Hi all :wve:

I'd love to know what pets you or your family have had in the past and/or presently along with their particular breed and the names you gave them!

My family had:

A long-haired standard Dachshund (sausage dog) named Ben.
A blue budgie named Bluey
A Zebrafinch we resued from the garden called Cocoa.
We have three cats, 2 of which were mine, Buster, Honey and Chloe.

I currently have a Sirian hamster named Ripley.
I had other cats, Teekah, Jackson and Bonnie
A German Shephard named Jinx
A Bengalese finch
Loads of hamsters over the years (too many to name)
A Zebrafinch.
Two terrapins
A tropical aquarium with some lovely fish.

I think that's it!!

Awww tlr what a beautiful cat. Looks like one I had called Honey (the first one I named Honey). She was lost sadly and I see her little face in a thousand other cats I see.

She used to sit on my shoulder, even when I was ironing, mad cat :D

26-03-06, 22:43
Awww Elen how lovely. I do prefer cats to dogs as far as them making nice pets. They pretty much look after themselves and are no trouble and extremely cute.

The only thing that bothers me is if they come onto the bed in the middle of the night and start grooming and scratching, waking me up with their collar bells and the general picking and licking sounds lol.

Mum's cat Buster is so noisey in that respect. The last time I was staying he had scoffed the food we put out for the hedgehog (cat food) as well as his own and he then proceeded to throw up right by my bed :D

We've had an entire menagerie of pets... here's all the ones I can remember:

1 cat, no idea what her "real" name was, but I called her Pookie. Dark brown tortoiseshell with two white paws and a wonderfully friendly disposition. Died on a Friday 13th of old age (she was nearly 21). I still miss her. :(

4 rats. The two males, our first pair, were Charlie (albino) and Martin (greyish brown sewer-rat-style), then two females, Monty (black & white hooded) and Chip (grey and white capped), who were, incidentally, named before we discovered they weren't males.

4 guinea pigs. Patch (tortoiseshell and white, really fat pig too) and Clara (all black), Shadow (black with flecks of brown, she died within a week tho), Dandelion (mad-spiky tortoiseshell and white, she ran away one day when my sister didn't lock the hutch properly, we never found her)

1 hamster. Hampy Hammy Humbug Tinkerbell Callaghan. He was just called Humbug in every-day life though. :D Black and white hooded colour, very active beast for most of his life.

1 rabbit. Albino. Rescued from our cousins who couldn't take care of him because he only had three and a half legs so he couldn't exercise much (his mum bit off one of his legs when he was newly born because she got a fright; rabbits often do that). He looked after the guinea pigs he shared a hutch with, even scaring cats away from the side of the pen when they got too close, and hiding the pigs from view. :D Never liked being handled though, had a good kick for a lame rabbit.

We currently have...

3 guinea pigs. All female. Buffy (black and brown, has an extra toe on one of her hindpaws), Fudge (brown with flecks of black) and Speckle (white, with a brown/black-flecked cap, and a crest). But I never remember the name of the one I'm pointing at so I just say "the black one" or "the white one" or "the brown one". That annoys my sister. XD

McJ: Madeline is so cute! I want to see more pics of her, you only ever post the front-on staring-at-you pic. :D

Smith: My rats were all like that, except they ate meat too. I'd feed them my leftovers after dinner. When they were sick I even made them lentil soup. ^_^ In the end they just got picky though, they wouldn't eat apples or carrots and demanded cooked food. >_>

and my brother's cat, Nabiša (it isn't her best pic, she's a tub of lard XD):
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/1583/nabia3uk.jpg

and my dear dog, I had to give him away about 5 to 6 years ago but I still miss him so much, he was the craziest and most lovable dog ever, I miss him way too much, I almost start crying jut thinking about it. Anyway, here's some of his pics, he's the cutest thing ever :D :

Here comes the Zoo.

5 Dogs which are Terrier Cross. Buddy looks a lot like them except for the colour. They are Daddy - Tramp, Mummy - Munchie, Uncle Petey, Children Fat Boy and Miss Piggy.

