View Full Version : My African Dwarf Frogs (so cute!)
As some of you may have noticed (I mentioned this in another thread), I have many aquatic pets http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Here are some pictures of my precious African Dwarf Frogs. It's very difficult to tell them apart 90% of the time, but there is one difference: one of them is bigger. So if you can figure that out (sometimes I can't either), the bigger one is named Chunky, and the little one is named Dinky.
Anyway, on to the pictures (click to enlarge):
And at the risk of receiving crude comments, these last two pictures:
Just to clarify the above: NO they are not mating, that's not possible, considering they are both male. And no, they're not gay http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
Those two pictures were taken shortly after I fed them, and they always seem to nip at each other or 'wrestle' in competition for the food (which always seems to land in that one area of the tank).
Either that or they're hugging... I dunno, I think it's cute, I just wish they wouldn't fight so much http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Wow, they're really cute! Do you have pics of your other animals?
Frogs must be a rather exotic pet. I sure don't know anyone with pet frogs!
Sorry, double post.

I do have pictures of my cat, but they don't seem to be on my computer at the moment... I'll do some digging and see if I have any high-quality pics of my fish (I have lots of fish though, at least 25-30 and they're all smaller than the tip of my pinky finger so I can't really get them all in one shot). I'll post a separate thread for my fish when I find some good pictures http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Just so you get an idea of how big these frogs are - they're about 2 inches long at their largest, but I'm going to guess mine are around 1 & 1/2 at most. I'm not sure though, as it's a bit tricky to put a ruler next to a squirmy, jumpy little frog (not to mention they're quite quick).
I'm not going to stop here, though. As soon as I have enough spare cash (I think I need about $100 or so? not sure), I'm going to get a White's Dumpy Tree Frog. Those are sooooo adorable! Of course, they carry salmonella so if I were to pick one up and pet it or just hold it, I'd have to make sure to wash my hands afterwards (but I'd do that even if they didn't have salmonella).
Here's a link to a picture of a dumpy tree frog: http://www.petoftheday.com/archive/2004/July/23.html
I can't wait to get one http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif When I do, which should be in the next few months, I promise I'll post some pictures. :D

sssoooooo cute , i want one
lol, that tree frog is great! Looks like he's ready to take on the world http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Just make sure never to watch "Hulk", exploding frogs don't look very nice http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/mischievous.gif
o.O "Hulk"? As in the movie about the green guy named the Hulk? I think I've seen it, but I don't remember anything about exploding frogs... oh wait maybe I do. I think I just blocked it from my mind, though. Either that or I wasn't paying attention, because the image doesn't register clearly in my mind.
As for you, focus, if you want one, by all means I think you should get one http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif If you have any questions as to how to care for them, I could help you with that.
Aww, so cute! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Lara Croft Snape Raider
Cute frogies! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif BTW, do you feed them with special food or simply with some insects?
Tomb Raider Master
Very cute frogs! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
actually, I do feed them a special food specifically for frogs. There's a variety of food available for these little guys, but I give them something called "Frog & Tadpole Bites" by a company called HBH. It's quoted as being "Soft, Sinking Food for Aquatic Frogs". Hehe.
I've had other frogs of the same species before these two.
The first one, Jim, died of starvation because I tried feeding him freeze-dried bloodworms and my 30 or so fish happen to love that stuff. So he'd get the leftovers, IF there were any. It annoyed me because the lady at the pet store recommended it. They're supposed to KNOW those things... sheesh! I guess it didn't help that my tank holds 30 gallons of water so for a frog that small, it was huge. He lived only a week :(
My second one, Legs, died of starvation as well, but not for the same reason. That was after I bought the specialized frog food... he died after two weeks because the tank was so big that he couldn't find his food. One positive improvement: the fish didn't take to this food as happily as they did to the other food.
Both of their deaths were quite traumatic :( I actually cried when I lost my first frog... I still miss those two. I can remember looking around for Jim, expecting to find him safe and happy... only to see him all splayed out, stiff as a board... I felt so guilty, even though it wasn't really my fault. I kept the receipts I got when I bought them, as a memento.
After losing two frogs, I realized it was time to get them their own tank. I only intended to buy one, but I bought two instead 'cause they're so cute. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif I have them in a 1.5 gallon tank, so it's a LOT smaller than the 30 gallon tank (obviously http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif ). They're safe and happy, and I think I've had them both for a good three weeks or so.
I think now I have a pretty good handle on how to care for these guys. I know how much food to give them, what works for their tank and what doesn't, and what they do when they need a water change, etc :D

Aww, what adorable froggies! I want some! I love frogs, they're such cool animals! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
I want an iguana... :(
But frogs like that would do too :D
Glad I got so many responses :D
But surely... there are more people interested in frogs on this forum? They're so tiny and innocent! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
And they sing! Mine started singing last night when I was feeding them. It's this ever-so-quiet, faint chirping noise (sounds somewhat like a bird or a cricket).
At first I thought it was the light making funny noises (my tank has a light :D ) or the aerator... but after turning both off I could still hear the noise now and then (and it wasn't coming from anything else!).
So very cute. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif I love them. <3
