Helena is a goddess!!! She deserved the victory http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif

btw\ Helena was indeed born is Sweden. Her parents are Greek, but they just happened to move in Sweeden for a better future (tough years in Greece 20 yrs ago). I have never heard her saying that she feels like a tourist here. She loves Greece and that's why she left Sweeden behind and came to Greece (her mother country)for the rest of her life. The thing is not where you have born, but what you feel, so mean comments like that are not appropriate for a woman like her.

I think that elena paparizou is a greeksweden girl!
she is sweden because she was born there and according to swedish lows[justice of birthplace, most of the countries in europe and north america accept],she is a swedish citizen!
she is also greek because greece accept the justice of blood[even from granparents even one of them],so she is a greek citizen!
she can choose both so its up to her to decide or keeping them both!

BUT THIS IS NOT MY PROBLEM!
my problem is that the song is NOT a GREEK song!
is a english song, sang by a girl who representing greece!
next year if someone want to be in first place, should hire britney spears for sure success!
i am rocker,i like all kinds of music, but in that case, we are talking about nations, this victory is not a greek music's victory!

elen, im sure she was joking when she said that yesterday, she must have gave many interviews after her victory. i guess she is a little of both. the country she was born and raised in, and also the country all her family comes from. also the way her name is spelled. in sweden she is called Elena and i greece it seems to be Helena http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I had the same problem some years ago, but it's not that tragic. It may be better if they sing using their native language, but to tell you the truth, I understood nothing from the countries they did it on Saturday. It's not that I don't support this, but look it from another side.

If you cannot understand the words of the song (like you did when you were a kid and didn't know English), you judge it from the music. If the music is medium, you will bad-comment the song, even if the rhyme (that you cannot understand) is beautiful and has many things to say. I myself, liked some English songs, in a period of my life when I only knew to say "yes" and "no", and this because of the music. But I rejected a lot more because I didn't like the music.

Again, I'm not against native language.

Well we say almost the same thing, using a little different words! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/hug.gif
Its good to hear songs from other countries and love them without a clue what they say!
i remember my friend anubis asking a song of anna vissi, but he didnt understood the words!
i love A superb song in GEORGE MACIVER's level[wolf in sheep clothing i think],but i dont get a word, and believe me i still dont know what language was!he is a scotish, but the language was not english[ancient domestic language maybe or a foreign song he just pick it up?]
I love many of GREAT ROCK songs of the 70's and the reason i tried to learn some english was that!unfortunately i gave up for many years!
Also i enjoy french, italian, russian[katiousa],spanish even some ethnic music from africa and china, and i am not familiar with that languages! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/hug.gif

In a competition between nations, the first which is competing, i think is the compination of national music WITH the national language! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

Niko, I see your point, but "My number one" is a totally greek song: the rhythm and melody are genuine greek, the main part of the orchestration is based on greek instruments, and as far as the presentation was concerned, that part where Helena and the dancers danced together holding hands, the steps were inspired by cretan and pontian dances.

IMHO, the combination of all these greek elements with the english language was a very successful mix. I wouldn't mind of course if the song was presented in our language, but it was so perfect from all aspects that the english lyrics didn't bother me at all. Besides one of my favorite greek bands are Raining Pleasure, who also sing in english (and they rock! :D )

Sorry NICKY i know you loved that song, and ofcource we need as a country a victory in eurovision competition, but i still think its not so greek!
Why?as i said a greek song should be greek music with greek language!
The music had some[not many], elements of cretan lyra and pontos lyra, but the main theme is a modern pop style!the last years we use to hear many greek song of this style,so we are now very familiar to these sounds,so we call them greek songs!
You know when i was young i loved one special greek rock group SOCRATES,they played a real rock sound and they sang in english only, but if they ever represents greece in a eurovision contest i would not liked that!
BTW we have plenty of greek singers and song writers to send in eurovision with really good songs,we maybe never get the victory because of the language, but the most important to us is not a first place but to give to our friends in europe the "good news", that we still have ours good and unique domestic civilisation, arts and music that all the educated europeans respect and love very well!
Its to good to mix up our civilisation with other civilisations from all the world,i accept that and for decades i was accuse by my friends for XENOMANIA and XENOFILIA because i said that rock is the best music even from greek music, but we are talking now for THE represantation of GREECE!
P.S maybe all this is just the words of a middleage grouser! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/hug.gif

Maybe it's xenomania, but see it positively: the greeks always managed to adopt successfully to all situations :D What we can do now that Eurovision has come to Greece, is to represent our country next year with a beautiful greek song, sung in greek http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif This would be perfect!!! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Omg, I just saw that topic! I was so happy that we got Eurovision with Helena. I'm a huge fan of Elena Paparizou and the song was GREAT. I agree with Nicky. The song has greek sound. It had pop bits of course, but that was just to improve the song.

Even Pulp Fiction's Misirlu has that "pop" element in it, but it doesn't alter the old song. It makes it better! :D

But let's not have a debate over this stuff. Let's hope that we organise a great Eurovision next year. Who do you think shall represent us next year? Kalomira is just awesome! :D :D :D

Good point about Misirlou! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif I agree with you. The movie's cover version only showed how modern this song was/is! Plus many people who had never heard it before were interested in it, and looked for the original version as well.

Scott, LMAO!!! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/jumper.gif Yeah, that's what I said :D http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

OK, today's music history lesson ( http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif ) :

Socrates (aka Socrates Drank The Conium) was one of the most influential bands of Greece during the late 60ties and early 70ties.

This is how they are today:

http://nicky.tombraiderforums.com/images/socrates.jpg

This photo is from a concert they gave relatively recently. They are not still an active band, but they reunite from time to time to give special concerts for their fans. The guy on the left is the guitarist, Yannis Spathas, who is considered one of the best guitar players of Europe http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif He and the lead singer (the guy on the right, Antonis Tourkogiorgis) were also the founding members of the group. I'm not sure but I think that the drummer in the photo doesn't belong to the original line-up (he is much younger).

You can read about them in this site: LINKY (http://www.athensguide.com/socrates/)

Nicky, there are many other great old songs which can be very modern once they get remixed. We can keep traditional songs alive, without having to stick in old fashioned ways!

And I'm not joking about Kalomira. I think she is great. Well, that is a debating issue... There are some things about her that are really exceptional. Unfortunately, many of these characteristics are not shown by critics who only know how to show a biased and negative side...
