View Full Version : Would you like another Tomb Raider for this generation?
Ok, simple question. Would you like a new Tomb Raider game for this or next console generation?
I think CD reached the top of possibilities with their Crystal Engine. It's time to move on, because the idea of hubs, even it's something new for Tomb Raider, isn't for games. Batman did this, and it was great, but it's also old.
Nobody here has a clear idea of what are they going to do with next game. Expanding this formula with a bigger map, day/night cycle, weather system, etc... or perhaps focusing again on puzzle solving with several locations. IMO they are going to take the same path than Batman, and they are going to expand the formula.
I wouldn't like to have a new Tomb Raider game for this console generation. Why? Because I don't want another Tomb Raider Legend. They need to dedicate their full team to make Lara from Lara what Nathan Drake was for PS3 back then. I don't want another outdated game, no matter how cool is it, if it's outdated, it isn't THAT great on a competitive market. Do I have to wait, 3 or 4 years? Count me on it.
I want to Tomb Raider blow my mind off again like it did on 1996, and staying on the sure was a bad thing for this saga, so Crystal, move on to the real thing and stop recycling that poor engine :ton:

Well if it took them four years to make this game, by the time they could make another game for this generation it will probably be outdated.
Although I don't see the next generation coming around so soon.

I guess it depends on how quickly the NG consoles come. :pi:
If it's not too far away, I definitely think CD should go fo it. :tmb:

We're most definitely getting another game for this generation. Even if they develop a game for the next gen, there will most likely be a current gen port. I really hope they start using a new engine, though. This one is starting to look seriously outdated. :/

Considering the fact that this game was designed for wider audience and that it involves less puzzle solving more shooting and creepiness, it'll be addictive, I think. It will possibly oversell a ton. This is "the game of our careers" Steward said somewhere, I have no doubt they'll build TR for next-gen consoles. They rebooted series for continuation. The graphical differences between CD's TR games are huge and it's exactly the same engine, slightly upgraded. If current machines are capable of handling games like TLoU, Uncharted or Watch Dogs, I can't really imaging how good will games look on future consoles. Probably Something like this. http://leviathyn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/tomb-raider-600x300.jpg?9d7bd4

But games can already look like that, the really good games anyway.
I guess a look like that would be standard for next gen.
I don't want us to go next-gen yet, let's stick to current gen, bsides, it took some time for Tomb Raider to appear in PS3, PS3 came out in 2006 and Lara went PS3 at 2008, so hopefully they won't rush the transition to next-gen this time around too.
By the way, @OP, there will be a day-night cycle in this game too.
Doesn't it depend on when the next gen is available? I like the hub-style, I didn't realise it was outdated :p. Graphics wise, then I guess it comes down to waiting if CD's current engine isn't good enough to compete. I dunno, I'd be happy with a current gen game if it's done quickly, but I don't see that happening.
This morning or yesterday I read an article about Nvidia saying that the power of current computers exceeds 1/24 of the current consoles.
It is time that XBOX and PS3 can offer something more.

Crystal Dynamics could use the new Luminus engine from Square Enix. It might not be too far fetched given that they participated in the making of the trailer that was presented at E3 showcasing the engine.
Yes. I want another TR title this generation.
Just think how we will all be mesmerized by how good the graphics are when next gen consoles launch, but then 3-4 years after its come out the graphics will be much more superior to how they looked when they launched.
I hate the fact not every one will be able to buy a PS4/XBOX720 when it launches. Cost ofcource. And i read an interview at ign and they said they had interviewed all major game companies and 90% of those companies said they will not create games for PS3/XBOX360 when the next gen launches :( No fair
It's not a matter of me wanting it or not because we have no idea when the next generation will come. But pretty much all the major developers said it won't be anytime soon.

Yea... thats really whats going to decide this... it sorta felt like squares tech demo, star wars 1313, and watchdogs were a case of developers wanting to show off next gen stuff, before the next gen is officially announced.... I would bet my left nut that next years e3 will be where sony and ms unveil thier new systems... in which case I think CD would be wise to go next gen....

