View Full Version : Windows Movie Maker Problem

Hi! :wve:

I'm encountering some problems with my Windows Movie Maker. The program itself works fine, but when I select to add some effects or transitions to my video clips, it just pops out. Does anybody know what the problem is? Thank you. :)

Maybe the effects to render are a bit too heavy load for your machine. Do one effect at a time. Open Taskmanager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and keep it opened on the "Performance" tab. Watch the load on CPU and Memory while you play around with WMM.

It's not that. When I just click on an effect or on a transition, the window disappears.

 Looks like a bad install. Do you have installed all Windows updates and patches? :pi:

Hmmm... I believe not. See, I re-installed my Windows a couple of weeks ago and when I got my computer back, I saw that some version of Windows Movie Maker (I don't know which exactly) is on it, so I have installed THIS VERSION (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a244/SZM/WindowsMovieMaker.jpg). Now, I have asked my friend about it and he also said that I probably have installed something wrong. And one more thing to add: since I got my computer back I don't have those Automatic Updates anymore. Can they be downloaded from somewhere?

Joseph

In Internet Explorer top menu, open Tools / Windows Update.

Joseph

To my knowledge, Windows Movie Maker is automatically installed with SP2.

To know which version of WMM you have, click on menu Help > Info. I guess you have version 5.1 like i have.

OK, I've installed all the updates, restarted my computer and installed Windows Movie Maker again, but the situation is the same. :( BTW, it's the 5.1 version.

Sorry. Could you re-summarize what happened on your pc since you reinstalled Windows? Did you reinstall it yourself or someone else (you said "since i got my computer back") ?

And could you post your dxdiag report please?

Click Start > Run... type in
dxdiag
Click OK.
Choose to "Save all information"
Open the file in Notepad, select all then copy and paste the complete text into your next reply?

Me re-installing the Windows? You gotta be kiddin'! :o :p

About that 'dxdiag' thing, I got this message when trying to post it:

The text that you have entered is too long (48579 characters). Please shorten it to 30000 characters long.

I trust that can be solved.

In the meantime, use this method then:

Diagnose.exe (http://simulation.tombraiderforums.com/trhub/download/diagnose.exe)

Click on the link, choose to Run. Give it a few moments to create the report, paste the text into your next reply?

Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 1 (2600.xpsp1.020828-1920)

You really should install SP2, Tomb Raider Master!

Tomb Raider Master
14-01-06, 20:48
OK, I'm downloading it right now. :wve: (266 MB, whew!)

Joseph
14-01-06, 21:07
And after you installed it, keep doing Windows Update (all essential updates) untill it is finished.

And then, your C-Media drivers are out of date. Probably you can find them in "optional updates" on the Windows Update site.

Tomb Raider Master
14-01-06, 22:48
Joseph :wve:

I have installed SP2. Now can you please give me a direct link so I can solve the problem with my C-Media drivers? Appreciate it. :)

Joseph
14-01-06, 22:54
I don't know exactly which one from this page (http://www.cmedia.com.tw/e_download_01.htm), Tomb Raider Master.

Couldn't Windows Update offer you the right one?

We can sort it out. Is it the onboard soundchip you have (rather than their pci-card)?

If onboard soundchip, i am certain you need to download and install this one: CM1976A/6CH AC'97 2.3 CODEC from above page. :)

Tomb Raider Master
14-01-06, 23:05
Hang on. You said that proper C-Media drivers for my computer are installed via Automatic Updates?

Joseph
14-01-06, 23:36
No: you could try. Look on the Windows Update page. On the left pane you should see a link for optional updates / driver updates?

[Edit: forget that. They had that in their previous version. It seems to be over now. :( Well follow my link in earlier post then, should be allright. :)]

Tomb Raider Master
14-01-06, 23:53
OK, I came up to this point:

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a244/SZM/C-Media.jpg

There are only 1st and 5th options available to download. Should I download these?

Joseph
15-01-06, 00:14
Where is that from? :)

[Edit: i see. C-media changed their download files. Hang on.]

Tomb Raider Master
15-01-06, 00:17
It's from HERE (http://www.cmedia.com.tw/download/e_UDA039_02.htm). :wve:

Joseph

Please download Everest Home Edition (http://www.jozefdekkers.nl/everesthome200.zip) to your desktop. Extract to new folder you named "EverestHome". Open the folder, doubleclick the setup.exe to install the program and execute a report. In the left window pane, you will see in the rootstructure: "Devices" Click on the + next it, then on "Physical Devices", to see the details in the pane at the right.
Could you post the complete list from the right pane?

Joseph
15-01-06, 00:41
I edited my last post.

Tomb Raider Master
15-01-06, 09:02
Of course, but some parts are in Croatian. Is that OK?

Joseph
15-01-06, 10:45
No problem. The devices descriptions will be in international english i suppose. :)

Tomb Raider Master
15-01-06, 11:56
OK, here you go: :)

"C-Media CMI 8738 Audio chip"

Joseph
15-01-06, 12:52
Here is the latest driver (http://www.cmedia.com.tw/download/OS-e-cmi8738_WDM_OS.htm)for your C-Media product.

