Introduce yourself to the GAME folk, Adrian... How did you get into games?
My name is Adrian Smith and I am Operations Director at Core and Executive Producer on Tomb Raider - The Angel of Darkness. My brother Jeremy set up Core Design in 1988, I joined him 18 months later.

For those who have been living on the moon, what's the Angel of Darkness all about?

A desperate phone call from Lara's former mentor Werner Von Croy leads her to Paris. Von Croy has been asked by a sinister client, Eckhardt, to track down one of the Obscura Paintings - five 14th century artworks, which he is desperate to possess. She arrives to find the Parisian streets gripped with terror following the attacks of a violent serial killer. Von Croy has been the victim of a horrific murder and framed for the crime, Lara becomes a fugitive on the run. Pursued by the police, she follows Eckhardt's trail from the back streets of Paris to the hellish depths of Prague, where plans to reawaken and exploit the powers and secrets of the Nephilim race are underway. It is up to Lara stop Eckhardt and a powerful group of individuals calling themselves 'The Cabal' from unleashing their incredible alchemic powers on the world.

What new gameplay elements have been added to the usual Tomb Raider arsenal? How will the new stealth and targeting modes work?

We've introduced some major new gameplay features including character evolution - the ability to improve Lara's abilities depending on how you play the game, character interaction and for the first time in a Tomb Raider game a new playable character - Kurtis Trent. Lara also has several new moves including hand-to-hand combat, stealth mode, 'last-chance' grab and free-form climb. Her stealth mode will be very familiar to people who have played Metal Gear Solid. The targeting system is very similar to the previous system, we don't want the player to spend time lining up a target, instead the focus is on all out action.

We hear that Lara can interact more with other characters, how will this work?
Lara can talk to NPCs and the choices she makes in conversation can affect her route through the game.

It's increasingly difficult for games icons (Lara included) to keep making an impact - would you agree? How will Lara compete with the latest characters?
I agree, but in Lara we are in the very privileged position of possessing the world's biggest gaming icon. Lara will certainly make a big impact in 'The Angel of Darkness', she has been totally restyled and looks better than ever, she is now made up of over 5,000 polygons, as opposed to just 500 in previous games.

Are there many added extras for the PC version, can it be modded etc?
We have been working very closely with major 3D video card manufactures to make sure the game fully exploits the graphical power available. However in terms of content, the PC version is identical to the PS2 version.

How much darker is Lara, should younger fans look away?
Lara hasn't really changed but the game's story is a lot darker than previous games. We wanted to put Lara in situations she has not faced before and see how she reacts.

Is there a limit to how dark or horrific a place you would take Lara to?
Yes, definitely. When we originally started working on the game we toyed with the idea of Lara becoming an alcoholic, but we thought it was a little extreme. The game has certainly become more mature but apart from obvious graphical improvements Lara hasn't changed.

How inspired by the Tomb Raider movie were you?
Not at all. At the end of the day the film is based on the game. We discussed burning down Croft Manor in Angel of Darkness, but this might make it a bit awkward for the movie people - that's as much as we've ever tied in to the movie.

What did you think of the Tomb Raider movie (c'mon, be honest!)
As no-brainer action movie it was great. Financially it was a great success and it helped take the awareness of the brand to a whole new level.

Bar this outing, which is your personal favourite Tomb Raider title, and why?
It's a really hard one to answer as each one has elements that I have enjoyed for different reasons but certainly one of my favourite bits is from the original Game from "The Lost Valley Level" where you come face to face with the T Rex for the first time. Its one of those moments when you think what next and bang a great big T-Rex comes racing towards you.

What's been the most challenging part of development, whether on the PC or PS2?
The technology. The game employs a brand new engine on a new platform and at the onset we set ourselves some pretty high goals. One of which was to have the game running at a constant 60fps (frames per second), it was bloody hard to achieve but I'm pleased to say we got there in the end.

How will Croft-fans remember this outing in years to come?
Hopefully as the beginning of a new era for the Tomb Raider series
