“I think that’s what makes Enhanced [Edition] so relevant: Baldur’s Gate hasn’t been replaced.”

That one is Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition. This is just a news about possibility of BG3. :)

Guess I confused the two.

Carry on.

Hear here! At least now we're hearing something different than "Today's gamers wouldn't be able to handle games like this". I think that most would welcome the more complex game play that a game like BG brings to the table. As long as it is delivered with the expected fine graphics that is.

I would love for this to happen. But I'm not getting my hopes up.

I hope this is true. I still regularly play Baldur's Gate (and some Icewind Dale, too). I wouldn't mind a new game in the series (Dragon Age was an ok, but disappointing as a sequel to the series, imo)

I am playing the original game right now, and I'll follow it up with the sequel and then go through Icewind Dale 1&2. And then proceed to play NWN. I may or may not play NWN2 again, this is the one that really started the bad slide that led to the abysmal DA.

I wonder how BG3 would even work, story-wise. I mean the Baalspawn's (and his/her companions') journey is over, as shown in the Throne of Baal epilogue. They'd have to make up whole new characters and a different type of story, which just sounds like any other RPG, if you ask me.

^These kind of "problems" never bother me, probably because I never equate the game title to the story. I always associate the name to the game play and game system, and any story that the game possesses is kind of irrelevant to me. I assume however that if they do produce a BG3 that they'll come up with something concerning the city at the very least.

It's nice to see someone who thinks like me regarding this.
