View Full Version : MODIS: Dust storm in Egypt and Libya

Sweeping across Libya and Egypt out of the northeastern Sahara Desert, this giant dust storm is an almost opaque veil of tan. Dust is so thick in the air that the vivid, verdant Nile River Valley and Delta are almost completely hidden, while Egypt's Mediterranean shoreline has become almost completely lost from view. Were political boundaries not added to the image, it would be almost impossible to tell where the Mediterranean ends and land begins.

The only completely clear portion of this image is in southeastern Egypt, where the Nile widens into Lake Nasser. This true-color Aqua MODIS image was acquired on January 22, 2004.