2 Cats Female Smokey and Male Socks.

Now for the birds. These are just the ones with names

2 cockatoos boy Sammy and girl Charlie. Galah's Billy, Pinky and Tweety Pie, cockatiel Spike. Conures 2 Sun Conures Devil Child and Willy (as in 1 eye Willie), when the people were hand raising him he fell off the table and injured his eye and is blind in that eye. Jenday Conure Tishy and Nanday Conure Zorro. Scaley Breasted Lorikeet called Laurel. Alexandrine called Baby Bird. Corella named Kaspar. That's the ones with names.

I also have another 5 Galah's, 4 Alexandrines, 10 Indian Ringnecks, about 30 Lorikeets (Rainbow and Scaley), 30 cockatiel's, 1 Corella, 2 Major Mitchell cockatoos, 6 princess parrots, 1 chook, 1 pigeon and about 14 budgies, 6 of which I bought yesterday. We had a show and auction yesterday and I won Best Novice cock any age and Best Pied Hen any age, in the show. In the auction I bought 3 males and 3 females. The really good male I ended up paying $260 for. Expensive for me but he is a knockout. Another male of the same variety (Opaline Grey) went for $1100 and most people said the one I bought was the better bird. He is one of the main birds that will breed some champion birds for me.

One of our cats at home has just been into the vet. Dad saw him with his mouth wedged open, choking. He had lost a tooth and it had got stuck the poor thing. He had to have them removed and he only has two left now so has to eat only soft cat meat and not biscuits for breakfast.

One of the other cat's Chloe is so funny. I left my holdall full of clothes on my mum and dad's bed at Christmas and come dinner time there was no sign of Chloe. Then I went to the bedroom and saw a little pair of beady eyes staring out from my holdall :vlol:

She goes in all manner of boxes, mum's kitting rack, in the washing machine - so cute!

Not easy at times especially when you consider I hand raised most of them. The largest number I hand raised at one time was 84 birds. 42 of those were Cockatiels but they ranged from budgies to Major Mitchells. I never want to do that many ever again.

Many of them are in aviaries. I feed and water around 3 times per week. The biggest problem I have is playing with all the pets. Charlie probably gets the most attention as she is the sweetest girl ever. She just loves getting cuddles and usually gives me big kisses. She is a very big girl, she and Sammy are nearly 2ft tall. The Greater Sulfur Crested Cockatoo's are very big birds. They are brother and sister and I hand raised them 4 1/2 years ago from 2 weeks of age.

Tweety is the newest member of the family. I bred her and her sister in October and hand raised them. Her sister I sold and kept Tweety. She is really starting to talk now and is a very cheeky little girl.

Getting them ready for Bird Shows is the biggest job as I have to get all the cages ready first. I usually only take about 6 birds as that is all I can fit in the car.

Awww yes thanks. He was a stray that turned up fussing over my father in his shed. Dad let him live with them but the moment he moved in he rewrote the rulebook :vlol: He started going on the kitchen worksurface and he peed in the toaster!!!! Eeek! He lives with 2 queens so he gets territorial and used to spray but we feed him outside now as this seemed to be his way of protecting his grub!!

Then he was run over and had to have his legs pinned with a steel rod, now his teeth are falling out! He can be a very viscious cat, we think he was mistreated. He isn't all there if you see what I mean. He often goes into a trance for ages with his leg in the air, forgetting he was having a wash :D

It is very sad when a pet dies.

Sorry to hear of this both.

Our Dachshund died whilst I was living it up in town with my ex husband. I made a call to wish them a Happy New Year and my father said nothing on the phone to me. When I saw them next mum told me Ben had become very ill and is mouth/tongue turned blue. He had a heat attack.

Dad has a hearing problem and didn't hear the vet say he was going to be put to sleep so he just nodded. Then they came back out and gave dad the now deceased dog. Apparently my father was distraught because he hadn't said goodbye. The dog was 15 and had a good life but my father still misses him. He is buried in the family garden now along with one of the cats who was killed just outside on th road - it's such a quiet area in the country so very sad that the cat was run down.

It's awful when pets die. People don't realise just how attached pet owners are to their animals :(

I've had a few pets die... and it hurts. I get more attached to pets than to people sometimes. I never cry in front of other people, don't ask why, it's a little thing of mine. Having to give away my dog made me cry the entire day in school. I still love him to death :(

Bobby Trendy! That's the one!! :vlol: He so camped it up on the show but Anna was so spaced out half the time I am surprised they managed to get any episodes filmed!

