View Full Version : Lara belongs on the PC.....

I have played all the console versions of the Tomb Raider games, and i have found that only the PC versions have the best graphic quality and 0 percent framerate slow-down. Not only that, but the Gold levels of the first three tomb raiders are only available for PC. In addition to that, you can use the level editor, and download new levels from http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com for the PC.

So it is a true fact... Lara does belong on the PC

I myself am a PC man..

But I never forget this:

It was the humble old PSX that introduced me to Tomb Raider way back in 1996.. (Jeezzz, that seems so long ago now) remember how we marvelled at the 3D world we had to roam in. IT had never been done before had it?

To the Playstation, we all should be eternally greatful - Dont you think?

TR has sold MUCH more copies on Playstation than PC.

TR always works and is always compatible with Playstation, compared to PC versions (just check these forum pages riddled with PC gamers with no sound, no cut-scenes, crashes etc.)

I was Playstation that made Lara a star, not PC.

It's a simple fact that, despite the graphics being better on PC, MOST TR players are Playstation players, so your statement 'Lara belongs on the PC' is mis-judged.

As someone above said, Lara belongs in the digital domain, so let's agree to disagree and have Lara where we want her to be...

Emm... I think Lara belongs on a screen... What's then connected to that screen I don't so much care about. I do agree on the framerate tho. Never had any problems on the PC, but it's nicer to skip the keyboard and just hold a pad.

NEway, still vote for SCREEN!!! hehe

Hang on a sec guys, I've only ever played Lara on PC BUT I don't use the keyboard, I connect a pad to the UBS port and voila', I carry her everywhere on my laptop!

Say aren't PCs used to create games for PS2??

Lady_Croft

Well, i think that Lara belongs to the screen..

Though i love playing at PS/PS2 but PC is also good.

Playstation is more easier..You don't have to buy latest graphic cards etc.

Lara doesn't belong on the PC!

The PC version is always de last which came out!

Sony has been involved with Tomb Raider since the begging, an the main plataform for Tomb Raider is the PlayStation!

So Lara belongs on the Sony consoles! ;)

Yes, I agree. Lara has always been a 'flagship' game for the playstation.
The other advantage of the playstation is that the ps usually sits in the living room and can be enjoyed by all the family. PC's are usually in someones bedroom or attic etc. and is generally a solitary experience.

Some good points there made by everyone:

I like nice, healthy discussion on a friday afternoon (When I should really be working) LOL http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/bash.gif

I do like the PC versions of the games, they are just so much more pleasing on the eye for me.
But it is so much more relaxing on the playing them on playstation, sat in the living room on a comfy sofa ect (with someone bringing you food ect) lol

You get the idea eh?

Well, I've only played it on the PC but I think they're equal. Ps had her first but there is something special about PC Lara too. You can update your Pc but PS2 you can't do too much upgrading. Hopefully Lara will look great on the PC and won't have slowdowns. But Tomb Raider is usaully geared towards ps and ps2. I personally like Lara for PC because the only console I have is an old N64. She sort of belongs to both worlds.... http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/bash.gif

well, i prefer Lara on the PC basically coz i don't own (and don't wish to own) a PS2.
i tried the PS2 at a friends place once. once very impressed with the graphics (esp since he owned those cinematic sized flatscreen tvs :D  ). but the controls really turned me off, especially when we played tomb raider TLR.
Lara on the PC is so much more manoeverable and accurate. and the controls are so easy to grasp ( i expect it will be the same with AOD pc version). also, i maintain that since PS games are created on PCs (i think), then the PS is essentially a PC. HENCE LARA IS A PC GIRL!

PS(no pun intended): whoever said that the PS had a more family experience and PC is more one-on-one, he's not far from the truth. the last thing i'd want is mommy looking over my shoulder while this big-boobed bimbo traversed weird terrains and shoots everthing in sight (she'll never let me play TR again!).

I am rolling on the floor LAUGHING http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/jumper.gif Wow i truly must say that everyone has made good points. I guess it goes to what you have the better set up. For example. The 6 Tomb Raider games run on my PC with 0 precent framerate problems, but once again that is my PC setup, also i have a 20" computer monitor, which is technically superior image quality to any normal TV, flatscreen or not. (dunno about HDTV tho) I also have a calbe that outputs my PC sounds to a 650 watt Surround sound system. Finally, i have a PS2 like Gamepad, so i miss out on nothing with my setup. Now, if you have ur PC miles away from a sound system, and all u have is the two PC speakers, and you have no gamepad, and finally you have a PC card that cannot handle TR, then of course your best option is PSX. I just titled that "lara belongs on the PC" to see what kind of discussion i would arise, the reality of it, is that Lara does not "belong" anywhere. only in our hearts.

