View Full Version : Installation crashes with NTVDM error

After a long time i wanted to replay TR1.

So i started installing this on my Win2000 system but failed with a "NTVDM cpu has encountered an illegal instruction" error.

I have tried the installation
1) by starting install.exe directly (=mouse click)
2) by starting install.exe in a DOS-box
3) by starting install.exe in a fullscreen DOS-box

Does anyone recognise this error?

p.s. i am impatient to try TR1 with Glidos and VDM sound...

Try the installation wizard from www.glidos.net (http://www.glidos.net)

Hi Rommie,

some more details (as i already searched these forums and tried several tips/instructions):

i used the installation instructions found at http://www.glidos.net/install.html?lang=en.

The installation failed at step 1) from the following steps:

1) Install Tombraider
2) Play Tombraider in grotty-graphics mode to check the installation
3) Download and install Glidos
4) Download the voodoo version of Tomb.exe and substitute it for the original
5) Run Glidos and play Tombraider with high-quality graphics
6) Buy Glidos to get rid of the spinning logo
Details step 1:
If you have Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Windows XP, then things are a little more complicated: you must install Tombraider using the command prompt; from the Start menu click
Start->Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt
Then, very important, you must put the command window into fullscreen mode (first see the warning on the home page about GeForce cards). To do so, right click the command window's taskbar icon and click "properties". Within the dialog box that appears, click the "Screen" tab, click "Full-screen" and then "Apply". You should now have a completely black screen with a command prompt at the bottom. Now you can perform the installation by typing:
E:
cd \
install
Next thing that happens is that the DOS-box remains black and after changing the application with Alt-tab i found the error message shown in the first post.

If you use the wizard you won't need to install it manually.
It does not take long to download ;)

That's typical problem for Windows 2000. I have Windows 2000 also and the same problem ;)

Anyway, if Glidos installer does not work for some reason, you could try the patch I created. The patch is working fine on several Windows 2000 systems.

This patch will place all needed files in C:\TOMBRAID folder, so you don't need to install anyway.

You can download the patch here (http://www.ratkovicdesign.net/downloads/patches/tombraid.exe)

Note: This patch is configured for Glidos (http://www.glidos.net) and VDMSound (http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound/), so you'll need both programs to run the game.

If you want to avoid Glidos, after extracting the patch files, you'll need to copy TOMB.EXE from the CD to C:\TOMBRAID folder. You'll need VDMSound anyway (DOS Sound support under Win2000/XP)

Thanks to both of you for yuor help.

I did not see the install wizard the first time i visited the Glidos site.
Installation with this wizard ran fine. I also installed TRUB (It's the temple of the cat that i want to replay: beautiful scenery) with the tombub.exe needed with Glidos.

I have also installed Glidos and VDMSound.

Next problem:

The original tomb.exe does not run. I ignored this.

When i start Glidos and choose Tomb Raider i got the warning "running in non-accelerated OpenGL: things can become slow" followed by a Glidos read-failure. After this Glidos and TR stopped/exited.

If i choose Unfinished Business, i get the message "CD not present" although it's present in drive D:

Using the patch from Bokkie also did not solve these problems.

Do you still have any suggestions? thanks

Bokkie

After installing the patch, you need to start the game within Glidos ;)

BTW, which 3D Graphic Card do you have? Do you have the latest drivers?

Loki

Hi Bokkie/all, hereby an update on my quest to get TR 1 running again...

i have the latest drivers for my Ati Rage mobile 8MB graphics card (i know, in desktops and newer laptops you can do much better than this thingy ... :D ).

I have found a solution for the "CD not present" error (see http://www.tombraiderforums.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=000301):
delete the entry "CDCheckFile:data\End2.phd" from the Glidos.ini file. Great http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I start TR/TRUB from the Glide Server application.
When i have the Entry "VESASupport = Yes" i get the warning "running in non-accelerated OpenGL: things can become slow" after which the new window closes and i get a pop-up with the message Glidos: "Read failure".

With "VESASupport = No" (or no entry for VESA) TR/TRUB starts in a fullscreen window that immediately crashes. No other messages

Other params: 800x600, forced texture smoothing tried both On/Off.

Loki

hehehe, something is happening, but "things can become slow" is an understatement.

(result after approx 10 minutes)

my system more or less freezes and i can not select other programs, not even from the task manager:
the text "DOS/4GW protected mode etc." in the window fades away and i get the NTVDM error again.

aaargh!

I just found this post (see http://www.tombraiderforums.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=11;t=000302#00 0002 (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=11;t=000302#000002) )
For Win XP, 2000 & NT users : First check what is the file system you are using. If it is FAT32 then your game have to work. But if it is NTFS the game will not work. ( I tried installing TR 1 and TRG in NTFS system. The game didn't work. Then I installed the game in FAT32 system. The game worked! I had the same Hardwares and configurations for both NTFS & FAT32 )I have a NTFS filesystem. So I gues i can stop trying...
Or maybe not. A message at VOGONS said that this should not matter. I have posted the same message overthere. Hope that someone can help.
I will post any answers on that forum in this thread aswell.