One minute she was having to be sedated to go to the dentist and the next she was having her belly button pierced. Ooooh I couldn't bear to have that done - give me the dentist any day! Yeah she also had a dog therapist and she was about as useful as a pork chop at a Jewish wedding - no use at all :D

I had my belly button pierced. OW! I had to take it out. Wasn't even worth the INFECTION. Anyhow, yeah bobby trendy was...perhaps the worst interior designer I've EVER seen. Looked like a blind hooker dressed her room. And yeah, she was worthless and stupid. But classic (and classless) nonetheless. You just cannot write that. :D

I feel so sorry for you MiCkiZ88! I'd feel terrible if someone did that to my cats, I think I'd try to take revenge in some way if I knew who it was. I remember that when I was a kid, there was a girl in our village who had cancer and some jerk who lived near her poisoned her cat too because he kept pigeons and he was afraid the cat would eat them. A sick girl's cat! Some people are just horrible :(

The name of the cat in my avatar is Sokje (which is Dutch for little sock, he's brown with white socks) and my other cat's name is Bepje (just a name I picked up somewhere :) ). We also had a three-colour cat (what's the word for that again) named Annie and an all-brown one named Suske (after a famous Belgian comic book character), but they both died :( I'll post some pictures if you like...

Oh dear someone poisoned your cat Micki? Was it deliberate or an accident? It's awful that this happend. Not everyone likes cats and yet we as 'owners' have no power to control where they go when outside.

Slug pellets are highly poisonous to cats along with other things. The best way to deter cats from digging up the garden is by the use of mothballs - cats hate the smell of mothballs.

I'd be devastated if anyone poisoned my cats, accidentally or otherwise :(

Aah you guys have cute cats! ^_^

I have little birds (putters and sijsjes) raised when they just came out, found them in the garden of my neighbour.

@ JACOBryanBURNS:

We adopted Jasper from a person who was temporally living across the road from us. He didn't have the time etc to care for him properly, and as a result Jasper's fur was in a terrible state - thickly matted and filthy with you can imagine. The cat was ok, but could hardly move his fur was so bad.

As soon as we had him signed over we took him to our local vets. They cleaned and shaved him, gave him worming and flea treatments; and since then (early Febraury) he has thrived.

Jasper is now a real character; he is talkative, affectionate and very playful (not to mention a mischeivous little so-and-so at times ;)). He can groom himself properly and has had a whole new lease of life. His story had touched many hearts, and I'm glad to say he is now one happy cat :D

With my little list I didn't think it would be appropriate to post photos of all of them. It would also take me about 1 whole day to resize them.

Beautiful horse. I have two cats. Tawnie is a 10 year old female golden-eyed orange tabby. She is insane. And a 15-16 (we're not really sure) year old female Calico named Samantha or Sam for short.

Thanks! He is a tourney jumper who's tried to kill me
many times. I still love him though. Baddest horse
I ever met.

Airwave - a beaty of a beast if ever I saw one. Did you have to break him in? Why is he so badly behaved? :(

Airave I miss my horses too. My first horse was Trixie. She was a total ***** and was forever taking off on me. I was only about 7 then. My second horse was Fella. He was a Whaler not an Australian Stockhorse. The Whaler was bred from a Light Draught Horse, Arab and Thoroughbred. Best horse in the world. They can go all day without a break. Great temperament. They make great Polo horses as they have really strong hind quarters. Good for the quick turns.

My third was a little Paloose Filly. She had only been broken about 6 weeks when I got her. I kept her for just over 12 months. Fed her up to fill her out and trained her. She was a lovely Liver Roan. When I sold her she looked really lovely. She was a very easy horse to train, so willing to learn. I had another horse on loan. He was a Square Leg Pacer called Sam.

God I miss riding.

Sugerpie, I saved him actually.
He has great blood-lines
and potential, but ended up
in bad hands... They messed him
up pretty bad trying to make him a
"winner" I took him over and tried
my best, with lots of love and attention,
to make him a happy horse.
At that I did succeed- at much cost
to myself (finacially and health-wise),
but he is living a good life now.

