View Full Version : Install TR1 - WinXP

I'm having trouble installing TR1 (Gold) on Win XP. I have downloaded the "advanced installer" and "Glidos", however, I think my problem is with my video. I get the same problem whether I try to install with or without the advanced installer and "compatibility mode" makes no difference. The "properties" listed for my video are:
hp pavilion v70s on Intel 82845G/GL graphics controller.
After I run the installed game (either way), it causes my monitor to go blank. Then I get a bunch of lines down around the bottom. If I attempt this without the advanced installer, it eventually causes my computer to re-start and says it has a problem with a "drawing operation", and says my system has recovered from a serious error. Running the game from the advanced installer (with or without glidos) does about the same thing, but it just causes a blank screen (gray) and I get no picture. I realize that I don't have the best system in the world, but I hoped that I'd be playing TR1 again. Can anyone help?

Joseph,

This is a HUGE list, but here it is: (Thanks for the linked thread, too ... looks like I'm gonna have the same problem as that person did. My hard drive is partitioned -- C being the main drive, E the "recovery" partition (from HP and no back up software), and F and my CD rom)

HP is not offering much updates on this page (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?product=90862&lc=en&lang=en&cc=us&dlc=en&y=5&x=7&os=228) ... i would think your graphics drivers were out of date. So, maybe not. Still, have a look on this page, though.

Maybe your problem is related tpo the way you installed things. Do you use the latest vdm sound version 2.1.0 (http://vogons.zetafleet.com/ndldownload.php?filename=VDMSound2.1.0.exe) ?

 oooops... I mean E is the CD. There is no "F".
C is my main hard drive (partition)
D is the "recovery" partition (all back up software was put into this partition by HP instead of sending a software package)

E is the DVD/CD rom.

I tried my install without VDM sound and used the recommended IRQ setting (7, I think), but since I haven't been able to see anything yet, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to have sound until I actually start the game or not (it's been a long time since I played the game ... I bought it new when it came out).

However, since my attempt to install and play TR1, I did download VDM sound (version 2.0.4) to attempt the install of another old game (Elderscrolls - Daggerfall ... in which the sound doesn't work for it).

VDMS 2.0.4 that you use, is old, NewerPC-OldGames.
Download version 2.1.0 (http://vogons.zetafleet.com/ndldownload.php?filename=VDMSound2.1.0.exe) and read in this same other thread again (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=11&t=001171&p=1#000252) , how i experimented with it to get things right with it. Read the last pages rather, because my instructions get updated all the time, after some new discoveries i did studying this stuff... Problem seems to be: either you get athmospherical sounds, or Lara's sounds. What i DID achieve however, is getting the game to run smoothly. On the graphics part, your problem could get solved.

Joseph,

Thanks for your help thus far. Sorry for all the confusion as to what letter my CD rom is ... once again ... it's "E" :(

I re-read the entire thread again and noticed that much of Gabi's problem was related to her audio (as I fear mine will be also). I'm not sure that un-installing all my software on the "D" partition is going to be an option since I have no back-up software to re-install after the drive letter change (I would have to order it from HP).

There was further info on the thread that I didn't quite understand and thought I'd wait until I actually know that I have a problem with audio (windows in foreign text).

I was afraid after I told you what version of VDM Sound I had that it was indeed an old version (was easy to see it didn't match your version number). I had not originally intended on downloading it, and only installed that version because it was included on the patch that I downloaded for Daggerfall.

I've downloaded the newer version and am going to install it now and then re-install TR1. However, I don't quite understand how it could solve my video problem, but no more than I know about it, I'll certainly give it a try.

Will keep you posted

:D Josheph,

We are very close now ... but not quite :(

Downloading and installing the newer version of VDM sound did get the game running and it had sound. However, there are some "glitches".

The sound is full of static (sounds like a radio station fading out) but I have good sound for longer durations than I have intermittent static. The video works, but I think there is still some kind of problem there.

Each time the game shifts from scene to scene (first from the CORE acknowlegement to the part with the snake crawling and then Lara getting her mission) ... the game dumps back to the desktop very breifly with a "click" of the monitor. It comes immediately back to the game, though, and although the video was somewhat jumpy, I did manage to get to see most of it.

On another attempt, used "esc" to go past everything to the "main menu" and went to Lara's mansion to do some "training". I frowned at the big "GLIDOS" in the way of my view, but edured it through several rooms. I got to the room where Lara shows you how to get her to walk to the edge of things, and then do a jump and pull herself up when the game hung up. The music, however, was still playing, all the way up to the re-start of my computer to make it stop.

