I just ran "ad aware" on our PC and noticed that there were "28 running processes". http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/yikes.gif

I checked the "misconfig - start up option" and there are only 8 items checked on.

Does it mean that we got a further 20 programs running in the background? And if so, where can I see what they are and maybe uncheck them?

Most of them are Services. 28 isn't too bad to have running. I have 25 running myself (SP2). You can view which Services are running on your system by going to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services but I strongly recommend that you touch nothing if you don't know what you are doing. Many of these services are essential for your PC to run, and you just might find that your PC will no longer run if you alter something you shouldn't have done. You can learn more about Services by visiting Blackviper (http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm)

If you run AdAware Gabi, you only have to watch the bad items that it found and delete them. When it says there are 28 processes running it is just being informative.

Thanks Net and Joseph. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

I was not going to "touch" anything, Net, I was just curious to know what there was running in the background and if it was something useful or something that had managed to "worm" its way into our system.

Joseph, I did know that I only have to deal with the "bad items" (as you so nicely call them) that AdAware finds. I just had never realized that there were so many running processes.

Another thing learned!

BTW, I would NEVER change, undo, delete or download anything without checking first that it is safe to do so. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/bash.gif (please see my second topic from today)

Thanks again guys http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/hug.gif
