I see that there is no (Tomb Raider 3) patch - which makes tomb3.exe file to read files from Hard Drive. So I have one. Do you need one? I mean you could put it in Download area so everyone would be able to download it. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

I have heard that there are similar patches for TR4 and TRC. You know anything about them or the other games?

I don't think we have patches for playing the TR games from the HDD.

I don't think we have patches for playing the TR games from the HDD.I have *exe files for TR, TR2, TR3 and TR4 to run from HDD. And one correction, there is a need only for one extra file (for tomb3.exe) to run from HDD ----> VFAW.AFP (just tested)

What could be the purpose of playing TR without cd? Normally, we all own the cd. The patch you talk about, isn't that the "no cd patch" used for unofficial versions of the game?

*What could be the purpose of playing TR without cd?

By Apofiss - You don't need to insert CD every time you want to play TR3 (of course you can use Virtual Drive too) and there is slowdowns when CD-ROM starts to play some sound file for game.

*The patch you talk about, isn't that the "no cd patch" used for unofficial versions of the game?

By Apofiss - Is that makes any difference?

ELEN
27-12-04, 23:02
The "no cd patch" is the one that solves the error message you get "insert TR3 CD". Playing from HDD is something else. You create a mirror of the CD on your HDD and you play from the HDD. But you have to modify the .exe and make it read the data from the HDD instead of the CD. The game of course runs quicker and there are no dealys on sound.

...a voice from the darkness.....

Hmm, that sounds really interesting from another aspect too... I myself have all of my TR-CDs' image-files on my HDD, and I can play them from a virtual drive, via Daemon Tools. So, no slowdowns due to the CD-reads... ;)

But, what's that "another aspect" then? Well, the old TReditor (made by Turbo Pascal) custom levels... You can overwrite the old files with the new ones, so You can try any of them easily..if You're operating on the HDD...

So I'm also interested in Apofiss' patch. I'll download it once it will be online, and I think, OBig also will host it or give a link to it (we have tons of TReditor-levels online)... http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif That would be even greater if we had patches like this for the other episodes too... http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

firstly i have to thank Apofiss for bringing this to you guys attn

this is on behalf of all of us who either own COKeM versions or Sold Out versions of the game, who find that, any time we might want use an alternative Tomb3.exe that has been patched (but not cracked) we are trying to combine an updated, yet still copy protected exe, with a CD that will fail those tests and thus not let you play
in my case (using the Sold Out CD, which appears to have no missing files like the COKeM version) i am getting game lag caused by audio being accessed from the CD and i cannot resolve this using any dedicated patches (or even find out whether the game is already officially patched for AMD support etc.) because the copy protection for the original CD version remains in all patched versions, whether official or not

on the Sold Out CD the four protected 'spoof' files contain only 1 byte of info and there is a config* file to go with them
if you look at cracker sites you'll find this 1 byte filesize, plus cracking the exe with a hex editor to recognise these instead of the original 600MB+ spoofed versions is the hackers' solution...
...so...
Sold Out essentially sold us a cracked CD, including a cracked exe
that's the sort of useless thing you might buy from a market bootleg seller! rather than a pure image that is not yet cracked - infinitely more useful to have, even if you can't use it just now

i personally, only have a problem with being forced to run a game from a CD, causing the game to have frequent pauses and not being able to choose how i may try to resolve this

we require the correct No-CD patch for this, and probably also the original VFAW.AFP (please tell me Windows won't actually think it's ~600+MB!!!) as ours is different and part of an elaborate crack

[actually, Apofiss, i'll mail you my protection files to check if your No-CD works with them aswell as your originals - then we'll know for sure if the VFAW.AFP from the original release is specifically needed]

btw CONFIG.AFP contains:-

MARKER 340106 883 \VFAW.AFP
MARKER 340043 524 \NEIR.AFP
MARKER 340101 574 \OKET.AFP
MARKER 340028 320 \AWCS.AFP

...if opened as an ASCII file

it might be that this part of the protection remains the same, but the additional Sold Out files on the CD throw out the entire checksum for the disc somehow!?

regardless, there is a problem here that needs a single solution for many ppl including myself

thx all,
d3v

I once mentioned in another topic that there is an official patch 1.1 for TR3 which enables to copy audio data on hard disk and the game will use audio from hard drive. But you still need game CD in your CD drive. Before I had stuttering sound and after applying that patch everything was fine.

No-CD patch sounds fine but is it legal?

