hey guys....its opinion time again...

simon west did an amazing job on TR....personally although i love COL, i prefer simon wests film to jan debonts...

ANYDAY.....

west did a WAY better job at capturing the TR feel.....debont likes to think his action scenes are amazing but west could give him a run for his money anyday.....all debont likes are gun fights...at least simon varied it up a little bit more...

what do u guys think?

debont > http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/violent.gif < west

West's TR has some great scenes like the ones in the temple, the attack in Lara's home, Venice (except that cheesy shot with the menacing sky) or the final scene with this amazing set and the fight (but not the barefoot skying).

I like the sceneries in De Bont's TR, some shots are just stunning (Africa...), they give a real sense of travel and adventure. The movie looks great but there are some cheesy moments like the shark fighting for exple.

Both did so many mistakes imo that I find it really hard to choose between the two of them. :D
Hmmm, well...OK I agree with you tombraider0616, I think the first one's better.

I haven't seen many of either film amker... that I'm aware of. I liked the feel of TR1 better, Lara did all her tricks, like the roll and turn around, and the swan dive and everything. I'll have to say West this time...

I think that West had a great idea for the movies...

Unfortuantly, the test audience they showed it to ripped it apart and we got what we saw in theatres..

i think that there's more drama in the first movie.

sorry for late reply...but not sorry for saying my imagination and I enjoyed TRI. As far as TR2 is (was) concerned - I enjoyed it for some great on site scenery and stunts (as in winged flying) , but I did walk away thinking Debont forgot the stunts and scenery were supposed to complement the actor (Croft,Jolie - who the audience came to see), not the other way around. Jolie came through overall well, but there were parts "Croft" could have been allowed to be depicted on a more visceral level.
With better "vision" (screenwriting/directing and perhaps as needed, revisions after screen testing) Tomb Raider with Angelina Jolie can still be a big time successful franchise. ..and then some.
An imagination can run wild with ideas . And that could leave open doors to the future... http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I think West had a better idea of what the TR games are about but I think DeBont had a better idea of what sells movies.... COL had much better action scenes than the first movie.

Hmm, pausing for thought... I didn't like either movie particularly, but I do think that West did a better job with the visual stuff. The first film was, beautiful, in lack of a better word. Personally, I think it's sad the rest of the parts in the puzzle wasn't as finely crafted.

I just saw COL today, I loved it! I like it better than the first one, so Debont.

I think that West did a great job and I think that that is why the second movie didn't do as well, because he wasn't the director. I like some of the second movie, but it wasn't as true to the game that the movies are suppose tobe based on and was a bit disappointed because it wasn't.
So West all the way!!!!

I REEEEALLY didn`t like the TR1 plot involving Lara`s father, so my vote goes to De Bont!
There really was no need to kill the game-plot by having Laras parents dead. Just a lame excuse to put a famous actor in the part of Laras father...

Also, I thought TR2 Lara was more of the Lara from the games. TR2 had cooler sets and better locations, allthough I have no complaints about Cambodia.

The stone monkeys/Shadow Guardians should not have been in the movies! Stupid CGI...

I agree Thorir, I don't like staute things in TR1. It looked like you could poke them and they'll crumble into a million pieces.

I believe ancient ruins tend to crumble... What might one otherwise propose for these sequences??? I'm interested...

West absolutely! I just think that he knew what LAra was about more than Jan De Bon. I remember seeing House on Haunted Hill (directed by Jan debon) and it was visually stunning- he did not make COL as visually appealing in my opinion it was all about the stunts- not the art or the scene of the beauty captured in it. I felt that Simon had amazing camera work and he worked hard to have every scene look good for Lara as a character. IMO I believe that debon tried to make Lara become more 'human' in making her seem not as strong or as distinct as she was in the first one. The music for COL was not at all like TR1 and I loved the music for TR1. It was as though Jan wanted ALL his action sequences played to some intramental stuff that sounded more like a James Bond movie than a Lara Croft one.

Well CJ, the statues are trying to kill everyone. How can they look dangerous if they fall apart so easily? Or course they have to crumble when they're defeated, but I thought they seemed really easy to destroy. Maybe it was just me.

Well, West all the way.. I didnt like the way Bont directed the movie.. and also the plto and the script for TR2 was kind of borring...

I agree with Rouge exspecially the music part. I loved the music in the first one, hated the second, to heavy metal for me. If they could take good qualitys from both movies, they would come up with a perfect movie.

De Bont for me. TR2 felt so much more adventuruous and had the most amazing musical score ever (Lara's theme sounds spectacular). http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
