Anyone who knows computers really well, can i have some help?? I am looking for a card to replace my GeForce 256 so that I can play tomb raider AOD. I can't decide between the GeForce 4 Ti 4200 or the GeForce FX 5200. Which one would work better I guess is what I am asking.

The Geforce4 Ti4200 it's a more powerful card than the GeforceFX5200.

Both should do the job equally well Pie Tin.

I have a TI4200 and it runs ALL my games fine and I expect it will run AOD fine too.
But bear in mind that the FX 5200 has DX9 Support and should see future games take advantage of its features, and the best will squeezed from that card later on its life.

If you can squeeze the little extra cash, go for the FX5200 ultra, or a 5600, they have faster memory and clock speeds than the 5200 and will run all your games comfortably, no problems.

Theres also some good deals on ATI cards now..

The choice is yours - e-mail me if you need further assistance

Yes, it's Dx9 but, how many games use Dx9? The AOD game use DX9 but the game was programed using Dx8.1, so nothing interesting for this game. And when games use DX9 features the card was old.
And the Fx5200 it's very much slower than the 4200Ti, i tested two cards and you can view much web comparatives.

I agree the TI is probably a better card, but it all depends on how much dough the lad has to spend. Not everyone can afford the best cards

I dont know where hes from but:

TI4200 for around 120 - 130 depending on the make
FX5200 for around 70
FX5200 Ultra around 100

Cash limitaions aside, its all about preference - Soon all games will be programmed using DX9 API, and the FX Cards are built to take full advantage of that.
The Ti may be a better card speed wise, but the others will run AOD with no problems, and if your after saving a bit of cash...need I say more.

You pay your money and take your choice...Over to you my friend!

Yes, two cards run Aod fine, but Ti4200 it's much faster card, i see two card for the same money, about 100-105.
And DX9 only have a pair of new instruction, nothing special important for play all games perfectly.
If you see two cards for the same money, the Geforce4Ti of course! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

Ive been told that the Geforce TI 4800 is now only 120.00 because of the release of the FX series. I would personally go with the TI 4800 becasue the FX is riddled with problems (so ive heard) it apparently sounds like an extremely lound hair drier and isnt as fast as the Ti series. Have u thought about getting a radeon card instead??? 9500 are going cheap.

If your on a budget, theres not many cards around in the said category that wont run AOD.
Remember - the lad only wants his card to run the game, and were peppering him with allsorts of responses here - and probably confusing him even more in the process.

Try to keep it simple... :D

One other thing to consider is if your new card is AGPx4 or AGPx8.Dont know if the new x8 ones work on x4 AGP slots, as they are a different voltage.Just thought i would mention it.

Pie TinWhere are you located at? (for pricing purposes)

any yes if you have the money the GeForce 4 Ti 4200 is a better video card. The FX series are major garbage http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/whistle.gif

If he has that sort of cash to spend, Id say the same.
I have an MSI Ti4200 128MB and it runs everything I throw at it without any worries whatsoever.

just got the new "Star Trek elite forces 2" game..

Graphics are gorgeous, a good 70 - 80 FPS @1280X1024 @85 HZ. very nice indeed.

Thanks for all your help! I live in the US, WI to be more exact. The difference between the prices of the cards are not a problem. Another thing i was considering is the "pixel shader 2.0". I read on another thread that the Pixel shader helps w/ the slowdowns because they are often caused by the rain and the pixel shader was suppose help "make the rain" so to speak. I know the FX card has it but I am not sure about the Ti. Is the Pixel Shader that big of a deal that it could be a deciding factor??
Thanks again!

Dan, ;)

As far as I know.......Pixel shader 2.0 is Nvidia specific and is only available on the new FX Range.

Dont worry - the Ti4200 will run AOD fine. When programmers write game engines, they normally program to the lower common denominator and cater for the lower end machines first. The Ti4200 is still a beast of a card with more than enough juice to run this game.

***DISCLAIMER***
But dont take me to court if it doesnt run it...just kidding bad yank joke. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

The graphic engine is very sweet indeed.. if your card supports high end features it will be taken advantage of in the game.

The extra detail you get is simply awesome

Pie TinHehe.. glad someone seeing a funny side to the delays http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif If you wanting a card that is gonna last a little while longer then depending on ya budget the nVidia FX 5900 and the Radeon 9800 are ya best bets.. they are true dx9 cards, and they both truly rock in TRAOD..

Jay Walker, how important is a DX 9 card?? Because I don't think the Ge Force4 has that capibility?? Could it be a deciding factor?? Unless i am wrong?

Well true dx9 cards will obviously do things better under dx9 then those which aint.. i believe (might be wrong) that all Ge4's are dx8.1 but can do some stuff on 9 cos of drivers but aint true dx9

Just think of upcoming releases.. Deus2, Doom3, Half Life 2, all gonna look SO much nicer on the new hardware http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Rememer u can get 'cheaper' versions of the FX and Radeon.. just shop around