Joseph
28-12-04, 09:51
When serving the purpose as described here, it is an indispensable, smart tool, and not against the law. Only in the case where it serves the purpose of playing pirated copies of games you are acting against the law.
As described in this thread, some people prefer playing their games from a copy of the cd on their harddisk drive, with a good reason as they explained. These people have paid for their legal copies of the games and don't contribute to piracy in any way. I can see no legal offence here.

What are you talking about guys? Do you think that all the other patches around the internet (that are a modification of the original exe files) have officially been released by EIDOS or CORE? Most of the official patches are ****. I think they must be pleased because we promote their games, because with the un-patched versions half of the players wouldn't have even started the games.

ELEN. Did you have all the same files copied as here?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/Rihards/tomb3exe.jpg

You need to do like this:

1)Install TR3 as always you do (normaly)
2)Copy all new files to TR3 directory
*At the first time copy just TOMB3.exe and VFAW.AFP file
3)Copy audio, CUTS, DATA, pix folders to TR3 directory too
4)RUN the game (if it's not working then copy all dll files too)
5)If there is any errors - let me know what kind of errors ;)

All in all it should work fine!

However it doesn't work... For the first try, I got an error message about no disk in the drive. For the second try, it started with no problem: logo, FMVs, title-screen with music..everything seemed to be fine. But when I tried to exit, the program terminated with an error-message about the usual illegal operation... For the third time, the same has happened. Then I tried the compatibility mode, I set it to Win98..then the program asked for the CD, and it didn't start. Then I set it back, and it started again, but it didn't show the second FMV and I had to terminate it manually, because it showed just an empty title-screen with no icons and no sound...

Maybe we have different versions. I tried it with the original UK-version (many files in the "Data"-folder may be different!), this time...

Joseph, "MANUAL" identifies Apofiss' version for me..it's not an original release, it's a re-release..like Sold Out, Trilogy, and such like (those versions doesn't contain paper-manuals in the box, but they contain a PDF-file on the CD)... The other two files are configuration-files: "config.txt" contains Your Setup-settings and in-game settings (view it, if You want, if You already have TR3 installed into another folder), and "data.bin" is created and used by the game... These three files aren't necessary..the program creates the configuration-files if they don't exist...

Apofiss, I have TR3-EVM too, what is the Hungarian version of Sold Out, so I can test it with that too..I think, it should work. But I'm going to wait for Your newer tests and experiences first... http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Joseph, there are differences between the European and US-version, I noticed that earlier. Many savegames what I made with my US-version years ago, don't work with the UK-version. "Thames Wharf" is a good example: the UK version always pop Lara up onto the rooftops, when there's a rooftop above Her head..so it's totally unplayable (it happens when I install the UK and put the US into the drive ;) ). Other older US-savegames just simply takes me back to the start of the level with the UK-version... :D It's actually a problem with our BugSection too: many savegames was done by the US, and more savegames was done by the UK-version, so many people may have problems with trying the TR3-saves...

Hmm-hmm... Since I have many versions of TRs (in ORIGINAL!), I can make a test with all of my different versions: UK-Original, UK-Premier (TR3 disk is the same for me), US-Original, US-Trilogy, EVM (Hungarian Sold Out)... http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif It definitely needs time though... :D

Okay I finished testing...

Yes there is a need for a few more file to make it work 100%. I included all these files in new *.zip file (TR3 upd v2). I will send this new zip to SYS, Joseph and ELEN.

*Just follow my instructions to do it right:

Firstly.

Install fresh TR3 (files must be as shown)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/Rihards/tr301.jpg

Secondly.

Copy all new (from zip file) files to TR3 folder as shown

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/Rihards/tr302.jpg

And atlast.

Copy pix, audio, cuts and DATA folders to TR3 folder as shown

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/Rihards/tr303.jpg

Then run game.

Few tests

*If you run game @ 32bit colour (800x600) then there is possiable a small problem with sound - to correct it - JUST restart game! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/privateeye.gif

All tested 100%! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/c-3.gif

Apofiss, the impossible exists too, obviously. I just did it all over (first uninstalled, and deleted the remains of course), installed exactly following your instructions. But alas: nope, it still keeps asking for the cd. I also noticed that in your step 2, you have 1 file more than i do: the data.bin file. Where did you get that from, and how large is it?

ELEN
06-01-05, 01:18
data.bin (http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/~eleni/various/data.zip) file (just 1KB). But I don't think it will change anyhting.

I'll mention this, just in case. When I was playing the game from the CD, I had to install a patch because it was asking for the CD. Then I installed Apofiss patch. Does this count?

Joseph

Thanks ELEN, but sorry: the data.bin file added makes no change: still asking for cd.