Yeah... 2002... newer not available. So: the latest. :)

Tomb Raider Master
15-01-06, 12:56
It can't open the page.

Joseph
15-01-06, 13:00
I can. :(
Just click 'cancel' to the request to install languages.

Tomb Raider Master
15-01-06, 13:03
Sorry, but I can't find what you mean. :( Can you please be a little bit more specific what to select? :)

Joseph
15-01-06, 13:07
Yes: The webpage: http://www.cmedia.com.tw/download/OS-e-cmi8738_WDM_OS.htm

Tomb Raider Master
15-01-06, 13:11
OK. ;) And now what? :o

Joseph
15-01-06, 13:12
Wait. Suddenly it appears their downloadpage does not work. Maybe they're just backing up atm.?

Tomb Raider Master
15-01-06, 13:15
I don't know. But in the meantime, check your PM please. :)

Joseph
16-01-06, 00:04
The download links on the C-Media webpage do not work.

Joseph
16-01-06, 13:32
Download CMedia CMI-8738 5.12.01.0644 Date added: 4/4/2004 from HERE (http://drivers.soft32.com/driver/download-CMedia_CMI_8738-24616.html) . :)

Tomb Raider Master
16-01-06, 13:37
OK, I have downloaded and un-zipped it. :) Is that all?

Joseph
16-01-06, 13:38
Install it.
First uninstall old drivers.

Tomb Raider Master
16-01-06, 13:46
Installed! :wve: But how to uninstall my old drivers?

Joseph
16-01-06, 14:02
You should have first uninstall the old drivers.
But OK. Do you have sound?

Tomb Raider Master
16-01-06, 14:06
Joseph:
You should have first uninstall the old drivers.
Sorry, you have edited your post when I have left to install it. :)

Joseph:
Do you have sound?
What do you mean? Of course I have.

Joseph
16-01-06, 14:38
Then all went well. It will have made Windows use the latest drivers. :)

Joseph
16-01-06, 14:40
Now reinstall Directx9.0c (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a9b6820-bfbb-4799-9908-d418cdeac197&displaylang=en).

Tomb Raider Master
16-01-06, 14:43
Done! :wve: That was fast BTW! ;)

Joseph
16-01-06, 14:51
What was fast?

Tomb Raider Master
16-01-06, 14:57
Umm... The installation. Or I did something wrong again? :o

Joseph
16-01-06, 15:01
The installation of Directx9.0c went quick? Should be ok, because it will only repair or install what's missing and maybe overwrite the rest with the same data which should be quick too. All cool i think.

Now defragment your hdd.

Tomb Raider Master
16-01-06, 15:06
OK. :) It will take a while.

Joseph
16-01-06, 15:08
Why? If you do that on a regulary basis, it would take no more than a few minutes. :)

Tomb Raider Master
16-01-06, 15:12
And how to do that?

Joseph
16-01-06, 15:16
How to do what? Please could you start to be more clear with your questions? ;)
Because your first reply was
OK. :) It will take a while.
i assume you know how to defragment your hdd?

Tomb Raider Master
16-01-06, 15:20
Of course I know. :p But you said something about 'regulary basis'. What do you mean by that? :)

Joseph
16-01-06, 15:28
By that i mean: do it ofter than once in 2 years (as many do! :hea: ).

I do it more than once a day. Because i always want the hdd be in best condition. Bad fragmented hdd can be cause of many malfunctions! Also, the defragmenter could notice data corruption and suggest you to use checkdisk. BTW: now that's an excellent idea:

Click Start > Run.... type in:
chkdsk /f
Click OK. In the upcoming prompt, answer with Y.
Reboot the PC.

Tomb Raider Master
16-01-06, 15:36
Finished! :wve:

Joseph
16-01-06, 15:38
*sigh* Finished what? Defrag or checkdisk?

Tomb Raider Master
16-01-06, 15:42
Checkdisk (sorry :o). :D
It's defragmenting right now. :wve: But it's still slow.

Joseph
16-01-06, 15:55
Ah ok. It is 'slow' (having a very tough job right now) because the last time you did it wasn't yesterday was it? ;)

Tomb Raider Master
16-01-06, 15:56
You read me like a book... :o :p

Tomb Raider Master
16-01-06, 16:00
Ah, it's done (defragmentation). :wve:

Joseph
16-01-06, 16:04
Very well! Congratulations! :tmb:

Now let's see if your Windows Movie Maker has recovered from its illness. :)

Tomb Raider Master
16-01-06, 16:06
Jeez, I totally forgot about it! :o :p Yeah, everything is working perfectly! :tmb: Thank you!

Joseph
16-01-06, 16:07
So your problem is solved then? :) :D

Tomb Raider Master
16-01-06, 16:08
Yes! :jmp:

Joseph
16-01-06, 16:10
 Well done Tomb Raider Master! :tmb:

Tomb Raider Master
16-01-06, 16:12
Well done you! :tmb: This was an unforgettable hi-tech mission for me! :D :p
