View Full Version : The official "Vote for your favourite level" poll

Might as well have one, seeing how a new thread gets started on the subject about once a month.

You can add fresh discussion if you want, not that most of you won't have already deliberated over this particular subject several times before.

Btw - High performing levels (i.e, those that gain lots of votes) from each TR game will go forward to the General Chat Grand Final, to be held either later this year or early next year. The purpose of this final round will be to once and for all find TRF's most popular Tomb Raider level. And yes, the "Legend" levels will eventually be included in the polls, as will the Unfinished Business, Gold, Lost Artifact levels at some point.

The TR2 poll will go up on May 15th. On the same day, the TR1 poll will close.

ONE vote per member.

Sanctuary of the Scion

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v602/jpmd152k/sanctuary05.jpg

My favourite level will have to be Sanctuary of the Scion. I think the level has such an atmospheric feeling to it, and it stands out in the game as a whole (you can't just get it mixed up with another level, surely!).

I think it is an excellent level incorporating all elements of gameplay, with exploring, climbing, collecting, fighting with the findings of ancient artefacts like the Scion, Ankh's and Scarabs and gold keys.

I also like the enemies in Sanctuary of the Scion, all of which are atlantean mutants inluding all types - walking, flying and centaurs. I also like the 3 battles with the centaurs and other atlantean creatues on top of those really high ledges.

The level has an invisible ledge with the Uzis, which if you played fairly you can find the Uzis here to kill those flying atlanteans! Also at the end of the level is the final showdown with Larsen which was cool as well.

The level is no more than an hour long if played properly. I found it quite challenging but also very enchanting as well, with those huge rooms, statues of Anubis and the legendary Sphinx.

The design is very beautiful as well, with a mixture of sand, rocks and pools to decorated walls with mummies and tombs also not forgetting the lovely entrance to this level as well.

A very egypty level with excellent combat, puzzles, traps and lovely pools with water you can really feel refreshed swimming in! I just absolutely love this level!

TOMB OF QUALPEC

This level is my favourite because, its the wierdest TOMB ever. useally its a cave, dry normally empty. Just look at the texture on the walls, the color, never seen levers in a tomb either, just watching out for cave-ins little things that lurk around.

To me, Palace Midas encompasses what the first TR is all about. It’s a beautiful level, intertwining upon itself, giving the user completely different vantage points of the same area at different stages of the level. It’s genius.

Palace Midas guides the player through so many environments: rocky crevices, beautiful ancient ruins and the wonderful garden. The enemies are well placed, requiring skill on the part of the user to defeat them. There are places to climb upon to dispatch a couple but for the most part you’re left on fair ground with only strategy to protect you. Three of the enemies produce big scares such as the gorilla at the top of the spike room, the crocodile around the first corner and I felt a moment of sheer panic when trapped on a ledge (above the pool where we enter the level) staring down the throat of a lion running right for me.

The level is initially disorienting. It takes a while to decide which course of action to take first as it is the least linear of the game. It can take a long time to explore fully and at least a solid hour minimum play time can be expected for the first time around. It mixes easy with hard. Easier jump puzzles like the spike room are balanced with the massive hunt for the third lead bar which will take Lara to the top of the gorgeous aqueduct. Let’s not forget to mention the fire jump sequence which is tricky for almost all users and I’ve heard several claim it to be the hardest puzzle in the game.

The garden features one of the adventure’s cleverest secrets with a superbly hidden switch and the only double set of chomping blades you‘ll see. The entrance to the Midas room queues my favorite music of the first Tomb Raider and the Midas touch is the best death in any Croft adventure, much less the first installment. That unreachable health pack is pretty cool, too.

Simply put, a brilliant level and the best of the game.

It was hard to choose. I like the cistern, since you can flood the whole place. I like atlantis and too, for it's traps. I like traps.
Also Caves is very good, it really has a good atmosphere.
And I like Sanctuary of the Scion, but I voted
PALACE MIDAS
because you can do it in diffrent orders. It also has the tomb-feeling. THere are underwater passages and there are many enemies. Good traps and of course the HAND OF MIDAS. I always love it to turn myself into gold, lol.

It's amazing how spread out the votes are so far.

