View Full Version : AOD Error and a question

Hey http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

Basically I wanted to ask what's the difference between running AOD from the Launcher.exe that's located in the root folder and running it from one of the executables that exist in the bin folder (in my case, it's the TRAOD_P4.exe).

The reason why this question came up was because every time I try to run the game from the TRAOD_P4.exe (which I guess is supposed to be the ideal executable for my PC), it opens up a pitch black screen for a few seconds and then crashes, giving me the following error message:

http://nikkie.tombraiderforums.com/forums/pictures/aoderror.jpg

I had this problem with the previous PC as well (though, not from the start; it was after I updated the drivers of my old video card at some point), and it goes on with the new PC, although the card and the hardware in general is different (well, the card is same brand as before, but newer model) - and up to now the only way to run the game was via the SCU.

However, today I found out that when I run it from the Launcher.exe, it runs perfectly and without problems at all.

Is there a logical explanation for this difference in behaviours, or it's simply computer metaphysics? :D

Hi Nicky. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif
The Launcher is the way to start the game, because it contains the settings to your CPU, graphic card, soundcard etc. The Launcher is then connected to one of the exes,
TRAOD.EXE ........ AMD and Intel P2
TRAOD_P3.EXE ... Intel P3
TRAOD_P4.EXE ... Intel P4
So when you directly want to launch one of these exes it will not work because your settings are not allowed to be skipped.
However, the SCU launches one of these exes directly. So i really don't know. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Hi Joseph http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

So does this mean that the drivers of the video card don't have anything to do with the error? And what exactly do you mean when you say:

your settings are not allowed to be skipped. Where is this configured? Does it have to do with the game in itself (that is, is it the game which decides to do a 'system check' every time it starts), or is it a matter of my system? Or it's just the way it is by default and it's simply one of those things that science can't explain? http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Oh, and do I ask too many questions? http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/redface.gif :D http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

that science can't explain? http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

What i think it is: your settings (that you choose in the settings menu), so your system's configuration, ok?... well, the Launcher.exe knows which settings to use on your system and where to find all the files to play the game and then starts the right exe (in your and my case the TRAOD_P4.EXE; so when you directly doubleclick on TRAOD_P4.EXE it will try to launch the game, but doesn't know where to find some needed files, it gets lost. :(

I hope Bokkie can tell us more, because he created the SCU so he must understand more about it. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

OK, I see, thankies http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/hug.gif Well you know I don't mind so much about that error, since there are two workarounds to get the game to run (the SCU and the Launcher). Besides I always get the most weird errors and crashes from programs/games, so this doesn't surprise me a bit  :D But it's a bit weird on its own, and of course if there would be a solution to it, it would be the best http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Yes poor TRAOD_P4.exe, it only tries to do its best and obey the Master, but it can't! :( :D

I don't see why you keep calling it a problem though, and think that it is because you 'always get weird errors and crashes from programs/games'... since on my pc the same thing happens when i doubleclick TRAOD_P4.exe. As far as i know, it is just normal. I always start TRAOD from the Launcher. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Nicky

I didn't realise that the same happens to you, Jo! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif Well like I said in my first post, at the beginning I could run AOD from the P4.exe and it wouldn't crash. So I could use both that executable and the Launcher (but I opened the game from the .exe, because I thought it was the best way). From a certain point and on, clicking on the P4.exe caused the game to crash, but then I never thought of using the Launcher again, so found the solution with the SCU.

I guess that I should forget about the P4.exe then. Since the Launcher is OK, I'll open the game from that file instead http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I don't see why you keep calling it a problem though, and think that it is because you 'always get weird errors and crashes from programs/games Oh because I really do get them  :D For example, I never managed to make the TRLR demo run on any PC I ever had (not even on my first PC which was Win98) :(

Ah that old problem.

The game is designed to run from the root folder TRAOD. So when you try to start from the traod\bin\ the relative paths to the other sub folders is wrong and the program cannot locate the other files.

You can start TRAOD from either the dos prompt or a shortcut.

