View Full Version : The most difficult puzzle in any TR game?

I would bet this has been brought up before - but I thought I would go ahead and ask....
What was the most difficult puzzle you had the most trouble with in any Tomb Raider game?
For me personally it would have to be in TR4 (The Last Revelation) those trap doors in that one stage (I can't think of the name of it right now.) But for me that took me the longest time to figure out. It took me over a month (the longest ever - for me) to discover that you could lift those panels on the ground. I felt so embarassed about that.

For me, Its in tr4, the labyrinth puzzle before you go into the pyramid! Took me weeks and weeks to find out how to do it!
I drew maps of the directions I had went, done everything I could think of! I was going mad! ... Then I find out you just turn left at every turning!!!
For me, the one that ****ed me off the most in TRC where you had to deck that cook with the crowbar. It was a bit obscure.

...a voice from the darkness.....
Hehe, good topic. For me, the hardest and longest was when I got stucked for about 3-4 weeks in TR3. In "Lud's Gate", I just couldn't take that damned "Embalming Fluid" into it's place! I didn't know the correct way to do it! :D And I wasn't sure about it, as the level was completable on another way also. It was my longest stuck, but I didn't want to complete the level on the other way, as it was very annoying that the "Embalming Fluid" still was at Lara. Finally, I realized the "how" of the "operation", and I did it...and the door opened - thanks, Bob. Then I thought myself a very clever and insistent person, as I never use a walkie, so I solved the problem by myself... :D
So, I can say that if You get stuck, never give up! Don't check any walkie, or You might miss part of the adventure! If You make it by Yourself, that's the real exploring...
SYS "Whew! That girl has got one bad attitude."
Definetly Lud's Gate in chronicles,.
For that matter all of London was a pain!

Dom, I think you mean Lud's Gate in TR3... http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
I'm embaressed to say it was the lead bars to gold thing. I would never have figured it out alone, never.

I would have to say in ireland where you either have to sumersult into the house below or where you have to find the sling shot
SYS..I had trouble with that embalming fluid too, but only on my second time through the game. I think I just took the short-cut first time round. The big part that had me stuck in Lud's Gate was finding that camoflauged lever in the huge water area near the end.

The hardest puzzel for me was also In Chronicles where you ahd to wack the cook with the crow bar. I even phoned up the Eidos technical support for help and then told me that there was a frying pan in the game. So i walked round to the cooker pressed X (as it was on the PSX version) and the crow bar in my inventory came up. I used it and realised what to do.
I can't recall the hardest puzzle atm, but I can say that the one in Tomb Of Seth (TR4) where you had to step only on some specific squares, made me to stuck for some days. And the reason was because I thought I had tried that and didn't work. But I guess I hadn't :D

I think that the puzzles in all TR games were standard but the ******* bits were the enemies.
eg. Tomb raider 2. Making that long swim under the ruins with sharks and eels and frogmen just to finally pulla switch at the end. I think it was wreck of the Maria Doria.
There's a couple of puzzles that have had me pulling my hair out....
TLR : when you swim into a closed room and you can only see the exit in the mirror. my girlfriend pointed that one out and hasnt let me forget it!
TLR : the bloke with the hammer that chases you about
TR1 : just being a bit careless in st. francis' folly
TRC : (no.1 on the infuriating league) the swimming section in the mine - you know the one - swim to diving bell - breather - swim to alcove - breather - swim up tunnel and out.
Ok,ok... Don't tell me that the puzzle in "Underneath the Sphinx" was easy!!!
btw\ personally, I never felt I saw a puzzle in TRC

I have to say tunlun levels in TRLR it took me ages before i worked out how to blow up the machine guns i spent about a month looking for the n oxide feeder i spent that long in trenches i found a bug so you dont have to get the roof key. After that i went back to tunlun and found the roof key! I ended up leaving the levels wondering what it was for. feel free to laugh :D

If I had to recount every puzzle in a TR game that I had to use a walkie for, I would have to bow my head in shame. Annacia, don't feel bad about the turning the lead bars into gold thing--I would never have figured it out either. Of course, I got the answer from the Prima walkie, and then felt extrememly bad that I didn't work it out for myself. Of course, with a game like Chronicles, so riddled with bugs, you could never be sure that it wasn't simply a bug keeping you from progressing. I was constantly wondering whether I hadn't figured the puzzle out, or some stupid game bug was just messing me up.
But I would have to say my ultimate failure in all TR games was the second shooting gallery in the VCI levels of Chronicles. I simply could not do it, no matter how many times I tried. What's worse, I had my game saved AFTER I entered the gallery, so I couldn't get out, so I had to jump back to an earlier save. And this is from a guy that loved Halo, a first person shooter.
Tomb Raider 2, (the first I played back when it came out). In the Opera house is the longest I have been stuck in all of the games. Cant remember exacally what I did back then, but it was something silly like pullling the Lift switch before it had power. Then wandering around doing other things, giving the lift power, then scratching my head wondering what to do next even though I noticed the lift had gone down, doh..
The can't really think of a difficult puzzle because I forget them all the time, not having played certain levels in a while, but I did have to ring the helpline in Natlas Mines cos I couldn't climb up those big orange blocks. In the end it was blindingly obvious.
Last night I also went back to play TR2 - 40 Fathoms, and I died at least 5 times before I realised there's an air pocked just after you go into the ship past the anchor. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/redface.gif http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/redface.gif