ELEN
06-01-05, 13:52
I knew it wouldn't change anything. Anyway, do you have the patch that olves the error of asking the CD? Do you think that if you first install this one and then Apofiss' patch this thing will work?

btw\ I just noticed that when I run the game, I can't see the EIDOS movie and the starting FMV. Although this doesn't bother me much, since I know them :D

Joseph
06-01-05, 14:04
Hi ELEN. FMV's not playing is obviously because the FMV's are in the "fmv" folder, which is on the cd, and according to Apofiss' instruction this folder is not mentioned amongst the ones that need to be copied, which i found funny btw.
And what do you mean: 'no cd' patch? I think that is included in Apo's package?

ELEN
06-01-05, 14:22
Joseph, among the other patches, there are also two:

1) A patch that solves the CD issues. Many players (including me) have encountered a problem. When we insert the CD and select to play, the system cannot somehow see the CD in the drive and gives the error "Please insert CD" whilst the CD is in the drive. You install the patch and no more errors.

2) A patch that changes (in the .EXE) the path of reading the files from the CD. Instead, the .EXE tries to find the files from the HDD. This is Apofiss's patch.

Now, in my case, I had already installed the first patch, because I had problems. Then, I replaced with Apofiss' patch in order to play from the HDD. My thoughts were if my move of installing the "No CD" patch firt, made the trick. Something like AOD, where you have to install both V42 and V49 for better results. I may say stupid things and since you replace, the old .EXE is gone, but I haven't tried replacing the original .EXE (that gave me the error). I replaced the "No CD" patch (first in the list above).

ELEN

Haha for the blonde moment. :D
About the patch 1) you mention: i have in my collection a TR3 nocd patch. As .zip file, it is 444kB size. Is that the one you use?
We had a thread some 8 months ago where a member had your problem on Windows2000. He solved his problem with that patch, and sent me the file. I never used it myself. In such cases i delete from the Registry certain lines which may not be correct, before re-install. When i had a prooblem with TR installations, i solved it that way.
I dunno in your case.

Hi Guys,

I have just installed the No CD fix first time without any problems.

1) I started with a fairly clean install of TR3.

2) I then copied to CD data onto the installation folder on the harddrive. When prompted to overwrite an existing file I always said NO.

3) I then copied the files from the No CD zip file into the installation folder. When prompted to overwrite an existing file I always said YES.

Joseph. I see there only one problem why it's not working for you - it's your WindowsXP - its configuration must be different (for hardware or software) than mine, Simulation's or ELEN's - well at least I guess so. Maybe it's cos of Windows Updates? I don't have any update for WindowsXP, thought... or maybe CD/DVD-ROMs drivers are somehow strange http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/privateeye.gif

Probably, Apofiss... i just retried all fresh: no luck. Even to do Setup it asks for cd, even while cd is in tray.

Is that is Netherlands version? (even if so, but game should run, cos (how far I know) only audio files are changed in other language versions... http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/privateeye.gif It looks like that some other files aren't concordant from this version. Have you tried english version?

New update files are available for Tomb Raider 2 NoCD. If somebody want to try it - just put down your e-mail.

(all installation are similar to Tomb Raider 3 - as shown previously)

Apofiss, I have the same version as Joseph, but the Engilsh-version. And I have more or less the same experiences too. If I want to Setup, the game always asks for the CD. I don't give up though: I'll try it with my EVM-version (Hungarian release of Sold Out, but fully English anyway) and I'll inform You about the results. If You have any more updates for TR3 and/or for the other episodes, feel free to send me them too. Thanks! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Of course no! TR2NoCD works only for TR2. I sent it to you......you could test it, thought.

I thought if TR2NoCD won't work (for TR2) for you then there is some problem with your WindowsXP or CD/DVD drive's drivers or something else...

Well, I tried the TR3 update with my EVM-version, but it still doesn't work... :( The original UK-version was better, because that started at least...

The TR2 update works well. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif However it didn't surprised me at all, since it's the EXE from the ripped version: the date and the "tr2.reg" file show it to me clearly... The only problem with this is the CD-audio: You can't hear the Ambients, many musics, and You even can't see the "cut-scenes" without the CD. It doesn't matter if the "cut-scenes" are on the HDD: the game won't play them without the audios from the CD...

Hmm... http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/privateeye.gif Later I'll see what I can do to fix it. (for TR2) ATM I can't do any tests cos my current video-card (GeForce2) has some problems with changing resalutions. (eh...ATI Radeon 8500 - is occupied atm too)...next week I'm atlast getting GF6800GT...
