View Full Version : playing tr1 in xp - alternative

30-11-04, 03:06
Hi guys http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif
I just picked up a copy of the original Tr1 playsation version - although i don't have a playstation console.
I installed a playstation emulator from HERE (http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/psx/)
Although TR1 runs ok on my system this is even better.
The sounds are clearer and sharper (with all the extra audio that the psx version has), the music is beautiful and the fmv's are higher resolution. Plus it runs the cpu much cooler than with glidos.
Only downside - you can only save when you find those damned crystals. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
If you get the chance to pick up a cheap copy give it a try. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif

Hi jjohn http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif Nice find. I tried to find an emulator a few years ago for my PS games and failed. Now I've got all the TR's for PC too now, so. Still, might give it a try for other games I have for PS.

jjohn i'l give you a hint if you want to save whenever you want even without using crystals use save states http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Thanks Net -I didn't think of looking there http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/c-1.gif . Net to the rescue again. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif

Thanks jjohn for this hugely valuable tip! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif I didn't know about this. I am sure may people will be interested to learn more.

I WILL look for PS versions of TR. When i find it, i will try ePSXe. Could you explain: Originally posted by The Emulator Zone:
ePSXe is considered to be best Playstation emulator. It plays most commercial games so it wont let you down.
Tip: Make sure to also download and configure the plugins & playstation bios otherwise ePSXe will not work! Now what is "playstation bios"? and where is it on this page (http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/psx/epsxe.html) ?
Can i play PS games with my keyboard, or do i have to use a joystick (i have a Logitec Wingman Attack, and a gamepad)

01-12-04, 10:15
Hi Joseph
The ePSXe is the best emulator.
All the pluggins for the emulators ( cdrom - video - sound etc ) are on the site mentioned.
However the bios is a sort of psx chipset and so because of copyright Most websites will not post links to them.- They are quite hard to find - but if you send me a PM i can e mail them to you.(small file < 1mb).
Worh doing as TR1 runs very well with it. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif

The emu is very flexible - you can use a joystick - joypad or keyboard or combinations http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif

Check your pm's jjohn. ;)

01-12-04, 10:46
Aha. I see. I typed in Google "playstation bios", and got 100+ results. I took the first one: web page (http://emu-russia.km.ru/data/psx/psx_bios_en.htm)

Now, tell me: is this one ok? Will it work? Are all bios's equal? Or do i have to search more? What do i have to be aware of?

01-12-04, 11:03
I just realised that it might not be suitable to post the bios here as it is copyrighted.
Legally they can be obtained only by dumping your actual playstation console chipset onto your pc.
Alternatively google is your friend. ;)

01-12-04, 12:42
Ah... i see. I have read some sites and found answers.
Q1: What is a PlayStation BIOS image?
A1: A PlayStation BIOS is the software code programmed into a chip on the PlayStation which controls various functions on the console. An image is just a dump of that code which can be used on a PC.

Q2: Is using/downloading a PlayStation BIOS legal?
A2: Technical it IS illegal to download and use a PlayStation BIOS. It is Sony's copyrighted material after all. Some say if you own a real PlayStation, then you have a right to use the BIOS image, so you decide.

Also this page (http://www.lawtechjournal.com/notes/2002/12_020819_leung.php) is relevant.

From a cursory glance over the help file I've just managed to get Soul Reaver running. But it's very slow and no audio in FMV. I guess when I've figured out how to take care of that, it should be fine. Still, the graphics look good.

01-12-04, 14:53
OK, I've also got Shadowman running and figured out the no audio in FMV and slow speed. I had to reduce the resolution. A shame though, because it then looks ugly. This is very resourse intensive. Even running it a 800 x 600 16bit colour / native PSX X/Y resolution I found it stalling on a couple of FMV's.

I'm using the 'Pete's OpenGL2 PSX GPU 2.0.6' plugin. Maybe I need to change it  or maybe it's the emulator itself that's resource hungry. I'll be interested to see your findings Joseph.

01-12-04, 15:47
Yes, but, Net... :( i don't HAVE the ps version of TR1. :(
I don't have any PS game here in my house. But
i'll buy a playstation game one of these days (will be the 1st one for myself)...
You see, i once gave someone a playstation with 2 games on her birthday, that's all.

