View Full Version : Installation Problems
Hi there,
I haven't found any topics on installing the game...
Probably the only one having problems? Got the game (PC version) yesterday and after installing it, it won't go beyond the trailer with the butler in the car... It just returns to Windows (98SE).
My pc: PII400MHz, 128MB, 10Gb HD, Viper V770 Ultra with latest Detonator 3 drivers.
I've got all the other Tomb Raider Games and they all work. A version.txt on the Chronicles cd reads:Version 1.0 - 16th October 2000.
Registered to Eidos Interactive Germany.10014
To be returned to Core Design Limited, 2 Roundhouse Road, Pride Park, Derby, DE24 8JE
This version is early development code and is currently 85% complete.
Language on box is Dutch. CD is English. Anyone encountered this before?
PS: I have the same prob with the Level Editor CD.....
Thanx.

Can't talk to the version information you included, but will say my biggest problem with the three most recent TR games have been with sound issues, not video. You don't mention what you have for sound or what level your DirectX is. I know Eidos explicitly says the DirectX sound files must be at least at version 7. (Other users in this forum have indicated DirectX version 8 has caused problems.)
While my hardware is different than yours, I'm running on 98SE without problem.

Check you setup options, and make sure you are not exceeding the limits of your card with screen res. and also texture depth. My advice would be to begin using the default options then build up in quality.
DirectX 7, as mentioned by japarker, is essential to run Chronicles, and the most common fault with premature exiting from the game is caused by either X8 or outdated video card drivers.
I'm moving this thread to the Technical Support forum, so try the above and reply there.
Thanx for the quick replies. I'm running DirectX7 (I already had it but have run it again from the CD).
Sound is SB64...
One question though... what about the last line from the version.txt: "This version is early development code and is currently 85% complete." What does this meen??
Thanx again...

This from an article we published on the version text file:
Following the release of Tomb Raider Chronicles in PC flavours on Friday 24th November, we received a tip this afternoon about a version.txt file suggesting to it's owner that the CD is in development and should be returned to CORE. Curious, we popped our CD into the tray, searched for "version.txt" and found the following contents in it's file.
"Tomb Raider: Chronicles and Lara Croft (c) & TM Core Design Limited 2000.
All Rights Reserved. Version 1.0 - 16th October 2000.
Registered to Eidos Interactive Germany.10014
To be returned to Core Design Limited
This version is early development code and is currently 85% complete."
Now according to a comment made by an Admin at the Eidos Forum, this is either "our imagination" or we are in possession of a "pre-release" copy of Tomb Raider Chronicles.
We, however, suspect the files residence on so many UK released CD's to be a genuine mistake, otherwise such a comment could suggest that a beta went gold instead of the full version.
This was later confirmed by a update to the thread reporting that the file was placed on CD's for tracking purposes, adding "It would appear that the U.K. (and possibly other foriegn versions) did not remove that file
before mastering the release version. That file does not appear on the U.S. release version of the game."
The inclusion of "foreign versions" might be adddressing a claim that a copy of Chronicles purchased in Asia also containted the same version file. No official comment on the mixup has yet been made.
LOL! THanks for clarifying that one....
I just got this reply to a mail I send to Eidos Techsupport:
"They simply forgot to delete the file off the original CD. Don't worry the
version you have does have the complete game and that file is (incorrectly)
on the CD is also on all the CD's on the market."

I asked this question after I send a mail asking about my installation problems. The reply to that mail was:
"Could be a faulty CD. Try changing the disk with the retailer."
Kind regards

What next? Keep on trying to install or get a new copy?
Thanx.

Pimmie. I would suggest uninstalling the game then installing a second time, this will not remove your existing game saves. Also reinstall DirectX 7.0 (it's on the TRC CD) and double check your video card drivers are the current version (what's the make a model of your card and I'll do it for you ??)
Failing that, and only after you've done the above! change your CD with your retailer.

Thanks,
I'm downloading as we speak...
I'll install it for a third time (haven't got any gamesaves 'cause I haven't played yet... http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/forums/wink.gif with the new videocard drivers.
I've installed DirectX8 yesterday and also removed my Gamepad (read that on the forum somewhere).
If this doesn't work I will go to my retailer (I actually have to return it within 24 hrs if it doesn't work)
Thanx again!
I'll keep you 'posted'...

Good luck!
Installed the new drivers for the V770 (a lot of version conflicts), deinstalled and reinstalled DirectX and TR => no difference.
After this I installed TR on W2K (which is possible according to the readme) and it caused a DrWatson in PCtomb5.exe under W2K.... I'm beginning to suspect a faulty CD..... http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/forums/frown.gif
Hi there,
Got my new TRC copy with Christmas from my girlfriend (she's gonna miss me the next few weeks... http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/forums/wink.gif)
Didn't have a computer at my disposal the last few days so I'm gonna try to install it tonight and maybe I can finally play it!
Greetings, Pimmie
Hello again,
I had major difficulties in installing my new TRC Copy under W98 (again) which resulted in not being able to play.
Had a luminous thought and installed Windows Millennium on a removable HD. Installed TRC and now I've almost finished TRC...(!) So a fresh install of Windows Me did the trick, don't ask me how, but it did...
tlronline, thanx for all the support.
Greetings and best wishes for the new year.
Pimmie