- 12 of the 15 levels have picked up at least 1 vote
- There is no 'runaway' leader. Palace Midas leads the way despite having only secured 8 of the 39 votes.

it was a difficult choice, but my vote goes to
ATLANTIS
atlantis was a very different and uniquely imaginative level. it had great level design, with its fleshy, pulsating walls, passages and bridges and mutant pods.
it was very scary, with its heartbeat-like music the constant fear of when a mutant pod was going to explode because they released the most ferocious mutants, in large numbers(and this is a weird reason for me to like this level because i'm not too fond of those creatures....).
also, it was very long and difficult with many puzzles and traps. since i played it on the playstation, with the save crystal system, the level of difficulty was further increased.
and of course, who can forget the one and only bacon lara, dear old bacon lara. that was one of the most fun parts of the level and it was very amazing. i was pleasantly surprised to realize that the room itself was 'mirrored' so that whatever lara did, bacon lara did. oh, the memories of running into bacon lara and hearing lara say "AGGHH!!!".
one of the most different and imaginative tomb raider levels, atlantis was amazing......

though, i really liked many of the other levels too, so this was a very difficult choice.:)

I must admit, of all the games (even the golds!) my favorite is still St. Francis' Folly! I will never forget thte first time I (Lara, really) walked to the edge of the multi-level room and peered over the edge! WHOA!!! A dropped flare dissapperaded! I knew this level was going to be awesome! Couple that with one of the hardest secrets ever to get without plunging to your death and super cool Mythology themed tasks...sheer coolness!

Palace Midas came in second, though...

The Top Two performing levels will be going through to the Gen Chat Grand Final.

At the moment that is Lost Valley and Palace Midas, who both have 9 votes.

Atlantis is not out of it yet, being placed just behind on 7 votes.

Cistern and St Francis Folly remain outside bets on 5 votes.

City of Vilcabamba and Tomb of Tihocan both still have a pathetic 0 votes.

Its such a hard choice, i love all the levels for different reasons ( except natlas mines) St Francis Folly was great, especially when you step through that doorway at the top and try to glimps were the floor is hundreds of feet below, that bit blew me away, Palace Midas is a fave and of course the Lost Valley but for me it was the egyptian levels and of those my fave is Sanctuary of the Scion, great atomosphere, great textures scary enemies
( come on , how many of you crapped your pants the first time one of those flying demons attacks) the whole scale of the level was just awesome.

The blackness of the coal and the stark contrast of the lava pits was quite stunning.

I'd have to say Caves. It's hard to explain, but the first time I played Tomb Raider, I was kind of new to gaming, and Caves was the first level I ever played properly. I actually thought I could go and explore all the little nooks and crannies (like some of those really narrow vents in the ceilings, I spent ages trying to grasp onto them!). That Vilcabamba bear has goaded three people into voting for its level. Congrats to City of Vilcabamba, now finally making some headway.

Lost Valley has emerged as the clear frontrunner now, having notched up 17 votes.

'Back to back' levels Palace Midas and Cistern are battling it out for that crucial second place. The former has a narrow 13-12 advantage.

Atlantis (10 votes), The Great Pyramid (8), and St Francis' Folly (7), are still in with an outside chance.

I think the Khamoon section has suffered because of the fact it is one level in two parts.

Lost Valley? I definitely don’t hate this level. In fact, when I recently played through the original Tomb Raider again, this is one of about five levels that I remembered pretty clearly from 1997. However, I definitely don’t think it deserves to get the amount of votes it has right now.

It’s one of several collection levels in which Lara must gather a number of similar items to complete or advance to the next phase of the level. What I’ve seen is that other, similar stages have more to offer in terms of game play. In Lost Valley, three cogs must be collected. After a quick jaunt through, it should be very obvious where all three of them are: the building, the waterfall and the destroyed bridge. And by “quick jaunt,” I mean quick. I finished in under 11 minutes in only my third time though it.

From reading the posts by people who voted for Lost Valley, I guess the T-Rex stands as the primary reason it’s garnered the attention it has. The problem is that the designers gave us a very easy way to dispatch it. Run to the right and climb through the rock up to the high alcove where you can fight it completely out of harm’s way. Pistols then make quick work of the behemoth.

Other collection levels like St. Francis’ Folly, Palace Midas, Obelisk of Khamoon and Natla’s Mines demand more from the player which can only enhance the fun factor. I hope that each of you votes for the best level and not just a big green dinosaur.

A very good post. I'm with you about..umm...90% of the way. I think The Lost Valley is a decent level, but far inferior to many that come later in the game. Just to draw your attention to one particular thing you said....

It’s one of several collection levels in which Lara must gather a number of similar items to complete or advance to the next phase of the level.

This 'four keys to one door' concept really started to bug me by the time I finished TRLR. Hell, it annoyed me so much in AOD-Hall of Seasons I made a thread about it. However, in the case of The Lost Valley I think you have to offer an exemption when it comes to criticism. This was the first time in the series we had to do a puzzle like this. It was still original back in TR1. Hell, not until TRLR did I start to think it was being over-used.

Cistern mixes things up a lot better by confusing you with the order you have to get the keys for the varying doors. This sort of thing really appeals to me. Hell, I didn't vote for Cistern but if it comes first or second I'll probably think that was a good choice for the members to make.

What I really don't like more than anything is the Fire/Wind/Ice/Tornado multiple door thing that popped up in TR3 and AOD. It takes a bit of the exploration factor out of the equation for me. Such an assignment is a commitment to spending hours on four sub-tasks without much chance for exploring or killing. It was fine up until about the end of TR3. After that, I hoped I wouldn't come across it so much.