I tried it a couple of other times and got a profound "dink" sound from my computer. Doing an ALT + TAB, I noticed that I had some kind of ERROR. The ALT/TAB combination would only toggle between the Glidos server (which had the error) and the error itself, but I could not regain control of the game (I would get a yellowish blank screen when this occurred). I had to do a CTRL-ALT-DEL to get the task manager to get out of the game. On my last attempt to play, the same error occurred, and rather than "ending task" of the error first, I ended the task of the Glidos server, leaving the error to be visible.

I assume it was the same error when I was able to see what it said (viewable on the desktop). It said "Read Failure".

At any rate, I'm a lot closer to playing than I was before. Perhaps there is some "tweaking" we can do to solve these problems?

So you had "sound". Meaning: the athmospherical sounds ?

NewerPC-OldGames
25-06-04, 20:21
Not sure what would be "atmospherical", but I heard the following things:

When I caused Lara to move, I heard her footsteps, running sounds, grunts, etc. The music was playing in the background, but I did notice that I didn't have any control over the volume of either of the 2 sound volume controls (by accessing the "headphones" icon).

the game dumps back to the desktop very breifly with a "click" of the monitor That's as expected. You are changing from Glide Emulation through OpenGL to FMV's which are at different screen resolutions, so the monitor does have to change modes.

frowned at the big "GLIDOS" That is also expected. You have to purchase a Glidos licence ($5 I think), but worth the money. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif See this web page (http://www.glidos.net/purchase.html?lang=en).

Glidos server (which had the error) Can you check you have the latest version Glidos_v1_28.exe (http://www.glidos.net/download.html?lang=en)

:D Joseph,

Thanks for the complement on my writing style. I guess all the grammer and English in school must have sank in.

Details of my install ... hope I don't get to detailed, but here ya go.

I discovered a link to the forum after doing a search for TR1 patches for XP. I have already found "source codes" for some of my other old games (DOOM and Duke 3D), so I was hoping to find something for TR1.

I downloaded bokkie's "advanced installer" and as I mentioned earlier, tried it alone (no VDM Sound and no Glidos). As you know, that didn't work out. When I was "sucessful" (or at least to the point I am now), I removed my original attempts to install (C:\Tombraid), removed the older version of VDM sound and replaced it with the one you linked for me, started the advanced installer and followed the steps for installation (checked that I was using Glidos, allowed VDM sound to configure my sound and checked IRQ 7, inserted the TR1 disk and let it copy the files).

I checked the "make PIF file" and "Run Glidos after install" options to start the game. The game started with the "CORE" acknowlegement to start with, a flicker and dump back to desktop follwed by Lara seated at the desk receiving her mission, then a flicker and dump back to the desktop and the snake scene. I think it froze up that first time.

Situation in my TOMBRAID folders, files ... not exactly sure what you're looking for, but I'll give it a go.

It contains the following items:

"DOS4GW", "gldvesa", "glide2xovl", an MS-DOS shortcut to glidos, a glidos MS-DOS batch file, "HMIDET.386 - virtual device driver", HMIDRV.386 - virtual device driver", "hmiset.cfg", "INSTALLT", "pollpipe.dll",

"settings" dat file that contains this:
˙ Ľ H P K M G I O N œ Q R L S đ?

"tomb" (the actual .exe file, I think)

a VDM shortcut titled "tomb", a MS-DOS shortcut to "tomb", and "TOMB.SP".

When I attempt to start the game, I have to do so very cautiously. Of course, I have to put the CD in the CD-ROM, however, that causes a problem: when the autorun executes, if I don't click the "x" and close the DOS box before it changes the monitor, my computer will lose graphics (just like it does if I try to play the game without the glidos and VDM patches. I start the "Gidos Server", and click "Start Game" (I haven't attempted game play since I made my last posts yesterday).

I hope that I've given you the information that you were seeking, or at least a good laugh, if not. Let me know if you are looking for anything specific, and I'll attempt to locate it for you.

Simulation,

http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif Thanks for the info.

frowned at the big "GLIDOS"Does that mean the big "GLIDOS" is going to haunt me all the way, even after I actually start the game?

Can you check you have the latest versionI did check, and noticed that my version of Glidos is
version 1.26

I'll follow your link and upgrade to it. First, let me ask you ... what's the best thing to do ... uninstall my current version and then download, or download the newer version to the same directory ... maybe it will overwrite it?

And thanks for "quoting". I was curious how you did that, but I figured it out.