 I can't believe noone said they had trouble with the fire traps in TR1 and TR2 (the only ones I have played so far).In Palace Midas the 4 burners with a timed off switch-you have to jump fast to each burner before they light up again(had to get saved game for this) and the other timed burners in 40 Fathoms, where you had to run around shutting 2 different switches off to get 4 burners off at once-only managed 2 of them, but got by with medpaks and jumping into the water. Got past all the other tough challenges, tho. ;)
Just wondering http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
I did the same thing with the burners in TR2 :D :D

I do think that's really difficult, I just forgot about it. There's so many puzzles. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

*Sigh* Alas, I have a few
1) In TR3 (I think, it might be in the 3rd one) at the end of the game where there is this beast thing in a cage and Lara had a water sac thing and you have to fill it water and pour it into a weighing contraption. If it doesnt work the cage would open and the beast would come out. Lara would then have to shoot it, but OH NO! After the first beast dies, there's another one behind the cage door...
2) In Cronicles where young Lara is walking around that small church space with the pews are all scattered around the room. There are three huge square buttons at the far wall you have to push in a certain order. I could never get that! And those skeletons were scarry!
3) Also in TRC with Young Lara after she kills those two stupid mutant babies throwing rocks at her. After you swing over the pit you have to do this complicated set of jumpes and twists to get to a crack in the side of the wall...grrr! I could *not* get that for the longest time.
4) AGAIN...TRC with young Lara outside that haunted barn where the horseman is stuck in. The windmill next to it is so hard to get into. But I learned how to flip forward on my hands and knees after I got past that part!!
My moto: "If it doesnt kill me, it teached me new cool, nifty moves!"

So far I have only completed TRLR, and I have just started TR1, but I have to say that having to disable the gun turrets and shooting that soldier in the trenches level was by far the hardest yet. (I would still be there now if it wasn't for you guys) ;)
right now I'm playing TR 2 on a PS 2
& so far the harest place for me Is where I am now the opra house this place Is hudge with 5 differn't levles but we will se as I get Into the game futher

TR1: Lead bars or the weird clone thingy. I never would have figured those out if it wasn't for the walkie..
TR2: haven't played it except the first 2 levels, nothing much there
TR3: Only half-finished that, level skipped through half the levels http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/redface.gif ..perhaps the invisible platfroms?
TRLR: The first/2nd level - like Ellen I tried jumping from square to square, except it didnt seem to work. After days and days I tried it again and it worked! A bug perhaps??
TRC: When you have to throw the iron bars at the evil ally mcbeal babies

For me it had to be ropes-anything with ropes. In TLR, I forget which level, it took me forever to swing from one rope to another then onto a platform! If I had a dollar for every time I sent Lara screaming to the floor and ending up in a heap....
LOL, PattyC :D
In TRLR i also had problems with rope in BURIAL CHAMBERS level (I kept trying 2 days to jump from the rope to platform, but had no luck). Then I read ReadMe.txt file to see how i can swing the rope - after that it was really easy :D
Everyone has trouble with ropes first time :D
I spent about 2 hours first time in Catacombs trying to get across to that platform.
I think i invented 50 new names for Lara at that point http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/mischievous.gif

In Burial Chambers no... But In Catacombs yeah...

Yap, Catacombs, three ropes http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/yuck.gif :D
the last part in tr 1 is the hardest definately http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/bash.gif
definatley the cook and the crowbar! in TR5, by the time I realised what I was supposed to be doing I really could have beaten him to a pulp with it had I been given the chance

in other words all of the above
:(

The most annoying, not necessarily difficult, part in my opinion was the ropes in the last level of TRC, the ones which the people descending from the roof left. Each time I play the level I try and I try but take ages to actually get on the rope. Lara always just jumps straight past them.
Even thinking about it now makes me cringe...
Hi, I'm new here. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif Not really sure what I'm doing but.... I would definitely say the second shooting range in The Chronicles. Never did get it!! Don't know if you'd really call that a puzzle but I found it infuriating!!