Well done Airwave, hopfully he has learnt how to trust again

I like to see animals taken from bad homes and rehabiliated. Animal cruelty can reach apalling levels :(

Hugs! I only gave up riding to support and afford
(time, energy, health and finacially- wise) my daughter!

But I sure do miss my Horses and riding!

Not that my 2 y/o Lara isn't worth it!

Still, I have my moments...

I did my best to get him to trust people (especially men) again.
Took lots of work though. He was expected to be a champion
and was subjected to much stress...

He could do it when he wanted to, but wouldn't be forced.
He was tortured for that. I gave him love and understanding.
At a much later time.

If I ever see his last trainer on fire...
I won't **** on him to put it out...

He is happy and without stress these days
living a good horse life!!!!:)

My Fella had a similar problem. He didn't like getting up early in the morning and they used him as a stock horse herding sheep and cattle. He was also a grey and used to love to roll after he had been hosed. Were he came from they had red soil. Apparently they were preparing him for a show and bathed him and he rolled and instead of being grey he ended up red. They beat him over the head with the hose. We even figured out it was a red hose. He would walk over a green or black hose but if he saw a red hose he went nuts.

It took me 6 months to be able to touch his ears without him throwing his head around.

He eventually came good. I could never hose him easily but he had such a loving gentle temperament that he was never nasty. I tought about 8 kids to ride on him and he was still being used to teach kids to ride when he was well into his 30's. He live to be 42 years old and was much loved by the lady who bought him. She and her husband became my friends. She was a A grade Dressage Teacher and was really good with horses.

Fella never kicked or bit, my 2 year old cousin sometimes would walk under his belly and pull his tail and he would just stand there and look down at her. He was a beautiful boy.

Currently:
*Oreo - A grey and tan kitty, she looked black and white when we named her, though.
*Peaches - A sweet old tan cat who is older than my younger brother. She's 7 years old.
*El Tigre - Basically, he looks like miniature Tiger. He acts like king of the house, too.
*Lucky - He was born backwards, I helped him come out safely. So I named him Lucky.
*Spanky - This sweet Kitty gets into trouble without even trying. Here's a picture of him: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/29212207/ He's almost an exact twin of Lucky.

Pets in the past:
*Escapé - A crawfish that we found in our yard and brought inside as a pet for about 7 months till we let him back outside.
*Neo - Average Black & White cat. I took care of Neo from only a few weeks old to almost a year old. Here is a picture of him when he was a kitten: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/29176519/
*Snowball - A fairly large white, short haired dog. She arrived when it was snowing outside.
*Shekels - A white cat with three brown spots, a striped tail and brown ears. She acted like a snobby cat all the time.
*Lightning - A little tan/brown bunny rabbit. He sure knew how to get somewhere fast.
*Tubby - The most absolutely discoordinated little kitten I have ever seen. He was black and white, chubby little kitty.
*Lobster - No, she wasn't a lobster. She was a cat! She was black and white, but she had one orange patch on her back that looked like a lobster.
*Oliva - This cat rings the doorbell for breakfast! She's also a twin of lobster, but instead on orange patch her's was yellow.
*Sasha - She looked like Lasy, just like in those old movies... Very sweet dog.
*Stripes - A very feisty little striped (Black and grey) cat. Had an attitude.
*Frisky - Cuuuute puppy dog. Short, brown, messy, huge dark eyes. Not very smart.. j/k
*Goldfish - Again, not a fish, a cat. She was black with an orange shape on her face that looked like a goldfish. So we named her that. lol.
*Mustache - This poor kitty was named mustache before we realized that she was female. lol. She was calico, so she had many colors. Black, white, orange and grey. The fur around her mouth was white, but she had a perfect little grey mustache right under nose.

Sorry for the delayed reply Airave but I went out shopping.

Financially I can't afford to keep a horse anymore and I also have MS and even though I am not in a wheel chair or anything I get very tired and sore and my balance is not good anymore. I think I would have some difficulty getting on a horse now. I have ridden for so long too. I am 54 now and have ridden since I was 7. I even worked as a Strapper in a race horse stables and did track work for a while. Unfortunately I have not been on a horse since around 1989 when my illness got worse.