Thanks to you that helped!

Tomb Raider uses direct x dosn't it? Do you have the latest version?

Kaminari

Tomb Raider is a DOS game, it's not compatible with DirectX. The 3DFX version uses the old Glide 3D API. Glidos and OpenGlide remap the Glide calls to equivalent OpenGL functions.

Loki, it seems your ATI driver has no OpenGL support. That's why you get this error message. Did you check at ATI (http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html) the latest drivers for your graphic card? What is the exact name of your card? Rage Pro and Rage 128 definitely have hardware OpenGL support, but old 3D Rage don't. 8MB on the other hand may be not enough for Glidos.

FYI, NTFS has nothing to do with it.

Hi Kaminari,

according to the specs the graphics card has OpenGL support. OpenGL screensavers work, although sometimes are slow.
The driver is the latest. I have obtained it from the notebook manufacturer (HP).

i have added some info about the graphics card below. (note its a notebook so i cant change graphics cards easily)

Loki

Graphics Card:
ATI OEM Rage "Mobility" VGA Card 8MB AGP

ATI's RAGE MOBILITY family provides exceptional performance notebook graphics as measured by 2D/3D WinBench frame rates in 3D and DVD, and CPU utilization for DVD. 2D performance is 30 to 60 percent faster than competitive products, and 3D performance is three to ten times faster.
Specifications

GPU: "Mobility"Rage
MEM: 8MB SDRAM
MAX RES: up to 1600x1200@85 Hz 3D graphics up to 1280x1024. 32-bit true color 3D graphics up to 1280x1024.

32-bit true color (16.7 million colors). Full acceleration of DirectX, Direct3D and OpenGL application and games. Advanced 3D features including triangle setup engine, texture cache, bilinear/trilinear filtering and perspective correction.

P.S.
Ati does not provide drivers for Notebooks as "The display driver supplied with a given notebook has been customized for:
-the built-in flat panel display
-any other graphics or video options installed in that specific computer.
As a result of these customizations, ATI Customer Care is unable to offer drivers for notebooks."

I'm having problems with Tomb Raider under Windows 2000 as well i.e it just refuses to run at all, even if I follow the instructions on the Glidos site and use the Installer program.

Then I downloaded your patch and wonderful! It works!!!!!!!! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Or at least Tomb Raider does. Unfinished Business however, does not. :( (and, yes, I do have the UB CD.)

What happens is this: when I run Tomb Raider with Glidos, before the game starts a DOS command window with the following text in it appears:

---------------------------------------------
VDMSound DOS loader, version 2.01 (Aug 04 2001)
Copyright (C) 2000-2001 Vlad ROMASCANU.

VDMSound is covered by the GNU Public Licence (GPL), version 2 or later, as
published by the Free Software Foundation, Inc. (http://www.fsf.org/).

Loading 'VDDLoader.dll'...
Successfully loaded & initialised (hVDD = 0x01).

C:\TOMBRAID\>gldvesa.exe Tomb.exe
DOS/4GW Protected Mode Run-time Version 1.97
Copyright (c) Rational Systems, Inc 1990-1994
Glidos VESA support starting
DOS/4GW Protected Mode Run-time Version 1.97
Copyright (c) Rational Systems, Inc 1990-1994
_

----------------------------------------------
And, like I say, the game runs ok after that!

However when I try to run Unfinished Business with Glidos something different happens: first of all instead of a DOS command window I get DOS in full screen mode and the following text appears:

-----------------------------------------------
VDMSound DOS loader, version 2.01 (Aug 04 2001)
Copyright (C) 2000-2001 Vlad ROMASCANU.

VDMSound is covered by the GNU Public Licence (GPL), version 2 or later, as

C:\TOMBRAID\> Tombub.exe
DOS/4GW Protected Mode Run-time Version 1.97
Copyright (c) Rational Systems, Inc 1990-1994
_

-------------------------------------------------

And the program just hangs at that point, I can only get out of it by pressing ctrl+alt+delete and killing it with the Task Manager.

Now, it seems to me that the difference between the 2, apart from one running in a DOS window and the other fullscreen, is that Glidos VESA support is not running with Unfinished Business. Any ideas why not? :(

Ok I've got it working!!!! :D After reading one of the other posts in this thread I went to C:/Program files/Glidos and opened file "Glidos.ini" and added the line

VESAsupport: Yes

to the Unfinished Business config data, saved it, booted up Glidos, started Unfinised Business, and it worked!!!! Wooohoooo! Thanks to those who helped and especially Bokkie for his patch http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/jumper.gif

Moderators: theres a few problems with the board, I can't edit my posts after I've posted them (I get a "moderators only" etc message if I try) and the "Preview Post" option isn't working either!

I'm wondering, does it run in Javascript? Because I do have problems with scripted links not working sometimes. I'm running IE 6 service pack 1.

Theres no TR music playing during the ring menu and theres no ambient sound effects during the game.

Do you have ideas why not?

Ah, no worries, I've managed to get it working. It turns out theres some kind of clash with the CD ROM drives, I have to disable them all except for the one with the TR CD in otherwise the music fails to play for some reason.
