Ok, i installed TLR and it crashes unless i disable the sound card.
I have a YAMAHA DS-XG Direct Sound Driver.

Any ideas on how to overcome this problem and be able to play it with the joy of sound??

Thanks,
V.

Van - direct your mouse to the official Eidos patch below, which may well solve your problem. Also ensure you are using the supplied version of DirectX.

Good luck!

Van. message received, looking into this for you now and I'll return to this thread later today. In the meantime, please give me a basic run down of your system specs and all volumes of RAM (sys and vid.) - also driver versions if you have them, and o/s (operating system)

*sigh* sorry, its me again...

I decided to play the training level despite having no sound...
Reached the point where I should have been able to be taken to the Iris race training level... but Von Croy won't open the doors to either passage (Virtuous or Heretic). I had all 8 skulls but he just stood at the entrance to the room not moving at all.

So... I decided to load the game on a friends computer (because his plays most games with no problems) so that i could hear if i had missed an instruction Von Croy had given... It was then that i discovered that i was missing most of the little movies that have instructions... The only two i see are the first one where Von Croy talks, and the one where Lara gets her first backpack.
I assume this is part of the same problem???
Does this mean that I can never progress any further in the game without sound??

Hope you can find me some solution so my insane computer can learn to cope. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Thanks for all your help so far, I've really appreciated it. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Van. Asus has posted drivers for many of it's onboard sound cards, and the driver version for your model appears to be more recent than your current version.

Direct your mouse to the link below and install v4.10.2104. Let me know if this works. Sorry for the delay in responding to your post.

Van. not forgotten at all. I'm going to suggest something completely diff. You never know, it might work, but if it doesn't, it will certainly reduce the possibilities.

Go here:
http://support.ati.com/products/pc/graphics/index.html

Locate your ATI Video Card and download the latest video card drivers. I know it's a long shot, but if there is a driver conflict occurring here, it could be caused by video.

At any rate, try this, in the meantime, I'll keep on this one.

I should have mentioned that I tried that.... it ended up really messing up my system and then after hunting through the compaq website i found that they require you to use their driver updates (something to do with the way the board is built, if I remember rightly its something about the card being specially built into the motherboard (just another way Compaq makes life difficult)). But there was no update for that driver. So I had to go back to the original driver.

I'm still working on the problem from here as well but havent found any solutions yet. I'll make sure I post and let you know what I try.

Found an alternate driver for the ati rage 128 vid card... but still hasnt solved the problem.

I wouldnt mind so much about the lack of sound if I could still play the game but being stuck in the training level because of this problem is frustrating.

Howdy. I've emailed Eidos Tech Support again. I'll find a solution one way or another, everyone I've spoken to here is at a complete loss. Sorry it's taking so long.

Computer guys living near me suggested updating the motherboard BIOS. I've contacted the manufacturer of my board and am waiting for a response.

Van

My motherboard is an Award motherboard. Unfortunately my attempts to contact them have been unsucessful (despite the fact that their online form said that they return requests within 48 hours).

Still cannot play the game since Von Croy will not open the door to either passage (Virtuous or Heretic).
And still cannot get the game to load if sound is enabled.

Have you had any further ideas? I'm all out.

Thanks.
Van.

Something interesting which may give more info about what's wrong:

I had a thought that perhaps if I downloaded a save of a higher level it would mean that at least I could play the game past the training level but still without sound.
However, when I loaded the saved game the program crashed just like it does when I have sound enabled.

Just narrowed the field even further.
Unistalled the Aureal 3D- game still crashed. (I subsequently re-installed it).

Installed a friends Sound Blaster Sound Card into the computer- made sure that the card was working and then tried the game. Result- game still crashed.
So since it's apparently not the sound card or the Aureal 3d then I guess the only thing left is the video card.

Hi Van. Thanks for the additional information. This one continues to puzzle me, but a collegue wonders whether or not you have a virus scanner running in the background, and also if you are starting the game from the CD instead of the start menu link ?

Thanks.

Van

I was running McAfee virus shield in the background. So I shut that down and trid the game- it still crashed.
I've been loading from the start menu link. Although I have also tried starting from the CD autostarted menu. It crashed with both.

At the moment I'm in contact with Compaq to hopefully get a driver update for my video card.

I just got in touch with Compaq Tech Support - they said to go to the ATI website and download driver update- v4.11.6216
I did this and installed it but the problem is still there.

I also tried lowering the acceleration on the card- the first two settings
(None, and Basic) caused the program to crash and spit out an invalid page
fault message. On the second two settings the program just crashed as usual
with no error messages.

I'm not holding out much hope of ever getting this game working- don't know what else to try.

:(
