Lost Valley level question

I'm near the end of this level. My question is, is it possible to complete the level if I just jumped over the gate rather than opening it, or must I open it with the gear mechanism in order for the level to end? Thanks!

This is what needs to be done. Use the three cogs and pull the lever. This makes the dam shut and stops the waterfall. Do not cross the bridge but rather drop off the side and grab on. Shimmy left and drop to a rock. Go up and turn to secret #4 and get a medi-kit. Jump in the water and swim until you reach the dam. Turn left and pull yourself up onto the ledge. Find the skeleton and get the shotgun. Jump back in the water and enter a tunnel. This is a very long tunnel but you will eventually surface to secret #5 with shotgun shells and a medi-kit. Go through the door and jump onto the dry river bed. Follow it to the waterfall or where the waterfall used to be and dive into the water below. There is now a tumel you ccan get to which used to be blocked by the waterfall. So your answer is yes, you need to go back and use the cogs.
