View Full Version : warning input signal out of range

I am having trouble opening my TR II and up games. When I start them it looks like they are starting normal, but just as the intro movie starts I get a black screen with a small blue box that says "Warning. Input signal out of range” with out the quotes.
If I hit Esc twice I can get the TR game to start. While I have this black screen I have the sound from the game. Can someone tell me what this Input signal out of range means? What signal is my PC referring to? Is the signal too weak or is it too strong? The odd thing is I can insert the first Tomb Raider game and play it with no problems. Can someone help? I have done a Google search for Input signal out of range and found nothing. I run WIN98SE, 1.1Proc. 256 ram, ATI Radeon 9200 128 video board. It's really a puzzle.

This sounds like your are either trying to run the games at a resolution/refresh rate too great for your monitor, or your monitor is getting ready to pack up. Have you altered the resolution of your games or the monitor (or it's refresh rate recently)?

Try to reduce these in one or both and see how it goes.

Yes i spontaneously agree with Neteru.
Your misconception is What signal is my PC referring to? ...it is not your pc, but really your monitor trying to be heard. "Input out of range": Input TO the monitor, FROM the pc.

I have tried all the resolution settings I could set my settings at an it did not change anything. I have a s cable outlet on the video card for a hook up to my TV which will also has a s cable outlet. Could I subsittute my monitor with my TV to see if I get the same results? The only time I have the problem is when I want to play the TR games. I have no trouble watching a DVD on my PC or any streaming video that I come across on the net.

Aha. You use a TV-card?
Can we see your dxdiag? Because that may explain.?
Click Start /Run...
type in
dxdiag
and click OK.

You could try the following: disconnect the TV when playing a game.
and / or:
Set the display resolution to 16 bit and 75 Hz. (right-click on empty space on Desktop, Choose Properties / Settings. Set Colourquality to "Average (16 bit)".)

That's usually a refresh rate or resolution problem. Usually it occurs when trying to use a refresh rate or resolution higher than what your monitor supports.

How big is your monitor? Like in inches?

I have a 19 inch four year old ADi monitor. I have made some changes. I exchanged the Ati video card for a new one and now when I tey to play a TR game, the intallation and intro start out OK but when the game starts I get a black screen. the odd thing is I can surf the web, play a movie on my PC, play some games etc. could it be possible that when the original video card went it did some damage to the AGP socket or the motherboard? If so how can I trouble shoot to check them. Alsohere are some new spec's on DxDiag.

What resolution are you trying to run the game in? Also what is your current refresh rate? To find out (this is for windows XP, but it could carry over into Win98) right click on the desktop, choose the settings tab, then click on the advanced button, choose the monitor tab. It should tell you what your refresh rate is atm.

Now you changed videocard, can you change monitor also? I mean, can you lend someone else's monitor for a moment, just to see?

Originally posted by Catzeyez: I have tried all the resolution settings I could set my settings at an it did not change anything. I have a s cable outlet on the video card for a hook up to my TV which will also has a s cable outlet. Could I subsittute my monitor with my TV to see if I get the same results? A TV requires other output settings tha a monitor. First you used a ATI card, now you have a nVidia card. Both companies deliver a configurationmenu with their drivers. Did you change the settings there?
Also: what settings do you have in the TR games settings? Click Start / All Programs / Core Design / Tomb Raider 2 (do the same for 3 ) / Setup. In the menu, just click OK. It will choose the default (low) settings. Try to run the game(s).

I have WIN98SE and I have tried to play TR III and others with every setting available on the game and on my PC. The only TR game that I can play is the original TR, the very first one they made. I have played all the TR games on this PC hundreds of times until the original video card went bad. When I go to TR III>setup menu>it is always set at the lowest setting 640x480 16bit. I don’t have the availability to use another monitor. Is there a way I can post a screen shot of the TRIII set up. I have tried to use IrfanView and Word but could not post a screen shot of the menu. All that I did to install the drivers when this new card was installed was to click on “Install Drivers” and it was done automatically. I can play other games, watch movies, do almost anything I want to do except play the TR games or games like them the way I use to. I have done a reformat on my PC and have reinstalled only what is need to try to play the games. I have even used another HD and get the same results. Also with the new video card I don't get the "Input signal out of range" message anymore. The screen just goes black.

Hello Catzeyez. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif
When I go to TR III>setup menu>it is always set at the lowest setting 640x480 16bit. Yes that is normal. Even after you already have chosen and played the game using higher settings, it always shows the lowest settings by default, when you open the menu. But they will only be implemented after you clicked OK. Don't click OK if you want to keep your current settings.
Is there a way I can post a screen shot of the TRIII set up. I have tried to use IrfanView and Word but could not post a screen shot of the menu. Maybe you'll find your answer here: http://simulation.tombraiderforums.com/techhelp/images.htm I can play other games, Which games exactly CAN you play? All that I did to install the drivers when this new card was installed was to click on “Install Drivers” and it was done automatically. Yes but often you need to update your drivers also. In the case of tour NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500, i doubt the latest Windows 95/98/Me - Version: 66.94 - Release Date: December 16, 2004 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_66.94)
will bring anything new.
But your Creative Live! soundcard could also be the cause of your problem. Visit this page on the Creative website:
http://www.creative.com/support/ , and click the line: "Software AutoUpdate
Automatically detect updates for your product." What it does, speaks for itself.
Let us know the result.

Joseph. I found a fix for the problem. The new video card had drivers that were not suited for the games I wanted to play. I had the most up to date drivers which are 66.94 win9x_english. What I did was install 56.67 win9x_english and all the problems went away. Had to take a step backwards to go forward!!!

Aha!!! This is more often the case. A very annoying thing! Or better: Stupid, isn't it? I had that too with some ATI driverversions for WinME. 3 full update-versions didn't work, so i stuck to the older i still had. Later, a next update version did finally work.

Oh, i'm so glad you solved it! Many congrats, Catzeyez! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif :D

We always advise to use the latest drivers. But you can't always trust on that.
Best is to always read the "fixed in this driver" release notes, before updating drivers anyway. That's why i said you would not have much advantage of the 66.94 :

</font> Added support for GeForce 6600, GeForce 6600 GT, and GeForce 6200</font> Added support for using HDTV over DVI connectors</font> Added support for advanced DVI timing on all GeForce 6 series GPUs</font> Added support to recognize and display monitor name in all control panels</font> Added support for TV/HDTV setup in the nView Display Setup Wizard</font> Updated Gridlines for easier grid setup and management</font> Microsoft® DirectX® 9.0c and OpenGL® 1.5 support</font>
Thanks for letting know. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/hug.gif

No need to thank me, my thanks is to you guys for all of your help and patience.

Also can you explain what the "Added support" items are for that you posted in your last posting?

Also I went to this site to get the older drivers http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_archive.html.

I have booked marked it so that I could pass it on to others.

One more question, how can I add my own picture under my name to the left of my postings.

That's interesting about Win9x. When I have a minute I'll add this to the trIII tech FAQ.

Your link to the nVidia Win98/ME drivers archive does not seem to work however it is spelt correct.
But that's because you just pasted the url as text. Next time use the "LINK" button under the 'Reply to this post' menu. ;)
