Cold Wind Whistles

Cold wind whistles
Outside my window
It asks permission
To come inside where
It is nice and warm

Every now and then
It stops whistling
As if to make me think
That is has given up
And left me alone

Only to return
With renewed force
A shrieking incessant
Demand to be allowed
Entry into my safe haven

The window opened briefly
It leaps into the room
In dismay and delight
Just as quickly chagrined
When the window slams shut

Cold wind whistles
Outside my window
I listen to its song
As I sip my hot coffee
And smile at my victory
