Bright, jewel-toned waters surround southern Florida, the Bahamas, and Cuba in this true-color Terra MODIS image from January 24, 2004. The colors are the product of intensely clear, shallow water sitting atop a number of submerged banks. The most prominent is the Great Bahama Bank, which is a platform of land that was submerged as the continental glaciers of the last ice age melted. The platform's depth ranges from 25 meters to just barely covered by the tropical waters.

Scattered throughout the different land forms are a number of fires; all are marked in bright red. Some of the fires show visible smoke plumes (click on the higher-resolution images). Also visible in the higher resolutions are two major cities: La Habana (Havana), the capital of Cuba, and Miami, one of Florida's largest cities. La Habana is located on the northernmost curve of Cuba, and looks like a smudge of gray against the darker green vegetation. Miami, which sits on Florida's southeastern coast, is a huge sprawl of gray that sharply contrasts with the brown-toned Everglades covering the rest of Florida's southern tip. http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/gallery/images/image02072004_md.jpg

Just make sure the mask is on tight, otherwise it's a mouth ful of salt walter when you jump in. I learned that the hard way in Key West... http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/privateeye.gif
