View Full Version : Midas Palace, pillars with flames - need help

Hello, everyone,

I'd like some help (perhaps a hint), because I play TR1 on my old computer and I'm stuck.

I don't manage to make Lara successfully jump over the pillars with flames on them in the Midas Palace.
The "walk through" says you have to keep the jump and forward buttons pressed and Lara will make a series of jumps over the pillars.
It doesn't work out because one of the pillars isn't in a line with the others and jump and run moves are necessary also.
The flames come back before I'm far enough.

I've wondered if my reflexes are too slow, but I asked a younger guy who has played tombraider to try it and he couldn't.

Please send me a message - without the gold bar I can't leave the place and go on.

It took me ages to actually do this part of the level. When you start the jump to the right press the right arrow while in mid-air. You will get there in the end. Just keep at it. Good luck. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Hi Adventurer, welcome to the forum!

Well, if you have enough medipacks, you can burn while you jumping over the pillars. Just keep pressinh key '9' on the keyboard (not numeric part of keyboard) for health (you will loose one big medipack each time you press '9' key) to go to other side of pool. When you take the thing you want, just jump into the water. It will neutralise the flames. If you want to do this way, you will loose approx. 5-6 medipacks.

Or, you must practice to be speed enough. ;)

Good luck!

well i just keep my lara burning till i get the stone and then well i let her refresh on the water...

obviously i only do that when i'm lazy, yep when i got my adrenalin at full i just do the right thing... actually, i only could do that jump when i finished all the games...

can anybody tell me whish are the hardest parts in all the tomb raiders...and the hardest or dificult parts of all the games..?

A :D ;) http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif   nnasia??

Thank you for your replies, folks!

I'll keep them in mind and try again.
This business about button 9 is unusual.
I have enough medipacks and will see how it works.

May there be no green goblins on your road ;) ,

Hi Adventurer...
Welcome to the forum...

Burn Lara?? No thanks... The only bad thing is that this thing is timed and you have about 10 seconds to complete it... Try doing what Raider Ranger said, pressing the direction keys to turn Lara in midair. Although you have a lot of medipacks you may need them later... Just quess that you'll say "What I did!!!! I need one medipack!!!" :D :D

In reply to Ernesto...I thought the underwater fans from the Lost City of Tinnos were the most difficult things to get past in the series.

Most difficult water stage for me was Lud's Gate in Tomb Raider III, especially the area with underwater rooms

I first tried the jumping and turning in mid-air thing, but that didn't work for me. So when I was on top of the last pillar and facing the last piece of lead, I took a step back and grabbed the ledge of the pillar. Then I moved myself as far as left I could and got up. Then I just ran and jumped. I did get burned a bit, but I didn't catch fire and I only had to use one small medipack :D

Hi Adventurer

Helix' hint is the best one. I sent a thorough explanation of this to Stella (Stella's TR tips) and she included it in her walkthrough (under the nickname Norman G).

Start on maximum health. Get to the third pillar using the arrow key in mid-air. As soon as Lara touches down on the third pillar, hit save IMMEDIATELY! This stops the timer. Get your fingers ready. When the game saves and the inventory disappears back into her backpack, hit jump-back immediately and grab the edge of the pillar. The flame will have come on by now but Lara's health won't go down until she pulls up again. Shimmy Lara to the LEFT so that she is at the outermost corner of the pillar. Get ready ... pull up and run and jump, grabbing the edge of the last platform where the bar is. Lara will have lost some health from proximity to the flame on the third pillar but she won't be on fire. Shimmy left again until Lara stops. Pull up and WALK, don't run, past the final flame. Lara will lose health again but she won't burn. Move away towards the lead bar. Relax, save and get health back up to maximum.

If you fail on the first attempt to exit from the third pillar, you now have a game save to try again for the last bit.

Don't attempt to get to the bar in 10 seconds. You'll get old trying.

Btw, I thought the most difficult part of TR1 was actually the metal gates in the Collosseum. The pillars in Midas Palace were impossible until I ignored the walkthrough explanations and worked it out for myself.

Best of luck

Ronny

Hi Ronny,
what bit of the colleseum do you mean when you say "metal gates"

Its been a while since I played TR1 so my memory is a bit rusty :D

TR1 is still the best of the series as far as I am concerned :D :D

Hi Adventurer, this usually works for me everytime no probs...

