On This Page (http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/windowsxp.html) , you choose the TR1 Installer, which is the "Advanced installer" for TR1 (tr1advinst.zip). Unzip it, follow instructions.
Also, there is a TR1 XP patch (xp-tomb.zip). Extract the files to your TOMBRAID directory.

Sound is a known problem too. See this thread (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=11;t=001171) .... at last page you'll find the latest version of VDMsound. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

Nicholas, i myself play tombraiders 1-5 on WinME without any problem.
Now, i spent the last 2 full days with TR1 on XP, just to be able to help a member on this forum. I can tell you that i succeeded in getting the game running (without atmospheric sounds though...). Tell me exactly what you did to install, step by step. Be very specific, otherwise i cannot help.

When you launch Glidos, a little menu box comes up, with a choice menu which game you want to play (Tomb Raider of coarse). There is a button "Adjust..." Click that button, and choose your Resolution. On a 17" monitor choose 1280 x 1024. Also check on "Full Screen". http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif
