View Full Version : More TR3 Problems

Hi people! I hope someone can point me in the right direction because I am hurting here...

I finally got TR3 to install and run on my Win2k machine, after scouring the net and d/l several different patches for Win2k probs and no cd fixes, etc. I even went out and got a graphics card to see if that would solve some of the probs (n Vidia GEForce MX 4000).

So at the same time I bought a PS2-like game pad to play with and TR3 refuses to acknowledge any input from this device. The diag says it is working fine and it is even listed on the TR3 setup menu as the input device. All I can do is use the keyboard, but that isn't very helpful because...

Most of the panels of the gameplay area are invisible, and most of Lara is invisible as well. When I run or look around, many panels disappear and/or stay in the same place and duplicate themselves all over the screen as I move.

Everything seems to work fine, including sound and FMV, except for these 2 issues.

Any ideas anyone? I am really a novice at this but any suggestions will be very helpful! Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, Zaphod.
This thread may help you: http://www.tombraiderforums.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=11;t=001240
I hope the messing up of the graphics is caused by your problems with the device, and are solved after you solved that problem.

n Vidia GEForce MX 4000 I guess you mean: Geforce 4 MX 400 ?

Joseph: Thank you for the welcome and reply. I am too new to be a valuable contributor, but I hope that will change soon.

Reading through the link gave me an idea. I went to the gamepad profiler and assigned key values to the buttons, and that seems to be working. I thought the game was supposed to automatically do that but it did not. However, my graphics are still terrible, in fact this problem completely prohibits playing the game as I cannot really see anything. Do you have any idea how that might be fixed?

The graphics card box says this card is "GEForce MX 4000 PCI 64MB DDR" by PNY Technologies.

Does this help?

Thanks again!

Hi Zaphod,

I would recommend installing the latest nVidia Driver and then re-install DirectX 9.0c since you have changed graphics cards.

nVidia Support (http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp)
DirectX (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9226a611-62fe-4f61-aba1-914185249413&displaylang=en)

GEForce MX 4000 PCI 64MB DDR Not: FX4000? And is it PCI-Express?

Simulation: Thanks to you also for the help, I am working on that but am having trouble with the nVidia site. Hope to sort that out in a bit.

Joseph: I have no idea what "express" might be... that doesn't appear anywhere on my box. This link seems to be the product I purchased yesterday:

http://www.pny.com/products/verto/value/mx4000pci.asp

Does this give you any ideas on what is wrong with my playing field? I am currently trying to follow Simulation's advice with nVidia and DirectX. I think the game is supposed to work with DirectX 6. Could that be it? I am wondering if I should install that if 9 doesn't work.

Certainly seems to be a good product, Zaphod! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif

I just want to be sure if it is a pci-express card.
Click Start / Run..., type in
dxdiag
Click OK.
Choose to save all information.
Open the file with Notepad.
Copy and paste the complete text into your next reply.

the game is supposed to work with DirectX 6. Could that be it? I am wondering if I should install that if 9 doesn't work. DirectX is constantly in evolution. Your game requires at minimum Directx6 to be installed on your pc, as it says.
Latest version (Directx9c) includes all code of Directx6, so you should be safe when you have installed the latest.

Ok, let me tell you what I did: I got my DX updated now to 9.0c. But the graphics are still crazy. So I looked in the tomb raider III folder and there was another directx folder, so I checked it out with the diag tool in there. It said several files are missing, so I tried to update it using the setup tool, also in the folder. That did not work, but it updated the files in my previous 9.0b folder, which is in Program Files, not the Tomb Raider folder.

So I moved the DirectX that came with the game to the Recycle bin and tried to play again. Still can't play becuase Lara is invisible and most of the panels are gone or black. So the game is using a DirectX that is not in the Core Design folder, because that is in the recylce bin. But the only other version I have on the drive seems to be completely updated, so I have no idea.

I hope this makes since, and that it may give someone an idea of how to fix this. Thanks very much for all your suggestions and help.

Zaphod,
1) DirectX should NOT be located in the Core Design / Tomb Raider 3 folder. In WindowsXP, it belongs in Windows / System32. In Win2000, it should be similar. It doesn't belong in Recycle Bin either, and 2 versions of DirectX on your system is 1 too much. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/privateeye.gif

2) Your Celeron cpu is a weak processor for 3D applications like video, and games. :(

3) You have little Ram memory on your pc. You better double it, at least. Still, you should be able to play TR3. ;)

4) If you have messed up DirectX: the problem is that DirectX is very crucial to the functioning of your Windows, graphics and sound. Once messed up, it should be reinstalled. But reading about your situation, i believe a complete reinstall of Windows is the better way to fix things. :( But first try the following:

5) I see you haven't installed Windows2000 Service Pack 4. Download it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp4/default.asp and install it. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif

6) But the final and most important point: it seems that this version of nVidia drivers you use, has a problem with Tomb Raider games. I advise you to use a previous driver version. Download and install this one: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_56.64.html . Uninstall your current driver first. Read the installation tips on the download page. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
Will you report back the result please?

Let me just give a big THANKS to Jospeh and Simulation for the advice and help on getting the TR3 up and running! It looks and sounds fantastic, now that I have installed new drivers, DirectX9.0c, and Service Pack 4. Awesome!

Now that I can actually see the game, I discover that Lara is moving erratically and the gamepad doesn't really control her the way it should. Sometimes the buttons work, sometimes the button assignments change places, and sometimes she just turns in circles on her own. The profiler doesn't change except when the game comes on! Weird! Perhaps I can play with settings or try another Driver for it too? Maybe the answer is to just get a better gamepad. This isn't exactly the best thing out there, but I don't play games much and considered it a special treat to buy Tomb Raider 3. So how can I fix this without spending a load of money to buy a gamepad I will rarely use?

Hopefully this is the last time I will have to ask this, but...any ideas?

Which drivers are you using now, then? The newest, or the older i advised you to install?
About the gamepad: looks to me a bad installed / not good configured gamepad. I think you have to start that part over then. BTW: don't you use JOY TO KEY? (http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA016823/joytokey/english.html) '< - - - linkie.

now i am using the older version as you advised. It seems to have done the trick, and I have also started using Joy to Key. It also does much better for the gamepad, although the buttons still do not act exactly as assigned. Some of the buttons have switched assingments from the configuration I set up in the menu. I cannot get it to set a "roll" feature at all, but the rest of them are there even though they are not as I set them. Even so, the game now works just as it should, I can see everything and the graphics are nice and smooth. I thank you and Simulation very much for giving the advice and leading me to the right places for drivers, etc. I could not have done it without your help.

JoyToKey can be a little temperamental with some of the key assignments. Remap roll on the game menu to M of the keyboard (instead of the default End), and then map M to the button you wish to use on your gamepad with JTK. Other buttons you may have problems with are Side step Left, and Side step Right. Again, remap these IN GAME from Delete & Page Down to L & R respectively, and then assign them with JTK.

Another piece of helpful advice from Neteru- big thanks for that. I have remapped several of the buttons and it is all now working fine. As far as I have gone, there haven't been any of the bugs and hang-ups I have read from other PC players. I really appreciate the help from those on this board and hope to return the kindness in some way.
