Across eastern China, the increased use of coal and wood for heating in the winter often leads to widespread haze, such as that seen in this true-color Terra MODIS image from February 9, 2004. The topography contributes to the effect, as this region is very bowl-like and ringed by mountainous terrain to the west, which prevents the pollution from dispersing. The haze is such that many of the ground features are completely obscured.

Meanwhile, clouds of brown sediment swirl through the waters of Bo Hai Bay and the Yellow Sea, slowly fading to shades of blue and green as the sediment disperses in the water. And along the eastern shorelines, sea ice has accumulated into white edges. Snow dusts the mountains in that region as well, starting up in northeastern China and continuing down into North and South Korea.