Just to add, this poll surprises me every single day I check it. Never in a zillion light years would I have expected The Lost Valley to romp past Palace Midas, or for someone to get drunk and vote The Tomb of Tichocan (And thanks to the wonders of I.P tracking, we know who you are!).

The Lost Valley has gone 6 votes clear of the rest of the pack. Barring a miracle it will be in the final.

The race for the second qualifying spot is intensifying, with Palace Midas (14), Cistern (13), and Atlantis (13) all slugging it out furiously.

The Great Pyramid and St Francis' Folly (10 each) still have an outside chance.

All the other levels are probably as dead and buried as King Qualopec right now.

Tomb of Tihocan and Obelisk of Khamoon (2 each) seem to be fighting it out for the wooden Spoon.

Lost Valley - 22
Palace Midas - 16
----------------------------
Atlantis - 14
Cistern - 13
St Francis' Folly - 11
The Great Pyramid - 10

The Lost Valley continues to go from strength to strength, scoring regular votes every few days.

Palace Midas, in my opinion the favourite the win the TR1 poll before voting commenced, has been in the Top Two ever since the start. Its qualification for the final remains shaky however. It cannot seem to pull away from the pack.

Atlantis is coming up hard on the rails, and now has 3rd place on its own for the first time.

Cistern - Stuttering. I think Pierre's annoying appearances in this level may stop it reaching the final.

St Francis' Folly and The Great Pyramid, keep going. You still have an outside chance.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

124 votes gone. With many weeks to go between now and the closing date - May 15th, I would say we may well be halfway through the total votes at this point. I think there will be between 200-250 votes total (est). Although I find it hard to envisage a scenario where The Lost Valley crashes and burns, the race for second is still very much open. And at the end of the day, TWO levels qualify.

Natla's Mines. I love the atmosphere of that level. And I like the feeling of relief when you finally get your pistols back so you can take care of that "nuthin' personal" guy.

Or you can use the all weapons cheat and use the uzis on him. :D

I chose City Of Khamoon - I haven't played the level in years because I don't have a PS1 memory card, but that level stands out to me because its the first Egyptian level and I remember being like 'OMG YAY!' when I got there. Egyptology fascinates me =D

*double and apparantly triple posted*. Slow wireless internet

I'm going to try and make some use of this double post actually.....

As already stated, voting has slowed up considerably over the past few days. As a result, I am seriously considering letting these polls run for just 1 month instead of 2 months. Such a re-think will also enable the competition to finish before Xmas if you consider the fact we have 9 polls to get through in total (8 heats + the final).

If this TR1 poll does end after 1 month, that will mean there are 8 days left for voting. Phonelines will go dead on Sunday April 15th at whatever time I can be bothered to get out of bed to cut them off. That same day the TR2 poll will open.

If anyone objects to this minor changing of the format (you might be a Cistern fan and still think your level can catch up) then by all means post to say so. Your opinion will be taken into consideration prior to my final decision on the subject tomorow evening.

Lost Valley - 25
Palace Midas - 19
--------------------
Atlantis - 16

With just FOUR days of voting left, Atlantis is now the only level which can realistically dislodge the stubborn Palace Midas from second place. Despite The Lost Valley's emergence as the dominent force in this section, Palace Midas is the only level which has been in the Top Two from the very beginning. It has bravely fought off occasional pushes from such contenders as Cistern and Atlantis, and the bookies think it will just about complete the job and creep over the line.

(Bacon Lara's bacon would appear to be cooked in this competition, btw, with Atlantis not in a qualifying spot)

Down at the bottom, Tomb of Tihocan now occupies last spot all by itself, which just goes to show you can put the wonderful Pierre in a level and it still might turn out to be rubbish.

Yes, all the games will be involved. It's a competition to find TRF's favourite all-time TR level. 16 levels will eventually compete in the General Chat Grand Final, with 2 of those contenders coming from TR1, hence my qualifying spot terminology.

TR2 poll goes up on the 15th.

I went with ATLANTIS
Don't know why, I just could not choose!
The levels I don't like would be Palace Midas, the Cistern, and most of the Greek levels (except for St. Francis' Folly, love that place). I think I liked the Atlantean levels because of the creepy pulsating walls, eeeeewww.
Actually, I kinda wish I'd gone with Sanctuary of the Scion. Mixes the fantabulous Egypt with the spooky Atlantis mutants...
Ah well. Go Atlantis!

With two days of overtime to go, it's still up in the air as to which level will grab that second qualifying spot. Cistern in particular has emerged as a shock late candidate to go through, and St Francis' Folly isn't completely out of the running. However, Palace Midas remains in front for now. It is fair to say meanwhile that The Lost Valley has well and truly trounced the opposition in this section.
