View Full Version : Am I the oonly 1 who thinks Lara should have stayed in Tombs?

Nextgen sounds cool but I really think she should stick to raiding tombs, searching for artifacts and saving the world. Art theft and police chases aren't really her style - after all she's an aristocrat. Does anyone agree?

adback. Core Design have expressed their intention to change the current direction of their Tomb Raider titles, moving away from the traditional tomb raiding game and into a new, more adult orientated, fresh environment. Do you think that after a while looting tombs will get a tad boring ?

I think TR:NG should move in the direction of Oni: urban cityscapes, more real-time hand to hand combat, a good, plausible plot, more important characters, and instead of DirectX OpenGL. And more realism in the environnement too (eg bulletholes, mirrors,...). You'll have to confess TR has always been mediocre of background textures and detail! i hope Paris (TR:NG, remember) will be better worked out. Thàt would be my utopic TR.

I still prefer tombs.. Lara is for tombs.. if they want cities n police, why not make another game?

I just think without Tombs it's not Tomb Raider. If they have to change it they should have a split between Tombs and Cities like in Chronicles. You have to admit though being chased by riot police is really not Lara's style

Tante_Betsy
28-08-01, 18:44
Yes it is, she can do that in style too!
The tomb-thingie became quite boring after TLR. TRC already is a giant step fwd (the VCi levels at least). She could be like... La Femme Nikita! :D (yes I actually watch that feuilleton)

I dont' think a change would be bad, I know I got kinda bored with the same old scene after a while. Besides that sometimes the Tomb Scenes could get pretty creepy... spiders... eck! I think it would be cool to do something a bit more modern----not tombs. I enjoyed jumping around London.

Granted, being a theif isn't quite Lara's style, and getting chased by police doesn't sound like her style, because normally she'll shoot everyone. Are we gonna be calling Lara a Cop Killer???? It really sounds more like a Dark Angel scenario that they're thinking of. Maybe they should come out with a whole new character for that scene. I don't like the Hand to Hand thing, there are so many other games out there... and I'm not too good at it.

One thing I liked about the second game was that in Tibet, I didnt' have to kill every character. I liked having good guys and bad guys. Made it more challenging, and I wouldn't go around every corner with guns blazing.

I like the Lara Croft games, but her character isn't the Modern Day theif type at all... That is unless somone robbed her of her fortune when she was supposedly dead, and she's trying to get it all back. Hey, there's a story line that would promote theivery.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm definately with adback14, The only non-tomb environment from TR1 was Atlantis, and that was one heck of a level, and the enemies were non-human(except for the "bosses"). TR3 should have been called Jungle-City Raider. I hated London, it was the worst scenerio, it shouldn't have been made, I don't know why it was made. But the jungle's OK. TR4 was my favorite because of the tomb atmosphere, raiding tombs will never get boring for me. But that's just the way I think. But if they must make Lara raid cities, it's better than no raider at all! We can all agree on that.

07-09-01, 15:20
finally some1 who agrees with me, my point is Lara does move around from tombs to cities etc but a total change to her image, location and what she raids all in 1 go isn't a good idea.

I think it is better than searching for tombs and saving the world because it is really scary when mummys come up from the ground and can neverget killed.

Maybe what Tomb Raider needs is not a change in environment but adding a few more characters that Lara can interact with.

Trinity34. yup, I believe Core Design have done just that. Curtis is one particular character, who has similar goals as Lara during the adventure. Take a peek at Curtis and the rest below:

I have to say I`m with Betsy and SuzanneM. The Tomb thing is fun especially TRLR.But do you want tombs like TRLR or TR1?Seems to me there are two different styles- alone or with company.
Lara a cop killer? She didn`t have a problem with MP`s and they deserved it! :D

Me Again!

Okay, after some consideration and reading what everyone else has got to say, I will admit some variety would be good.

But the thing I really would hate to see change about Lara is the fact that there are good guys and there are bad guys. Lara is a good guy. With this new game she's going to be on the fringe. Granted, some people would rally to that, but frankly I like the fact that there are lines to be drawn. What fun is it if you literally have to kill every single person you see. Is everyone in life a bad guy?

I liked it that in game two I didn't have to kill the Tibetian Monks, I liked it in ---what was it, game three I think, that Lara kinda joined forces with the mutant faced guys to chase after the mean lady who used them for experiments for her beauty company (that is the way it went isn't it... it's been a while)...

But all the same, she didn't have to go and kill literally every single person there was out there.

I'd play all the games out there as they are... until we get to hand to hand stuff. That is practially the ONLY reason why I even got my first TR game... NO HAND TO HAND. I'm just not good at it. I would not buy another TR game if that's what it went to.