So, not that anyone has mentioned it, but are we all in agreement that Lara does NOT belong on the Game Boy Advance?!! I tried that blasted game once...don't even remember what it was called...but it drove me crazy!

Lara belongs for the TWO VERSIONS. Even that I prefer to play TR in the PC, both the versions have their quality and issues.

I'm not a Playstation person, I'd enjoy sitting in front of the Television for hours straight doing nothing but playing games and getting fat; but I do tend to use other forms of entertainment [i.e. READING] for pleasure. I happen to think those game systems are quite bad for anyone's health, and I also believe that why the majority of kids are overweight in various countries are because of those over-priced machines. At least on a PC not only do you get games, you get just about everything else [information, internet, etc].

My advice: don't buy your kids a Playstation.

Duhlevon
28-06-03, 02:57
ummm. I think that if your kids want a playstation you should buy them one, because then they will decide for themselves if they want to be in the world of gaming or the world of sports and let them grow up to be what they want to be, insead of being a Nazi, and giving them restrictions to force them to become what YOU want them to be.

Duhlevon, you need to grow up & get a major grip!

Duhlevon wrote:

Good idea Duhlevon...parents should just BEND OVER & completely submit to the whims of their children! That's all we need...more spoiled, fat, lazy kids. God forbid that kids actually go out & earn it on their own. Can't wait 'till you have kids.

Then Duhlevon commented:
"they will decide for themselves if they want to be in the world of gaming or the world of sports"

It IS possible that they could do both.

Duhlevon finished his opus with:
"let them grow up to be what they want to be, ins(t)ead of being a Nazi, and giving them restrictions to force them to become what YOU want them to be."

Spoken like a true, snot-nosed 18 year-old who doesn't have a clue about the real world. We are, after all, only talking about a video game.

By the way, only ignorant folk casually throw around the word "Nazi" to describe people that give them a hard time. I suggest you read up on what Hitler & the National Socialists ACTUALLY did before you try to sound all clever in the future.

Also, being a parent means that you have to make hard choices that your children are completely incapable of making. Frankly, who are you to tell parents what they should do on THIS SUBJECT?

Sadly, I thought you would have had something more constructive to say.

Tomb Raider1 came out first on the PC in Nov 1996.
The PS version was about a week later. In fact nearly every TR game came out first on the PC.
So Lara does belong on the PC more than the PS as its her roots.

All PC versions of TR1-5 allow you to save anywhere you like whenever you like. The collecting crystals are only for the PS as it could not handle save anywhere in the earlier games.

The PS versions of TR are cut down from the PC as they not only have blocky, murky graphics with low resolution bland textures but low quality sound & music as well.

All PS games are created on a PC running a Sony Dev kit which acts like an emulator to allow developers to program a PS game. The usual reason for any console delay is that it takes much longer to cut down the game to run in the limited resources on a console.

Compare any PC version of TR to the PS one and you can see a huge difference in the gameplay as it is very smooth plus the loading is almost instant.

The only reason consoles are currently more popular than PC's with developers is that casual gamers are not interested in any configuration hassle on the PC they just wanna play the game and do not notice the vastly superior graphics & sound as a TV screen loses a lot of picture detail. The other reason is that console games sell much more than PC ones as PC games are very easy to copy yet console games are not and if anyone does they run the risk of burning the laser out in their DVD drive.

So Lara does belong on the PC more than the PS as its her roots. It actually came out first on the Sega Saturn so perhaps she belongs there? And being somewhere 1 week earlier than somewhere else is a pretty shallow argument anyway.

The only PS games that don't have a save anywhere option are 1 and 3; as 2 comes before 3 I don't quite believe this.

The playstation came out in 1994 though so give it a break. As for the sound and music issue, I don't think what you say is true at all, the music and sound seem just the same to me. Except for TR1 of course where the playstation sound is superior to the pc version.

1) Consoles are far cheaper (yes, money IS an issue to some people, including me).
2) Having to configure and setup a game is not just a hassle, but also nigh-on incomprehensible to some people.
3) PC's need regular hardware updates to keep up with things. Consider that the playstation was released in 1994 and allowed you to play TR: Chronicles at the end of 2000 without the need for any upgrades or maintenance whatsoever.

Obviously there are lots of benefits to playing on a pc, just as there are for the playstation. But all this petty fanboy pointscoring is completely pointless, it just seems to be about insecurity and trying to get people to tell you you are right so you can sleep at night. If you really prefer the pc that much then good for you, enjoy your games and stop whining.
