that... is surprisingly silly. What a name. I can imagine one of their call centre representatives answering in a really perky voice "HI you've reached SALES CURVE INTERACTIVE!" and then the person on the other end of the line, expecting something else, laughing maniacally and hanging up. "id" in "id Software" = unconscious mind (latin, and Freud) ;)

Originally, both letters were capitals (ID Software), and came from "Ideas from the Deep". The "I" was made lowercase in the release of the second Commander Keen series, and eventually the "D" was also dropped down to lowercase which changed the meaning of the company name.
