View Full Version : 'Swallow' by Clara

I had this photo taken of myself to portray a strong emotion. I'm posting it here to get your feedback on how you feel about this.

This photograph is about my life pain. Pain that you have to swallow everyday and keep bottled up inside till it nearly corrupts you. When I went to school when I was younger people made fun of me because of my skin colour and said horrible things. I grew up withdrawn from others while feeling hallow and taking in everything they said to me and behind my back. This changed the way I viewed life as a child/teenager and it really opened up my mind. I thought people were so shallow that I could nearly read there mind. So this is to portray this life feeling and show that I like myself for who I am with the lack of clothes (there's nothing inappropriate shown). I hope you like it. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

Aww, Thorn http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/hug.gif You sound like such a strong person. It's tough when you're a child/teenager because sometimes (more often than sometimes) people do not realize they hurt other people's feelings and just keep on doing that...

BUT, anyway..back to the picture...WOW! was my first impression. I could imagine that spikey ball thing is the object that would cause pain when swallowed (ouch). Great symbolism. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif I really think you captured that certain emotion (pain) very well indeed. Thanks for sharing it with us! :D

Glad you liked it and thank you! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif Btw, it's called a morning star.
Time for me to get to bed, Bye. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

I think what you encountered as a child is something everyone will encounter sooner or later, one cannot survive without the pain that one inflicts.

Great symbol of pain you have there. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif

I like it, btw....how did you get that soft glow to the image?.....was it through a program or is it a camera trick?

I think everything is great except the colors (though, you may have some preference that you didn't explain in your initial post)

I really do "feel" this picture, only, if you had black hair, the "pain" would have felt a bit stronger...

and the purple, imho i think it would have been better as red http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

but, wait, dont listen to me http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/whistle.gif

I really enjoy your work http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

It doesn't really convey the emotion for me.

To provide someone with the emotion, a raw design you need it to be obvious from the first glance.
What I see in the image is a confusion of symbolism.

What it would need is for you to look like your going to eat it, rather than just appearing to whisper to it.

Your eyes don't show any pain, but more an anticipation and concentration.

The appearance as a whole is confusing too, being that you appear to be as white as a ghost, with white hair... yet what you want to show is having yourself drained away. No doubt the skin colour is your enimic condition but some base would colour you to a degree and it would only need to be blended downwards as you appear to fade from a more standard healthy young 'peach' to a pale white.

http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif Though I wouldn't take much of my art **** seriously really, given I've often been told that my opinion on artwork is just wrong by critics.. who used to claim the work I did in Uni was saying things that I never even thought about. 'perfect sub-concious simplicity' or something.

It looks like you have a loose grip on pain. How did you react to it as a teenager - with fragile resentment or resilient silence? I would imagine you reacted with internal vigor, since you don't seem like the submissive type. But your body isn't tense and the image doesn't convey conflict. :(

Heh, but I bet they wouldn't make fun of you now. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif :D

I love it, but like Raven_ says, it doesn't really look like you are actually going to swallow it and that takes away a lot from it.

thats a really beautiful piece of art http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif interesting concept and great colours and i love the soft feel that the glow gives to it. though i think the hair should be black just to add more contrast. but it really looks lovely the way it is now http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif
i like all of your stuff actually - your photographs have a certain special mood. love the one thats ur avatar http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

Well now, that certainly is an interesting picture.

To me it seems that if there was pain, that now you embrace it in a possessiveness that would indicate it's being a fuel source for your determination. Determination for what, that remains unclear.

It's a very interesting visual example of emotion, but not the one you intended I think.

I must say I love that picture http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif

If I did show "myself" in pain then it'd be expressing to the people who have hurt me that I am weak. This is a symbol of me taking their violence, taking it inside, and showing that I'm strong, even though It kills me mentally inside.

Btw that's my natural hair colour except the purple. It's just meant to portray me back in the past.

The contrast between my softness and the harshness of the morning star I think help convey that something horrible will happen afterwards.

Thorn, I think that's a very good image and I see your message well. Where did you get that morning star? It's the kind of thing I would like to have under my bed (burglar phobia).

If you haven't mentioned now I thought the purple in your hair were straps of a dress. I was thinking "why did she say lack of clothes".

< Is silly.

Lol they're just purple streaks. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif I got that morning star from my mother and she said she got it at a garage sale. I don't know where you'd get one elsewhere unless it's online.

Well I'm glad you like it. If everyone likes this then I might show more if anyone wants.
