View Full Version : cool math trick
1. Grab a calculator (You won't be able to do this one in your head)
2. Key in the first three digits of your phone number (NOT the area code)
3. Multiply by 80
4. Add 1
5. Multiply by 250
6. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number
7. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number again

Yep, that's my phone number! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/jumper.gif that's very clever Horus-Legend :D
I'm not a maths person BTW
Didn't quite work for me. It added a 0 in the middle.
I've come across this before...never quite figured out how it works...I'm working on it.
Any of you work it out , please let me know.
To Andromeda66, The maths can work it out because the last three digits are used in the sum somewhere, that's where it gets them from. If the adding of the last 4 digits wasn't in there it would be impossible.
I've got one of my own! The year it is today, subtract the year you were born, and you get your age! :D LOL!
I'm very sorry to tell you that I did it and it put a seven in the middle of mine. :(
Hehe. :D http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/jumper.gif
That's really cool. Awesome trick! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif
Lost Angel 21
Hey, my phone number! awesome! my friend told me how to do this a few years ago and I could never remember how to do that, so thank you for reminding me.
Cool, I got mine too, allthou I had to take the first digit off, coz we have 8-digits phone numbers
Tomb Raider Master
Coolio! :D http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif
Hehe, nice trick http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif  http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/jumper.gif Got it right :D
I posted the following a long time ago (it must have been over a year), but I'll post it again for the newer members.
I work at a shop that sells televisions. Joseph and Neteru came to me in order to buy one. They selected one that cost 50 Euros. So, Joseph gave 25 and Neteru 25.
When they left, my boss came and asked me:
BOSS: Elen, did you sell anything today?
ELEN: Of course. This TV for 50 Euros.
BOSS: What? No Elen! This TV costs 45 Euros.
ELEN: Oh!! I made a mistake. But don't worry. The guys who bought it are friends of mine and I can return the 5 Euros.
And this is what I did. I took the 5 Euros and went to find them. On my way, I thought "Why don't I keep 2 Euros and return just 3? They'll never know. Hehe!!!" And this is what I did: I put 2 Euros in my pocket. When I found them, I told them:
ELEN: Guys, I made a mistake. I have to return to you 3 Euros. Here Joseph, take 1,5. And you Neteru, take the other 1,5. Bye bye for now...."
25 - 1,5 = 23,5 (For Joseph)
25 - 1,5 = 23,5 (For Neteru)
23,5 (Joseph) + 23,5 (Neteru) = 47
47 + 2 (I kept) = 49
1 Euro is missing

ok just spent 10 minutes whith this one and i don't understand it help. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/c-1.gif http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/c-1.gif
deepbluesea, you mean you can't understand the way it's written, or you can't solve the puzzle? If it's the first, I could re-write it.
nope i ment i can't solve the puzzle. I understand the way it's written very clever. (Scratches head.) I just canne do it captain, i don't have the power. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/vlol.gif http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/vlol.gif
odd, I just heard that joke last week but it was worded differently lol
Yeah elen, I remember this riddle. This is all because its wrongly presented.
Actually when your boss gave you those 5 bucks, Neteru and J didnt pay 25, but it reduced to 22,5 each (45/2=22,5). When you gave them that 1.5 back, it grew to 24 (22,5 + 1,5= 24)
24 + 24= 48
plus 2 you took = 50

Elen's one is really cool (with the added character and all), it shows how one can easily make mathematical mistakes.
I would like to understand the phone formula.
Wait wait wait!
so one prob guys on HORUS-LEGEND math tric I had a double number.
Edit: number removed so that no one tries nothing.

I remember a math riddle similar to the one Elen presented. But this included 3 people and breaking up change of a dollar between the 3 of them.... http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/privateeye.gif Somewhere (I think) some money would appear to be missing. But actually that $1 is pretty much indivisible by 3. The $1.00 should (or only can be) split up in .33333333¢ (repeating) among the 3 people.
edit: I remember now. It was a missing penny. And actually it would've been .003333333 ¢ divided among the 3 people.
