View Full Version : Kingdom Hearts II is driving me insane. May Contain Spoilers
Will something, like, ****ing happen already?
Played it for twelve hours, just met Cloud and Tifa and entered the Tron world, and almost nothing with the story has happened in eight hours. In fact, it feels like a weak extension of the first game, where every other word that comes out of our heroes mouths is either "Riku?" "King?" and "Kairi?". I think I got enough of that in Kingdom Hearts I, and I was really hoping for something more original in Kingdom Hearts II.
Then we have how simple and skimp the story, but it tries to make itself feel larger than it is through confusing storytelling and spaced out cut-scenes. There are hours upon of cut-scenes in this; honestly, most of the time you enter new areas, or even reenter old ones, there are cut-scenes triggered, and less than 10% of those have to do with anything relevant to the overall story. They almost always involve Sora, Donald and Goofy solving everyone else's problems, or build ups to the story sequences you've been waiting for. Here are two frustrating examples.
A couple cut-scenes of Kairi show up being tempted by Axel. She submits and follows his suggestion to enter an obviously evil worm-hole that will lead to Sora. It takes her to Twilight Town. I got to Twilight Town afterwords, and some kids ask me if I know Kairi. Sora excitedly answers yes. Me?
Yes!!! Hours of doing nothing and now something happens.
"Oh wait, some red-haired guy marched and stole her. Sorry."
...
Biggest waste of time ever. Then Goofy questions that it might've been Axel. Has Sora and co. even met him yet?
Then, Chip and Dale notice Hollow Bastion is covered in evil darkness, so I go there. I meet Cloud, who says he's going to kill Sephiroth. How unpredictable. Seriously, when you've got a non-canon story going starring the gaming industry's most popular characters, do something rich and creative, not something I saw nine years ago but now with mediocre voice overs.
Then I'm told to need to meet with Leon because he found Asnem's computer. I head to Merlin's House.
"Not here! Go to Leon's place!"
Go to Leon's place.
"Not here! Go to castle!"
Go to the castle.
"Not here! Go through that maze! Also, the King is there!"
Sweet! Finally a major storyline-related sequence!
Go through that maze, into Ansem's quarters.
"Not here! But here's a hot chick to tide you over!"
Tifa shows up, asks for Cloud, but fails to elaborate and Sora says he hasn't seen him. Everyone in the room is an idiot.
Then Leon shows up and takes us to Ansem's computer. The King isn't here, and we all get sucked into a computer program I like to MAFC: More Annoying Filler Crap.
And guess what's happened after all of those teases?
NOTHING. What a ****ing surprise.

Don't worry, the story will start to unfold rapidly in just a little while.
It really depends on the types of stories/movies you like to fully enjoy the KH games. Personally, I love it when movies start off at one direction and slowly ease to the climax. It seems a lot more professional than immediately telling the climax of the story that early on.
You still have a long way to go, you don't want all the best parts at the very beginning do you? :p
I hope that as you progress even further you will find the story more enjoyable. Let me know what you think of it when you finish. ;)
This is what I hate.. People don't apreciate the story in lenghty games like final fantasies or kingdom heart's. Because it's too lenghty... You have to know that the story will start to make sence in the midle of the game... I played the first one 60 hours and I understood everything after 40 hours.. after that it was a great joy to play it!!

You realize you aren't even half way done with the game yet right?

That's what people don't get about Shenmue, they just think the game is just about walking around and asking people for directions..., they have no clue what so ever, and as for Finaly Fantasy well I would never touch that game, 3 hours of installing it and setting it up for the 360 then 5 minutes of play, what a load of rubbish...

I don't mind not understanding anything. I don't mind lengthy games. What I do mind is not taking advantage of the massive amounts of potential laid at Square's feet when directing this game. Too little is happening in the arc for me to be interested in the story anymore, and there too little interactivity with the Final Fantasy cameos, so the only thing driving me to play this game (and I've only played it like two hours a day on average) is the gameplay, which isn't bad, but I want something, ANYTHING interesting to happen to keep me focused on the conflict, which just isn't happening.

Well I think you're not appreciating an incredible story if you ask me. Namuro truly knows how to direct games, he is like a gaming legend and extremely successful.
I just think that you like different stories than everyone else. KH is a long game, they have to save the best parts for the end. :D

I dunno, I prefer an ongoing conflict that's constantly changing like Killer 7, Metal Gear Solid 2, Syphon Filter, or even most of the Final Fantasy games. I'd love to appreciate the story, and I have no doubt it'll eventually pick up, but the player can't honestly be expected to be riveted by something that is ignored for eight straight hours.

Possibly. I don't know. I found even the story at the beginning to be fascinating.
I think right now you just don't understand that you are getting several clues about things that you will later find out. It will definitely be worth it. :tmb:

I loved the beginning also. It was slow gameplay-wise, but the story, though mysteriously presented, deifnately got me hooked, then once I got the Gummi ship as Sora, the story just stopped happening and all I've gotten are clues. I want something solid to happen. Fortunately, I just ran into King Mickey (FINALLY).

No worries. there's a lot of story you will run into very soon. ;)

Good to know. I may seem a bit hostile towards it, but I do love the gameplay. Lots of flashy and cool combo extensions and attacks that lots of flavor. Funs bosses also. I actually really like the linear level design more than the annoying maze-like design on the original. The Cave of Wonders was such a devil in the first, but it's pretty enjoyable in II. Same with Atlantica, but I still really dislike that level. Why did they keep that (and add all of those stupid music mini-games) but get rid of Deep Jungle? That level was really cool.

Monstro and Atlantica were my least favorite worlds in the original; they were awful.
