View Full Version : AOD - DirectX?
Hello my dears :wve:
Yes, it is me again, Miss Config, the genius (@ Net & Joseph::ton: ).
I have decidid to give AOD another try and vividly remember the trouble I had installing it the first time round on my old PC.
I have read THIS (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/faq/tr6.html), but for me (:o ) some questions still remain open.
So I thought it might be a good idea to ask before I get started:
I do not know if I have DirectX installed - how do I find out?
In which order do I use the Patches and TRAOD Startup Configuration Utility?
In case I do have to download DirectX, is THIS (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx?url=/windows/directx/downloads/default.htm) the latest version? Thanks for any help. It is - as always - very much appreciated.

Hi Gabi,
Go Start > Run and type dxdiag.exe
It will tell you on the first tab what version you have.
Install v42 then v49 - Don't install v52. Patches are HERE (http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/tng/updates.html)
You can use that link if you don't have the 9.0c, but it is better to download the full version from HERE (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9226a611-62fe-4f61-aba1-914185249413&displaylang=en&Hash=CBCRHVD)and keep it on your drive in case you wish to refresh the software.

no problem :wve:
:o  :o  :o
Ermmmmm....................I have now installed AOD, downloaded and installed the patches (42 & 49) and downloaded the TRAOD Startup Configuration Utility.
Now what do I do with it? Just run it? And if so, what exactly does it do? Configure AOD for me?
Sorry :(
The SCU is this (http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/tng/aod_scu.html):
Just doubleclick on the downloaded traodscu101f.exe icon to install it.
Thanks Joseph :wve:
I've started to play AOD again, thought I should give it another go, but so far I am not too keen on the controls this time round either. Maybe I get used to them later in the game.
It is amazing, though, what a difference it makes to play the game on my "new" PC. Graphics and sound are just awesome.
Thanks again

I would say that you should leave the SCU alone until after playing the game. You can then use the SCU to turn on some of the additional options and explore hidden areas.
It is amazing, though, what a difference it makes to play the game on my "new" PC. Graphics and sound are just awesome.
Thanks again :hug:Yes. You see what on your old pc you've been missing on those parts (graphics and sound)! :tmb: I'm so happy for you that you're enjoying the games the way they were meant to be experienced.
Thanks for being so patient and for your good advice, Sim amd Joseph :wve:
Another AOD-related question: Each time I exit the game my desktop is much lighter (brighter?) and I have to access the ATI control centre in order to change it. The strange thing is, that the settings there are still the same and don't need changing. As soon as I access the control centre, the desktop goes back to its "normal" brightness.
What causes it, and what can I possibly do about it?
Thank you.
Hi Gabi. What you notice is what i notice too. As you, i have a ATI card and use the latest Catalyst drivers.
I have extended desktop (ED: 2 monitors connected to the same card, and telling Windows to not display my desktop twice, but extend it onto the second). Before playing a heavy Directx9 game (like NFSMW or FEAR), i disable the ED (the second monitor). OK.
Now, when after playing the game i re-enable the second monitor, it starts working but it is flickering like it is only 60Hertz... but looking in the settings tells that it is still at 85 Hz (but which it clearly isn't, it's flickering and smaller than it should be)! Only a reboot with ED (second monitor) enabled, corrects this.
What you describe i saw happening sometimes too: only played using 1 monitor, after exit game the monitor looked brighter but it corrects itself always within a few seconds while i watch.
Most of the times this does not happen though.
This must be a tiny glitch in the ATI drivers, i have no other explanation.
:wve: Thanks Joseph
I guess I'll have to live with it then  .
Gabi :wve: It is time to update your ATI drivers to Catalyst 6.3 (https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&questionID=640). Problem probably solved.

Thanks Joseph :wve:
Are you sure you really want me to have a go at this? You can't say that you don't know what I am like when it comes to the tech. side. So you also know what you let yourself into :p . You have been warned :mis: !
For starters: The website says to make sure to have Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1 or 2.0.
I have no idea if I have got it. How can I find out?
Next question: On the website it also says:
The Catalyst Uninstaller (http://support.ati.com/ics/support/DLRedirect.asp?fileIDExt=050553d40196ef109fff37cbb 40aaf28&accountID=737&deptID=894) is an optional download. We recommend using this utility to uninstall any previously installed Catalyst drivers prior to installation.Do I have any, how do I find out?
Enough for the moment. I'm sure I will be back with more questions later :o .
Yes don't you remember, Gabi? You have Microsoft Net Framework installed. Otherwise you could not have the ATI Controlpanel working. And you already have the CAt.uninstall, or download again. It's the easiest and 100% effective method of uninstalling ATI drivers.
Hang on.
[Edit: nevermind, i was searching for the the thread where we installed the Net Framework and the then newest Catalyst, but couldn't find it. I'll tell you what to do in next post.]
Download ATI Catalyst 6.3 (https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&questionID=640) (the full package containing drivers and Ati Control Panel) to a downloadfolder on your PC. Remember where you have that folder.
Download the Catalyst Uninstaller (http://support.ati.com/ics/support/DLRedirect.asp?fileIDExt=050553d40196ef109fff37cbb 40aaf28&accountID=737&deptID=894) to the same folder.
Doubleclick cat.uninst.exe. Confirm that you want to remove all ATI related drivers and files. Wait till its finished and prompts to reboot.
Reboot. The desktop looks ugly now. Navigate to the downloadfolder. Rightclick on the downloaded Catalyst file, called 6-3_xp-2k_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_30895.exe, select > Properties. Read at the bottom the safety measure. Hit the button to lift the blockade. Click OK.http://www.jozefdekkers.nl/Trforum/atidrivers-liftblockade.gif
Doubleclick the Catalyst file and watch the drivers and the new ATI Controlpanel installing itself.
Reboot the pc.
Defragment your C:\ harddiskdrive
Done! :tmb:
You make it look quite easy :D .
I'll give that a go tomorrow.
Atm I am more worried about my sound, please have a look at the other thread about the voice conversation.
Gabi it IS very easy. Just follow all steps, and don't forget to lift the blockade as shown with the picture. See you tomorrow.
Sorry Joseph, have not got around to do any of it tonight. ( visitors who did not know when to go home................ ).
I'll try tomorrow. The same goes for my microphone.
See you then :wve:
( visitors who did not know when to go home................ ).
Did you try: "Go away now"? :D
Sorry. :o