Considering the next generation is supposedly starting next year, definitely not.
And considering CD helped with the next gen demo that was just unveiled by Square Enix, they could very well go next gen for the next game. But if when they release this game, the next one would come out in about two years minimum, which would already be in the dying days of this generation...sadly.
I can't believe this generation is dying.
WLF?

TBQH, I actually don't care. Crystal haven't impressed me much with the currently developing game so far, and probably won't unless they show something that will me make realize this game isn't a complete waste of time to play.
Also, as soon as they stop using the same engine that they've been using since Legacy of Kain days, that will be a good step for all of us, but they probably won't:mad:

Um, yes! I'm tired of TR being just another action adventure game. Yes get off that crystal crap engine. They need to seriously go head to head with these other games that actually look ten times better then this current TR. If they want some real inspiration they need to look back at what made TR so revolutionary which was graphics and gameplay.

I think it's safe to say that this generation is slowly but surely coming to the end of its chapter.

And I doubt the graphic is that big of a jump anyway. Current ones are still good.

Next gen for me please. Considering the Next gen seems like it is going to kick in round about the end of next year I'd like CD to spend some time getting to grips with next gen hardware, and develop some other games while we're at it. I don't want TR to fall into the same trap of yearly uninspired releases that it fell into last time if it is successful with this installment which I think it will be. As much care and attention needs to be put into the sequel as this one and you cannot do that in a year.
From the time they confirmed DLC, we will have somehow another Tomb Raider.
Maybe the DLC is large enough to compare with a classic unfished or gold.:)
Maybe they do more DLC depending on the success with the game.
I wouldn't mind periodic DLC for a year or so. But no full scale release again this gen.
Also, I agree with some posts. I wasnt crystal to dump this engine they have been overrelying on since Legend. I'm not liking the look of where the platforming is going in this game. It just seems to be more of the same from LAU!

Sigh I don't want to think about having to buy a next-gen console yet. It should be quite clear from the state of the economy not very many people can afford another $400 console. For all I know they might even cost more than PS3 and XBox360 did when they first released. Blehh.
I guess I'll just upgrade my computer instead when time comes... a lot less expensive.
With that said, Watch Dogs must've been a next-gen title. I thought for sure from the look of it it was going to be PC-only (even though I now know it'll be across platforms) because the graphics were far superior to what PS3 and 360 were currently putting out.
Which is only one example.
But anyway... depending on how this TR does in March, I wouldn't mind if they chose to go next-gen or not honestly... It'd suck if I wouldn't be able to play it but I wouldn't die. Wouldn't be the first time I had to miss out... since I only just got a 360 last year lol... I'm always so far behind. Luckily TR has never been exclusive to any one console... It being on PC is almost a given.
Regardless of whether you want to think about it or not the next gen is officially coming. Sony confirmed at this years's E3 that the 'PS4' is in development as are games for it. MS have also iindirectly confirmed much of the same. Not to mention the constant spec documents for the supposed successors that keep leaking. The game world cannot stand still because of a global crisis from 4 years ago. Yes times are hard, more so for some than others Greece and spain have virtually no economy and we in the UK have just gona back into recession, but people need to spend to boost the economy and times need to move on. Just because consoles come out doesn't mean you have to buy them straight away, anyway.
I'd like another 3 year development cycle for the next TR and the next gen will amost certainly be in full swing by that point.

Oh god yes! Just imagine.
Hey Lukass, long time no see you :)
And yes, I think this engine is very outdated. Sure CD is looking up ahead (They talked about 15+ years of the franchise) but sooner, the better. I wonder if they are working already on a new engine....but if they want to use the Luminous Engine from Square Enix, I am ok :D
/\ The sooner the better indeed. The engine needed to be put out to pasture yesterday, tbh.
1. I've heard the Luminous engine is for RPGs
2. CD's engine is perfectly fine as far as I can tell with multiple SE games running on it, ie. Tomb Raider and Dues Ex.
3. The engine can constantly be updated, it's only going to be a new engine if they decide to change the name of it.
^ They should rename their engine to Raiders' Engine.