Dos Prompt:-
type C:
TYPE CD\PROGRAM FILES\EIDOS INTERACTIVE\TRAOD (or wherever it was installed)
type BIN\TROAD_P4.EXE
This way you are starting the program from the root installation folder.

Shortcut:-
When creating a shortcut set the
"Target" to CD\PROGRAM FILES\EIDOS INTERACTIVE\TRAOD\TRAOD_P4.EXE
and
"Start in:" to CD\PROGRAM FILES\EIDOS INTERACTIVE\TRAOD

Hi Flak-Sim http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

Jeez, I didn't know that was a common issue  :D

Thanks for those two workarounds http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif

BTW, I guess it's OK if I simply create a shortcut of the Launcher on the desktop (as in, right-click on the Launcer exe and select Send to --> Desktop --> Create shortcut) so as to start the game from there?

Simulation
24-10-05, 19:02
Yep. That would do. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif

Creating a new Shortcut on the DeskTop

Right mouse click on the TRAOD icon and select Create Shortcut from the context menu.
Right mouse click on the new icon and select Properties.
Change Target to : c:\Program Files\Eidos Interactive\TRAOD\bin\troad.exe -godmode
Change Start in to : c:\Program Files\Eidos Interactive\TRAOD
Press OK

I still get the same effect: the game won't launch and i get the same error as Nicky.
I do not have the game installed on the default location.
So in the 'Target' i typed:
F:\Spelen\TRAOD\bin\TRAOD_P4.exe
In the 'Start in':
F:Spelen\TRAOD

The game tries to launch, then comes the error message.

Nicky

Just tried this workaround, Jo - it works for me! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Joseph
24-10-05, 19:44
Via the shortcut method Nicky? And do you have the game installed on the default location?

Nicky
24-10-05, 19:53
Yup, the method that you describe above http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

No, I don't have it installed in the default location; it's on the second partition of my HDD. So the two paths, after I changed them, are like this now:

Target--> D:\Games\Eidos Interactive\TRAOD\bin\TRAOD_P4.exe

Start in--> D:\Games\Eidos Interactive\TRAOD

Hey!: how come you have D:\Games\Eidos Interactive\TRAOD\bin\TRAOD_P4.exe?! Because when i installed the game into my "Spelen" (=Games) -folder, the words Eidos Interactive were automatically erased and don't exist in the root directory's name either! Could that be a problem?

By the way, see, Nicky: you didn't type in what Simulation says in his post (meaning "CD"): Originally posted by Simulation:

LOL, you too have a folder called 'Games' http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/jumper.gif http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Well, when I was installing the game and selected to change the installation location, the default path was erased as well; but I created the path & folder myself at that point http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

you didn't type in what Simulation says in his post (meaning "CD"):No - I followed the lines in your post:

So in the 'Target' i typed:
F:\Spelen\TRAOD\bin\TRAOD_P4.exe
In the 'Start in':
F:Spelen\TRAODhttp://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Joseph
24-10-05, 20:33
I created on my "Spelen" section a Eidos Interactive directory and copied the game's rootfolder into it to get the same path as suggested, but still: the game tries to launch but i get the same error! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/c-1.gif But i never have any problem running the game from the Launcher.exe. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/c-1.gif
Maybe i have to reinstall the game to get it right. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/privateeye.gif

Joseph
24-10-05, 20:37
Wait! I can't launch the game at all anymore. The normal Launcher shortcut now even gives the same error! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/clown.gif This is crazy.
I'll reinstall as well.

Nicky
24-10-05, 20:39
Yes, I had a similar problem the first time: I installed the game in the default location, and then I cut/pasted the whole folder in the other drive. But it didn't quite work. So I re-installed it, choosing/creating the path/folder I wanted during the fresh installation http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Joseph
24-10-05, 20:44
Hmmm... yes, i'll do that. Thanks Nicky. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/hug.gif

Aha!!! No, it runs! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/jumper.gif For some weird reason, the "Data" folder was moved into the "Savegame" folder  Very weird. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/clown.gif So i place it back where it belongs. Did the same on the Eidos Interactive copy. Both are working now. :D
