I also have the unexpected crashing problems. I have WIN98 but have tried the 2k patch anyway. I am ignorant of what the direct x is so I do not know where or how to install version 7. I do not always crash when using "look", it also happens in the room the the Roman guy's floating head. Please excuse my ignorace but HELP!!!! I will try the NUMLOCKS and see if that helps.

Also the graphics are goofed up on the loading screens.

The 2K patch is designed for NT only, not Windows 98 (in fact, I don't think we even tested the patch running 98 when we created the executable)
Remind me again the memory stat of your card and board. Also, try downloading the latest drivers for your components.
A similar problem occurred with another user, and he wrote back saying he resolved the crashing problem by uninstalling previous versions of TR and then installing Chronicles alone. Might be worth experimenting with.

Ok I was able to locate my Direct x info and I do run version 7.0.

I have unistalled all previous TR's (I had all of them!) and loaded only Chronicles. I am not certain what you mean by memory and card stats but I have 128 MB ram and a 12GB ( i think it is 12 anyway) hardrive with over 80% available space. I have run scan disk, and disk defrag with no errors.

Is it possible I have a bad CD? I have run setup a second time after reinstalling Chronicles to make sure the default setting were still intact.

Back0109. How much memory on your video card ?

1) right mouse click on desktop, go to PROPERTIES, then SETTINGS, then ADVANCED. Your card information should on one of the tabs there.
2) go to dxdiag.exe (which should be in your direct x working directory (in c:\program files\directx)) and information about your card will also be there.
This will determine whether or not your video /3D cards meets the minimum requirements for the game, although I suspect that a configuration I/O problem is causing this error.
Try that first, if no joy, back to this thread and we'll address the Chronicles Setup configuration panel.

Ok, hope this info means something to you because it is greek to me

DX Diag
311 bytes (8192)bytes used

compaq MV500 on Rage LT Pro AGP 2x

I looked at advanced properties, and there were several tabs. "General" gave no memory stats that I could see. Also looked at "performance" tab but there was only a bar set at "full". Tried to download a newer version from Microsoft but got message that said this was most current.

Sorry to be such a pest....

Back0109. No trouble at all. Ok, the ATI Rage Pro x2 is probably an 8MB card, which is fine for Chronicles.
When you first installed the game, you were presented with a setup screen. The bit I'm interested in is the graphical setup. I need to know screen resolution, texture depth and (I know this makes no sense, but humour me) Sound Card setup. List me the "Render" options also.
Also, make sure NO joystick is wired to the PC.

One other thing, for the level loading graphics to be corrupted or missing, your screen resolution or texture depth is too high. Try lowering to default first, then work you way up through the higher resolutions.

Wish I could attach a screen print of set up for you but here goes.

Output setting: Microsoft Direct 3d Hardware acceleration through Direct 3D HAL

Output Resolution: 640x480 16bit

Texture Bit depth- 16bit RGBA 5551

Primary Sound Driver

Render:
only Hardware Acceleration and Bilenear filtering are marked.

I have no joystick and never have had one.

While you are looking at this I will make resolution smaller and see if it helps.

thanks

Ok, changed resolution to 320x200 (lowest possible) and loaded game...crashed almost immediately. (I am at the floating centurion guy). Couldn't go any lower on Texture depth since already at 16 bit

Need more info, this is puzzling.

Is Bilinear Filter on ? (Chronicles setup)
When game crashes, is the PC reading the CD ?

If filter is on, turn it off and try.

Bilenear was checked on setup so I guess that means it was on. I unmarked the box and loaded my saved game. Was taking aim at eyes when I crashed. I was able to hold aim with revolver for a short while before crashing....but I had not hit the "shoot" button when I got bumped out to desktop. Computer was making clicking noises so I think it is reading the CD when it dies.

back1019. Bear with me for five minutes, I'm trawling through Microsofts DirectX support pages to confirm that DirectX 7.0 does actually support you card.

Also, can you pop over to http://support.a***ech.ca/drivers/rageltpro.html
The above link are latest drivers for the RAGE LT PRO.

I'm going to move this thread to the Tech Forum (go back to the main forum page and it's near the bottom of the list) so I'll meet you over there.

File is 7MB, so it might take a while. This exhausts my current line of suggestions, until I can confirm you card is supported by Direct X.
If this update doesn't work, back to this thread and I'll contact MS and Eidos.

Okay-

I really appreciate all of your help on this. Will you still be available in 40 minutes or so to see if the driver works or do you want to continue this problem tomorrow?

hello...what else could be causing the game to crash?

tlr online
02-12-00, 05:22
The probable causes are mis-configuration or an outdated/incompatible driver/card version, assuming the system meets the games technical specifications.