First of all line yourself up in the middle of room looking straight down the centre of the room. try to stand a little way back from the first flame.

Run straight at the flame and then press jump when you reach the centre of the block that the flame was coming from (a black circle on the ground)

keep jump and forward pressed down, the tricky part is guiding laras direction when in mid air. when you get to the block thats offset, try to land on the left hand side rather than the middle, then you can keep the forward motion going, which is the critical factor

you will land short at the far side, but if youre still pressing forward and jump, press action too in mid air and lara should hang, climb up and jumpover the last flame immediately.

Re: Metal gates

I think Ronny means the bit where there's a switch you stand on then you have to run into the first room, flip the switch, run to the next room and get into the little passageway before the gate shuts and you have to do it all again. Its easy if you know how, but it takes ages to get it right at first.

Yup, that's the one, Sarah (and a big hi to my Scottish homeland, Sarah). I solved that one by jumping foward and using lots of flips. There's just not enough time to do it simply by running.

I thought the most difficult section overall was actually St Francis Folly. I found the different levels very confusing. Again, the walkthrough was more confusing than actually working it out myself, although some of the secrets you'd never find without a walkthrough. This was the only part of the game where I actually got fed up because I spent so much time going the wrong way. The rooms were good though. Can you actually get past the Van de Graaf generator in the Thor room without getting hit? I've never managed it.

Trying to shake off Pierre and waste the two lions at the end was also tough. I tried it with the shotgun, but it does nothing to Pierre, and then had to resort to the trusty pistols. I also discovered the usefulness of saving mid-fight and using medi-packs half way through.

I love St. Francis Folly! The secret is one of the best ever, but it's a pain in the butt having to go all the way down to the bottom to waste the lions. I find the easiest way to get rid of Pierre is to just keep running around the pillar - he just disappears without you having to shoot him about a million times!

just use pistols on pierre, otherwise you're just wasting ammo - you cant kill him til later.

as for the metal gates, you can save a bit of time by hitting roll just before you get the square, so afterwards, laras standing on the square and facing the right direction to run back out.

Hello Ronny,

thank you for your reply!
I noticed your question about the "Van den Graaf generator" (that's what it's called?) in the Thor room wasn't answered.
When you enter the hall with the gadget you turn right immediately and walk to the wall, then towards the marked tile that gets hit with the electrical charge frequently.
Before you reach it, before you get into reach of the charge, stop and jump over the tile.
You reach the room with Thor's hammer without injury.
Good luck and good timing, Adventurer

I solved the problem in a manner that might work for others, who can't do a consecutive series of jumps like this either.

Each pillars is treated as a separate exercise.
You jump to the rim of the pillar (as long as you don't catch fire you're o.k.) , save your game, drop down and hold on to the rim, shimmy to the left, pull up, turn around on the corner, drop and shimmy along the side rim on the pillar.

The closeness to the flame will cost you a medpak for every pillar.

You reach the next one by jumping from the forward facing edge, or run and jump along the left rim.

Good luck or good patience in this case.

It's funny, but I've played this level so many times now I can usually get over this first time without losing any health at all, heh heh. It can be done. On the last pillar, pull up, turn, drop and hang, and shimmy past the last fire.

Easy peasy! Now let me see, how many hours did I spend trying to get past this first time...?

Hi I know this is an old thread but I was playing this just the other day so I can't resist...

It's not too difficult to jump accross all the pillars in one go without getting toasted it just takes a little practise and planning -

What you need to do is make a running jump off of the ledge onto the 1st pillar, another running jump onto the 2nd, 3rd, etc. The secret is positioning - stand behind the line marked out at the start, run and jump etc across all the pillars (you will need to move her direction possibly in midair as you go along) - she needs to make at least 2 steps on top of a pillar before she'll make a running jump onto the next - otherwise she'll fall off the end of one of them and you'll have to start again.

Start too far behind the line and the gap will be too wide to grab the edge of the final pillar, too near it and she won't have enough room to make a proper running jump and she'll fall off of the end of one.

It takes a little practise but you should get there in the end ;)

I noticed Cloudclimber had problems with this too.

Maybe the common denominator is that we're both not young anymore.
My reflexes in general are good, but maybe they can't adapt to the game as well as a young person's can.

I always have problems when direction changes have to be done in a hurry.

If I kept at it, I guess I could make it, but is it worth to do all these trials when fascinating new landscapes are waiting?
