Think about this - you are not allowed to hit the guy below the belt, but you are allowed to punch him in the head where his brain is! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/c-1.gif Somebody explain to me how this makes sense!

Boxer Dies From Injuries Sustained in Bout

Updated 11:29 PM ET September 22, 2005

Boxer Leavander Johnson died Thursday from injuries sustained five days earlier in a lightweight title fight with Jesus Chavez.

The 35-year-old died at University Medical Center, where he had been hospitalized since being injured in the fight Saturday night at the MGM Grand hotel-casino.

A hospital spokeswoman said Johnson was pronounced dead at 4:23 p.m.

Johnson was put in a medically induced coma after undergoing brain surgery less than an hour after his fight with Chavez. Doctors were initially unsure he would make it through the night, but the next day expressed cautious optimism after tests showed improvement in brain function.

Johnson was defending the IBF title he won in June against Chavez, but took a beating in the fight before finally being stopped by a flurry of punches in the 11th round.

He walked from the ring, but on the way to the dressing room began showing signs of an injury. He was rushed to UMC, where neurosurgeon William Smith operated on him to relieve pressure from a subdural hematoma, or bleeding on the brain.

His death follows the July 2 death of Mexican boxer Martin Sanchez, who died a day after he was knocked out by Rustam Nugaev of Russia in a super lightweight fight in Las Vegas. That death was the fifth in the ring since 1994 in the city.

Before Sanchez died, two other fighters suffered brain injuries but survived after fights this year in Las Vegas.

absolutely agreed, dumb is the only word that can possibly describe boxing. its also pretty boring imho, i'd much rather watch wrestling, which whilst being fake is about a bazillion times more intresting to watch.

its teriible to hear about that guy dying, and such a shame to know basically nothing will change, its not the first death in or from the ring as the report shows...

I also agree totally dumb. Boxing makes about as much sense to me as football. Especially Australian Football (AFL) their one aim seems to be to bash the living daylights out of the opposing team as well as scoring goals.

Yeah, and being punched in the stomach is very serious too...but maybe the below the belt thing is cos of your groin lol...being punched in the balls is very serious too...if hard enough...yeah, boxing is kind of pointless, so is wrestling (sorry Rass http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif ) I don't see wrestling as a sport if it's all fake...I'm not really a sporty person anyway.

I think boxing is a relic from our caveman past. I'm not a shrinking violet by nature but I cannot understand why anyone would want to watch boxing. I'm not totally against dangerous sports in principle though, since I enjoy motorports. As long as the particiants know the risks involved and make sure that crowd safety is paramount, then I think motor racing is okay. I realise that a proportion of the crowd want to see a crash, but it's easy to see the grace and power of the cars tearing through the circuit.

However for another examnple of a stupid sport consider televised darts. Darts is okay to pass half hour or so with a few friends, but watching televised darts?!

http://fool.exler.ru/sm/box.gif Never understood the appeal of boxing - for me it's pretty dumb. I can see the skill/training of competitive fighting generally (even though I don't always condone it), but boxing just seems so airy-fairy.

Oh, and what idiot came up with the name Australian Rules Football? There are no rules in that game apart from one: get-the-ball-from-the-other-team-and-we-don't-mind-if-you-need-to-kill-them-to-do-it!!!!

Completey agree about the darts, Jacob. About as interesting as watching paint dry.

Its a game based on our primitive insticts!
I dont think its based in logic!
BUT... i always like it when i was young :( ,and sometimes i still watch the olympic games![no! pro boxing is pathetic and sometimes i think everything are fixed IMO] !

Thats the bitter truth!i will agree to stop this "proffesional",games and leave, the more logic, olympic style box, where athletes are much more protected in a better way!

Well what do you guys prefer, that those men whom like fighting do it in the ring or just somewhere outside. This way those people who like to fight can do it with someone who likes it to, this way they can use there agression without hurting an innocent person. That's the way I see it. BTW those men in the ring know the risks.

You've got a point there, Ice. Still, it's a dumb way to waste one's life.

There are so many cool sports that push the human ability to the limit and teach us about ourselves and what we can reach. Diving, swimming, gymnastics. Those I like to watch.

Yes there are, but every person has a different taste. I myself am doing kickboxing and that's what i like. Im still in the beginnersgroup so im not puching people in the head and i don't know if someday i want to. But eventough there are other cool sports, maybe boxers don't like them. I like a lot of things, but somehow kickboxing appeals more to me. Im more a martial arts girl.

I can't say that this sport is dumb (although I know about this bad incident :( ), but it's definitely savage.

Those men(or women) in the ring know the risks and it's their choice to fight or not to. I personally like watching boxing. I also find boxing fun. Although I have never gone in the ring with another fighter I have done the excersizes they do and find it very calming. Especially if I am in a bad mood. I think it's much better to beat up someone who is in there voluntarily then some innocent bystander. (someone ^ said that but I don't remember who)

Greenkey I meant Australian Football league Not Australian Rules Football (BTW the Aussie Rules Grand Final is today. Sydney Swans v West Coast Eagles) Aussie Rules Football is no where near as violent as our Rugby League (Australia's version of Rugby Union). League football is full of what look like steroid abusing morons who try to belt the **** out of each other.

At least with Aussies Rules they look like normal human beings and no where near as much fighting. Not that I watch either. I might have a bit of a look at the Grand Final though as this is the first Grand Final for the Swans in over 70 years, and the first one since they moved from South Melbourne to Sydney.

Draco I'm with you the only real sport involves horse power, either 4 wheels or 4 legs. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

I LOVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEE WWE Wrestling! <3333 But its NOT SUPPOSE TO BE REAL for those who called it fake. Its called world wrestling ENTERTAINMENT for a reason. Its sports entertainment.

Boxing, is very dangerous, but c'mon you cant' tell anybody what they should do or what they shouldn't do. Its their choice.

They should make punches to the head illegal. I would much rather get punched in the groin. At least it won't kill me! But why do they let boxers aim for the head? That is how they get killed. Or at least make them wear protective head gear!

i just meant that if was going to watch two people beating lumps out of each other, i'd rather it was the extravegance and sheer over the top extremes that is WWE wrestling, rather that two people putting thier lives on the line in the name of something that can only be described as barbaric.

Also i thought boxers had to wear headgear these days, tho perhaps its just in the UK that law has been passed, tho i think they did in the olympics too.

In my honest opinion Boxing is still dumb and that makes the people who willingly get in a ring dumb too. I mean i dont understand maybe, but its one of those things where i can see a million cons but not one pro (except maybe the massive paycheck-worth it? hmmm what do you think!).

Well lets see more clear!

All these athletes love this martial art[not sport],they called boxing!its a manhood issue, that everyone likes because we have instincts,we all love to fight cwhen we were young, ancient greeks had included to the olympics, but today this is far to be safe!

Pro boxing is far to be called as entertainment, is more like "i want to see blood",live or from tv, and that is the reason i denie the pro box!

In olympic games safety is more important than the blood show!so i like it in that way!
Young men who join that "sport" know thats not safe, but they do it for glory and money, all of them are poor young people they try to escape from mysery!or some of them to proove theire manhood!

So if they improove safety during the game,no problem with me!

P.S btw wwf is obvious fake,so its more fun than probox for young men who want to see "manly" sports!I dont like it either but if i have kids,i whould prefere to see wwf than pro boxing!ofcource if they choose to be amateur[olympic athete] boxers i won't stop them!
