If you have XP, I suggest trying installing VDMSound and using Bokkie's Advanced Installer for TR1. You can download VDMS from HERE (http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound/). Have a look in THIS THREAD (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=000426#000000) for instructions on downloading and using the Advanced Installer along with VDMSound.

To avoid making another thread... same situation, only I'm using Win98SE. I'm using an onboard soundcard, though I've experimented a bit with PCAUDIO {an utility that supposedly makes it work with DOS}, without success; the FMVs play well enough, sound and all, but as soon as I start playing, the sound dies altogether, and to add insult to injury, when I return to the title screen, the game hangs. A clue to what might be wrong is that, while the title screen chokes, the CD is constantly running.

Any helpful advice to share?

Regards,

Quinch

Hi Quinch, welcome to the forum http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

What kind of sound card do you have (model/manufacturer)?

What kind of sound card do you have (model/manufacturer)?Thanks for the welcome. Anyway, turns out the driver problem was a false alarm; apparently TR interfered with my system mixer and muted all sound when I pressed the forward key. I got around that easily enough by turning off the hotkeys - I would have noticed it in the very beginning, but I'm still facing the problem of title screen lockups. It's not a massive problem, as I can force-close the game, but it gets annoying sometimes. I think it might be a problem with the game trying to read the CD, though - I could try copying the CD contents on my hard drive, but I don't know where the game stores the location of the files.

I think I've read all the posts about this problem and nothings working. I apologize in advance if this is a repetetive post.
I am trying to load TR1, put out by CORE onto a Compaq Armada m700. The laptop still has original parts so I think the sound card is a crystal brand. My issue isn't sound yet, my issue is getting things to run. I used the installer and got an install but at the end, I do not see where it makes a pif file. I have gone to the tombraid.exe and right clicked to use the vms sound. What happens is that it starts but just freezes on a black screne. It doesn't seem to use the cd drive either. I have also tried moving all of the game files to my hard drive and that didn't seem to work either. Any other suggestions to get past this?

With Gratitude,
Guitar Kitty

Guitar KittyHi Guitar Kitty - and welcome - from one newbie to another ;)
Try dowloading Glidos - I found TR wouldn't work for me without it ( don't remember the URL sorry) - just search on the net - it will also give directions how to get and use VDms - good luck!

I'm not sure about the pic, a gf recently bought the game and said her laptap practically took off like a rocket when she tried to install it...??! It made a hell of a racket in the CD-Rom drive and the laptop was vibrating very violently!
Maybe update graphics driver?
