View Full Version : St. Francis' Folly speedrun video!
I just found this speedrun video. VERY impressive! I would never have dared to play that level without saving!

Yes, I uploaded a couple of the videos from my upcoming TR1 speedrun.
The whole thing should be on speeddemosarchive within the next few months (replacing the current one).
Just looking at that I can see loads of places where time can be saved.

I've watched the whole TR1 as a speedrun :D [plus TR2 and 3 :p]

That was impressive. Come on then Neteru, lets see you beat the time :tea:
It was great watching that, i have not seen that since i played it almost ten years ago!

Where? As far as I know the only mistakes I made were getting the key in Domocles wrong and killing the Gorilla in Atlas (though that was more neccesary due to bad luck earlier).
Unless you mean killing enemies with better weapons and using medikits and glitches, in which case that isn't possible as I can't use them in the rules I am going by.
Considering working out (and executing) everything took me several hours, I don't appreciate it being dismissed in one sentence with no explanation. On the other hand, it would also be great if there really is something I'm missing, as more time cut off can only be a good thing :) .

Very impressive time, best so far in the world! :tmb: I enjoyed watching your video very much! ;)
I don't appreciate it being dismissed in one sentence with no explanation. My post isn't in the least dismissive. Sure, you've done great with it, but I think you're being a bit too sensitive. I'm simply stating what I can see (that you could shave off a bit of time here and there).
I'm not going to detail every single spot because there are a few where I thought that a corner could be cut more tighly, or a run jump there, rather than a standing jump. But one obvious example is the push block at the beginning. You wait for the camera to cut back to Lara before you push it forward. If you visualise Lara's animation in your head, you can start her pushing that block before the camera switches back. A fraction of time saved.
You've already mentioned Damocles key and Atlas gorilla.

That was absolutely amazing! Especially how he/she climbed back down the central column after collecting the keys. Damn impressive :tmb:

It's kind of difficult to be accepting of someone saying it needs loads of improvement when I beat the world record by around 19 seconds (which, from the comments I've seen on that, already awed many very good players).
I cut the camera back so quick that the difference on the block would be a few milliseconds at most.
The movements of TR mean cutting corners etc actually does very little (perhaps a couple of seconds if you are really lucky). By far the most important thing is how many jumps you can fit into your movements.
"shaving off time here and there" is quite different to saying that there are a "load" of improvements possible, and in that regard I can certainly agree, as I believe that getting below 8 minutes is very possible (albeit difficult). In fact, when the video is on SDA, this is one of the main levels I have plans to improve (mainly by cutting out the couple of mistakes I mentioned), there is some luck that may make less than 8 minutes extremely hard though; for instance, I got extremely lucky with Pierre in this run.
Nevermind though, this seems more a misunderstanding of what you meant in your first post.
Well I for one himbly bow down and accept defeat! That was frikkin' amazing! That is my absolute fav board of all the games and that was just...MMAN, I'm speechless!
I've got to stop being such a perfectionist!

i thought it was a solid run, mman, and shaving off enough time to drop your time below 8 minutes looks improbable. oh, and after watching your TR2 run the other day, i gotta give you dap for turning on the stereo during home sweet home. i was cracking up.

very impressive, he/she must of new this level very well, ofcourse if i was jumping i would splat down dead the first second im in there.
Very great. One question only:
When inserting the keys in the locks, why don't you do the first one, then sideflip to the third one, walk to the 2nd/4th one and then sideflip to the last one? I'm sure that sideflipping will be much faster then turning.
Inventory management is something to take into account; sideflipping between them would be slightly faster, but I would have to shift through the inventory for the right key (which takes a short time and is easy to mess up after a long, difficult level), while doing it in order makes it automatic, which I think makes up for the slightly slower movement between keyholes.

I thought the key you needed pulled up automatically? At any rate, it was a great run through, and thanks for sharing it with us!:)
how do you open that secret door down the bottom?

when you're facing the switch that opens the thor room, there's a pressure pad across the gap to your right. step on it and then get down as fast as you can because the door is timed.

Okay i see. I didn't know that time continued when the inventory is opened.

Watching this video i came with this doubt that struggles me since i started play TR years ago:
do we actually move faster if we jump while running?
Thanks!
:cen: Awesome!
Before I watched it I was wondering how you would manage to get passed the daggers in Damocles and manage to pass the thunder in Thor, very impressive especially with the daggers :cln:
I never knew you could outrun the boulder and get on the ledge in Atlas, I always run back to the pit and hang. :o
How come you managed to deal with Pierre so easily he always turns around and shoots at me, costing me loads of life. :hea:
You must have been practicing that level for ages, but it was well worth it, great work MMAN :tmb:
By the way what is that red 30 in the bottom left of the screen when you get the keys? Never seen that before.

absolutely. jump-running is much faster.

Yes, jumping is faster than running. I believe it's usually only slightly faster, but it really adds up over time.

Pierre was incredibly lucky in this run; he usually costs me more time (and health).
The red 30 is from the recording program I am using, it always flashes up the framerate when I access the inventory, it doesn't do anything though.

is that program fraps?
Yes. It does that in the inventory on all the first three TR games (I haven't tried it on four and five).

MMAN, Will you be doing google videos for all tomb raider levels? I saw your Caves one and that was kool, I saw the Jungle and Thames Wharf ones and they were fantastic too, but will you be doing more??
I only uploaded a couple of videos from each game and don't intend to upload more; they are mainly up as promotion for links to the whole run on Speeddemosarchive (though TR1 isn't there yet, but should be soon).

MMAN - Very impressed with Caves & St.Francis' Folly :tmb:
I've seen Caves from Google Video. Awesome job there. I can't wait till the full thing is up so, I can download and learn some more tricks ;)
Wow! Some impressive moves there, if I tried to do that I'd end up dying. Got anymore?
Wow, that's amazing MMAN! You seemed to know every single nook and cranny of St. Francis Folly - myou are a truly amazing Tomb Raider!
I would die at least a few times, and that's when I'm taking it slow and carefully...!