Talk to you all later

That's exactly the way I feel, no hand to hand combat, only guns :D
But I'm for tombs all the way, I especially liked the feel of TR1, very deserted with nothing but wolves, crocs, and the ocassional big nasty undiscovered Atlantian Denizens :D

I'm telling you guys, Lara should revisit Atlantis, or at least the real ancient Rome (not the streets)

Here's how I think of it..Lara is a TombRaider but she is also an adventurer..I kind of enjoyed playing the different scenarios in TR3 than the whole tomb thing in TRLR..but she is good at what she does and I don't think they need to go and make NexGen all different. I had enough of changes already in TRC. I just hope they realize that they got a good thing already and that they keep to the style that has made TR what it is.

Atlantis would be cool or another sort of mythical place where there's no strict rules on the envioronment and enemies but im still for Tombs all the way

I don't like changes of any kind, but she can't stay in tombs all her life. There is a whole game on tombs, so I don't care what she does next as long as it is as exciting as before. I just hope they don't keep changing her image, that upsets me.

Well, I think a diversion from the constand tomb raiding is needed, BUT don't make the next generation of TR games weird. The Last Revelation was interesting, and had a nice storyline, but it really was same old TR with better graphics. Now, Chronicles is absolutely fabulous, it's not always dark and dingy and underground, the VCI building levels are absolutely awesome, reminds me of a high tech die hard, exept with a female heroine. The russian submarine base, and the submarine and underwater levels, are quite cool, they are something unique that we haven't seen before. The first levels of Chronicles would please your die hard tomb raidin' fans, but still give a new approach to it. The only thing I don't like about Chronicles is the young lara level. It's too dark, creepy, and just plain weird. I would love to see a diversion from the old TR games with the next gen's, but don't make Lara evil, don't make her do bad things, Lara Croft has been someone who in a video game sense, would be admired for strength, and a clean, but teasing image. I think it's a good idea to make it more adult natured, again, another diversion from the TR's of old, but please, don't make her look bad... The thing of being rescued out of the gutter of of an alchohol and drug binge, that's not adult, that's just bad taste. That isn't the Lara Croft anyone wants to see... Being framed for crimes she didn't commit, fine, but she doesn't have to lose her sophistication and charm. Basically, to the city and urban environments, GO FOR IT, but please don't ruin Lara Croft. :(

Hello and good day, my opinion on this is that althought a street adventure of high adrenaline sounds really cool and it should because that's how it's geared. That can also be its downfall because I feel like this is really degrading to laura, and I say that because in the streets killing cops really shows her as some idiot with a gun. While the tomb raider we know is shown as a brave genius, finding the secrets of the ancient world. Either way I'm awaiting laura's next endever.

Wow I didnt know so many people had ideas on this. I agree Lara should keep a a balance between Tombs, Rome style areas and new areas like the VCI tower. That way there's a mix between the TLR Adventure style and the VCI stealth/combact style. What I'd like to see is Lara going back to Egypt to find out what happened after after it collapsed to try and remember what happened.

15-10-01, 23:09
You're probably always correcting Americans because Laura is a pretty common name/spelling whereas Lara isn't. I'm sure that "u" sneaks in subconsciously. ;)

You have to remember, Tomb Raider and Lara aren't all that heavily advertised over here (hard to imagine, I know). There's no commercials featuring her or publicity surrounding her games. The only real media attention Lara got here was due to the Tomb Raider movie.

well i think that they should have let lara play in tombs in tr2, or atleast in the first few levels, and then slowly go over to other types of levels.. I think if all of the games would have found place in tombs, it would be pretty boring..

Hi everyone. I'm new today and this topic is right up my alley.I got hooked with tr1 and have stuck ever since. What I like best about tr is the adventure and exploring not the killing of everything that moves(well, almost everything). I really like searching every dusty nook and crannie for anything I can find and warking out the puzzles.I hated the london underground and subways but the jungle was fun.I don't want to see Lara as a cop killer and the idea of hand to hand really SUCKS.Does anyone else think that two players who actually have to help to get through the game would be great. I don't mind taking out a t-rex or natla but I didn't think killing all the natives was so hot. By the way did anyone else ever figure out the point of the "cave"(for want of a better word) off the planes wing tip in tr3 "Crash Site" level. Surely it couldn't have been just for the save crystal?

04-11-01, 20:13
i think the only way to use hand to hand fighting would be to have it like final fantasy where everytime you fight the screen etc changes and theres a whole new set of controls, the playstation contollers would need extra fighting buttons otherwise

05-11-01, 04:01
Well, I have to say the games could use a change of pace. Probably my favorite parts of the games are racing around in the cars/motorbikes/boats! Hand-to-hand combat could be kinda fun if executed correctly - you could poke your enemy in the eye and then kick him in the groin :D Although, I agree that there should be at least some tomb levels, or they should rename this whole thing - Street Raider!