Pretty much, I'm a console guy these days, used to be more of a PC gamer, and well PC gamers get new video cards or new PCs sometimes every 3 years or more to have the best graphics and performance. The 360, being from Nov. 2005, can't give us the detail and performance that high-end PC games have.
So pretty much, I'm happy to get a new console, after all with the next Xbox rumored to hit in late 2013, that'd make 360 a console that lasted 8 years, pretty impressive.
The next game better damn-well be open world if it's going next gen.
Not sure why Tomb Raider fans would want an open-world game for this series. I love GTA games, Red Dead Redemption, or RPGs, sure I can very much dig open world games. But that's pretty much the opposite of Tomb Raider.
I guess you'd wander around the world map, and enter Tombs (aka dungeons), and the game would be kind of like Zelda: Ocarina of Time? And perhaps we'd be able to choose out of say three tombs which order we play them in?
Or if it was a GTA style game, each tomb would be an icon on the radar, and she'd drive her motorcycle there to go tomb raid I guess. :D
Personally, while some choice is fun and I do dig that style, I don't think that format really suits Tomb Raider. I think it's cool to just play the locations in order, and just do it like that.

I agree, but if most developers are going to move on to next gen there's no reason Tomb Raider should stay behind. It would be a shame if this one was a hit and the second one is held back just because it isn't next gen.

Since this game hits in early 2013 and the next gen from Microsoft (and perhaps Sony soon after) is rumored for late 2013, I'd say it's pretty much a done deal that the next Tomb Raider game will indeed be next gen.
Developers are already working on games for the next consoles. Though the next Tomb Raider won't be able to be a launch title, it'd hit in 2014 at the earliest. Which is cool by me, I like to wait a little before getting a new console.

I'd say that depends on when the next-gen consoles will be released. If they aren't released till late 2014, then I would be fine with another game for this generation (assuming that the next game won't take more than two years to develop). If they get released earlier than that, they should develop the next game for the next generation.

What does gameplay have to do with an engine, next gen or not? The graphics and streaming in the media we have seen so far looked fine to me, so I do not see how the engine is outdated. They will just update the CDC engine to work with the new consoles when they eventually come out. What they do with gameplay is probably not dependent on any limits of the CDC engine and we have yet to even see most of the new game. I am a long way from saying it is anything like Batman, lots of games have hubs, they are nothing like any Batman game. I played Tomb Raider games with outdated ancient gameplay for years, certainly the graphics and engine for some classics were very outdated. Someone finally offers me something better I am not going to rush to say it is outdated already. Especially not before I even get a chance to play it.
And I am not waiting 4 or 5 years to play another Tomb Raider game, so yes I want another one for this generation while I wait for them to upgrade the engine for next gen consoles, which are never going to be any more powerful than a PC anyway.
If the next gen comes out in 2014 then yes.
If the next gen comes out in 2013 then no.
I don't think there will be enough time or resources to build a proper well-made sequel to this game in the time provided if the next consoles come out in 2013 or early 2014. Simple as that.

I'm well aware Sony announced PS4 (or whatever they're officially calling it... I can't remember right now). I would have dropped consoles altogether if it weren't for the fact PC is one, so neglected these days, two, a lot of games for PC are ports , and three there are too many exclusives to the consoles that I want to play so... eh...
Just because I don't want to have to go out of my way to save up for yet another new console doesn't mean next-gen wont show up anyway. We've already been in "next-gen" as far as PC is concerned. It's just rare that anything is really truly PC exclusive anymore, save games like MMORPGs I guess. Probably some others that I'm unaware of...
I was playing Tomb Raider on PC long before it was out on the Saturn or PSX, so I always stuck to PC for TR. So whatever... even if they decided to put in DRM like some publishers I wont really care much.
I think they should make another game for this generation. And by that, I mean that TR2 should be exclusively for this generation. Every year are gaming developers pushing the bar on what our current consoles can do. I still don't think that this generation is dated at all. It might be plagued with endless shooter action games, but the titles that actually have substance still tend to impress me.
If we are so excited for the next gen, then go get a computer with the best graphics card, as that's all gamers seem to want the new line of consoles for (which would be better graphics).