:D So it is partly MY PS2, by the way. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif :D

01-12-04, 20:53
Net, i was in a shop this evening and saw Shadowman, i recognized it because you mentioned it in your post. It costs 9.95 euros. Is it a good game? Should i buy it for testing purpose?
But what i am really interested in, is TR1 playstation version. Or other (older than AOD) TR's. So i asked the shop-guy. Answer: "Since a long time not available anymore." :(
So i have to look on ebay or other marketplaces on internet.

Hi guys
Yes the choice of pluggin is important - i had to play around to get smooth sound and video.
For my set up i found these the best:
Pete's open gl 1.75 - video
Eternal SPU pluggin 1.41 - sound
default cd rom pluggin.

Also you might need to play around with the configurations of the pluggins - specifically you need to limit the fps on the video pluggin to between 60 - 75 fps.
(OTHERWISE the sound is very fast).
I picked up my copy of tr1 from a bargain bucket at $5 but have seen on ebay for about the same.
I have also tried silent hill and resident evil(directors cut) all work well - and again resident evil plays better on playstation emu than on normal pc game.
Good luck http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif

Evening jjohn. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

Nice to see you around again. And you buddy.

Seeing Lara in her original format is quite nostalgic.

I Just played through the first few levels on both pc tr1 with glidos and tr1 psx with motherboard monitor in background - Psx plays 10 deg C cooler than glidos - one more reason to try psx :D

02-12-04, 05:58
Ah Joseph, I didn't realise you had no PS games. Well if you were to buy Shadowman, you can't go wrong. It's a fantastic game, complex, extensive. Somewhat gorey at times. The music is brilliant too (just wait till you get to the Gad Temples).

jjohn, thanks for your listed plugins. I'll try the 'Pete's open gl 1.75 - video' I picked the other because of my graphics card. I already have the 'Eternal SPU pluggin 1.41 - sound' and I'll try the default cd rom pluggin.

Thanks Neteru i'll buy it today! :D So it will not only be for testing but also for pleasure. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif But ... so many games i like, and not enough time to play them all. :( ...

02-12-04, 18:15
BTW Net: i just sent you a pm. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

02-12-04, 18:54

Hi Neteru. Look what i bought today:

The cd is completely black on the data side. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

When i turn it, it looks like a real cd.
Have no time to play it, but at least it's added to my games - collection. :D

07-12-04, 10:23
Nice, new and shiney http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif Mine's all cracked and knackered :D I bought it second hand. Yes, all PS game CD's are black underneath. You can also buy recordable CD's that have the same black underside.

09-12-04, 07:35
Looks good Joseph - hope you managed to get it working ok.
I'm having trouble recognising the names of the psx controller buttons - as i don't have a proper psx controller it is a bit hard.
From the pic please could someone point out what L1 L2 R1 and R2 are .(and any other button names that aren't obvious)
Thx for the help.

09-12-04, 12:25
jjohn, http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif Did you see my post to you about savestates?

As for the picture:

J1_B5 = L2
J1_B6 = L1
J1_B1 = R2
J1_B2 = R1

For TR:
Triangle (J1_B10) = Draw Weapons
Circle (J1_B9) = Roll
Square (J1_B8) = Jump
X (J1_B7) = Action

In case you don't realise (I don't know if you do or not), click in the box that has the J number to highlight and then press the button you wish to use for that operation on your keyboard, mouse or joypad.

The upper right hand drop down box I have set to Digital/Analogue (F5) and in game pressing F5 allows you to use the direction sticks.

Thanks Net - Very helpful - i couldn't figure out any of the cheat combinations without that.
Got the savestates too - although the crystals are a bit of a novelty http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif

One last question on the subject http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/c-2.gif
I notice that the playstation contollers are advertised as being USB connection.
Does anyone know if a playsation controller works as a gamepad plugged into a pc USB port?
Thx again. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif

11-12-04, 13:46
Playstation controllers aren't USB jjohn. But you can buy an adapter (I understand) so that you can use a PS controller on a PC.