This sounds a little pointless-
Why is Lara breaking into the Musee de Louvre in the first place? People aren't going to mind so much if she breaks into an old tomb which nobody's set foot in for centuries and comes out with a load of artifacts and riches etc. but people WILL mind if she goes around doing it in cities!!!
Seems so stupid!
I can't imagine she'd HAVE to break into the museum... although I suppose there'll be a reason. But how can she be FRAMED for a crime if she's just gone and ransacked the place?
And tombs... there is definitely a difference between ancient tomb settings and modern day ones. You do need a balance. But I can't imagine there will be many tombs in TNG. They shouldn't have put Lara in this game. And I can't see any hand-to-hand combat working either.

As I really didn't bother to read all the posts let apologize in advance if i'm simply repeating an opinion already posted.

I really really enjoyed tr2 the venice levels in particular. They were just beautiful. The kind of romantic and classy surroundings i like to think a girl like Lara would approve of for a bit of late night breaking and entering. The very last lvl (in the mansion) was well appreciated to http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I really enjoyed tlr from beginning to end (well, with the exception of the exterior pyramid lvl's). The seeming authenticity of the environment really got me involved in the archealogical side of tr.

Was kinda hoping that any kind of sequel would combine that sexy james bond classiness with a real authentic feeling tomb environment creating a game with both types of levels. A close-knit story with really engaging and authentic feeling lvl's.
Focusing on more tlr-like puzzles (still need badies to shoot of course) would be nice to.

Just took a look at the next generation character sketches...Looks horrible. My Lara has a lot more class and composure than that street corner hussy ;)

I definitely like the old Tomb Raider better! Although I loved TR4, TR1 is the best hands-down. I loved the empty tombs and the levels and I really want to see an entire game based just in South America. I don't really know if I'll even get TRNG; I think I'll check the demo first. It seems not just anything with Lara Croft's name on it can be trusted anymore. She is, and will forever be, a tomb raider, no matter what Core or Eidos do with her. TRNG? I don't think Lara would be impressed.

PS - And even if we think she's running around in Paris, she's actually exploring a tomb deep in the Amazon (the Paris gal is a stunt double).

I really want to see an entire game based just in South America.
I think a bit of globe-hopping is an innate part of TR. The Egyptian thing should be given a rest for NG at least, I think it was a bad idea to set the whole of LR in one country.

Am I the only one who thinks hand-to-hand combat would be good? Shooting someone isn't really fighting, is it? It's much harder to kill someone with your bare hands than just pull a trigger.
"Any bloody fool can pull a trigger" Anyone know what that's from? First right answer gets a lollipop! :D

PS LR was a great game though, I'm currently messing around with a few wads so you can play as Von Croy and ride the bull from Guardian of Semerkhet. Just thought you might want to know.

I think the new game is needed. For a person like me, I get bored with the same old games. Dont get me wrong, i love TR games. But TRC really wasn't a far cry from the original. A few new moves, slightly smoother graphics and a layout that was changed only enough to amuse me. Yes, Lara will always be a tomb raider. But the city levels are a nice break from monotony. Tombs are great, but they can get old. If you want games more like the originals, go play the originals. I like all that I've heard about TRNG. If you want a little bit more of my opinion, go read the post "stop crying". I apologize if anyone is offended. That is not my intention. I only think people should be more open minded and have a little more faith in Core, that's all. I'm sure you will all be pleasantly surprised. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I'm kind of glad, Core is going in a new direction, and from all of Lara's past adventures, someone at Core was well up on Egyptology, for all the great tomb designs and all, maybe someone should visit Mexico, or South America, or even Tibet. While I'm sure all the old graphics can be used and updated as needed. Core should keep in mind Lara is a Tomb Raider, and we love her because she is what she is. If Core wants to make her smarter, faster, more chic, all the better! By blending the features of Deus Ex, and give her stealth, and interaction with other game characters, the game play of say, The Messenger or Riddle of the Sphinx, even though they were point and click, were fun games and the graphics were outstanding. And the puzzles were a challenge (that made you want to play for hours on end!) And while we can make her look sexy, and use her wits, taking her guns and fire power away would be a mistake.
As for me, I can wait to see what Core comes up with for Lara, and Next Gen. If I need to my computer will be upgraded, and a new graphics card will be installed (ATi Radeon II 7500) trueform and all. I'm a Mac user, and maybe the G5's will be out then also. I'll still be a fan of Lara's and be hungry for more of her globe trotting, swimming, driving, splunking, and artifact finding.
Hello! Core are you reading this? ;)
