View Full Version : He's got a degree, but he's s.hit at TR
I've been letting my housemate friend play TR1 over the past couple of nights. He's just finished his Media/Management degree (probable 2.2), and needs things to do whilst he waits for his application decision for a post-grad to come back. So, I suggested TR.
Oh.....my.....god
I know this game takes practice, and I know that some people pick it up faster than others. However, let me tell you that I don't think I've ever had such a frustrating time as I had watching this guy play the Caves and Vilcabamba levels. Even by a child's standards he is AWFUL, and yet he's academically bright and has no trouble playing a competent game of Silent Hill 2. Here's some of the things he did during the first two levels on TR.
- During the Caves level, he lost his sense of direction and ended up back at the start
- He messed up the jump to cross the bear pit FOUR times, this being after I'd made him do everything in the training section before the start of the game
- Took between 45 mins and an hour to get through the opening level's timed door.
- He thought the level's first lever was a keyhole, (????) so he went back the way he'd come to look for a key.
He's a determined sort though, and tonight he wants to move onto the Lost Valley
HEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPP
:D LOL!!!
My poor Scot!! What can I say??? Patience!!

Heh, I remember Tomb Raider was the first proper 3D game that I played, I was well confused with how far ahead things were, if that makes any sense at all

LMAO Scotlee!
Very funny. Funnily enough my girlfriend (who's NOT a gamer in any sense of the word) has started TR, and the other day completed the first level within half an hour.
She's actually quite good for someone who rarely picks up a PS controller.
I've posted something like this before, but it's great watching her play, watching her figure it out and stuff. It's almost like playing it for the first time myself...
Heh, it's funny to think how horrible you were when you first started playing. When I first started I had no sense of direction and spent over an hour in the China level of TR2.
I think I can still remember the first time I ever played Tomb Raider 1. I think it was July 1999 (the day after my sister's b-day, that's how I remember ;) ) and I didn't know you could climb up the 'walls' in Caves. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif You know the area right by the first secret, well it took me a long time to figure out that there was an action key and I didn't have to try to jump up to get to the very top. ;)
Wow, brings back memories and the excitement of that first TR experience. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Good Evening Scottlee,
I just have to tell you honestly, that there is hope. I am a 30something stay-at-home mom and the first time I played TR was with my 18yr old brother (who was 14 at the time). I couldn't even make it past the practice level at Lara's House. I was even more horrible than your friend. Honest.. as sad as that is. Well... here I am, 4 yrs later and my 18yr old brother won't play TR with me any more because I smoke him!! Have some patience and faith. There is truely hope http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif It may take 4 years LOL.. but there is hope ;)

I had a hell of a time teaching my mother's friend to play on PSX - love her and all that - but by Dog I had to bite my tongue!! I'd tell her to run in a straight line, and due to lack of experience with a controller, she'd run a full circle!! She left me a bottle of Kahlua for putting up with her...
But her less than satisfying experience didn't stop her from buying her partner a PS2 and all the games....

Ahh Tomb Raider 1.... I remember those days like it was yesterday, Lara with her hair tied back (graphics dont you love them) and her lethal weapon boobies who at that time were pointyer than Madonnas! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/jumper.gif
