View Full Version : Successful installation on XP??
Hello fellow raiders,
I was wondering: is there ANYONE who has successfully managed to install and play TR1 on Windows XP, with atmospherical AND ingame sounds AND good graphics???
If you have, please, please let us know about it http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/clown.gif , before I go insane http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/c-1.gif
I am very much looking forward to any reply.
Thank you http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

I recently did that on XP home and all was well. I used Bokkie's utility, along with Glidos and vdm sound. I haven't tried it yet with XP Pro though. Oh, and I have an original TR Gold disc.

DETAILS, Net...! we are interested.... (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=11&t=001171&p=12#000252) :D
Neteru, you might be our man! :D
How exactly did you proceed? http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/privateeye.gif
Btw., we are talking XP home, at least in my case.
And please try to explain in not too technical terms, my Computer knowledge is VERY basic.
But I'm sure, Joseph will be able to follow the more complicated parts.
Come on Net! ;) Quit that custom level you are playing for a moment and lend us some attention. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
We are desperate! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/c-1.gif
Actually I'm playing Oddworld Abe's Exodus! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
Oh hell, now what did I do? I don't remember very clearly. I used Bokkie's advanced installer Version 1.01 build 12. VDM sound version 2.0.4 and Glidos version 1.28, and the XP patch with the two files HMIDET.386 and HMIDRV.386. I did take a look at that thread Joseph, just. And then went on my disc to see what files and versions I used to install, hence the above.
So whatever the recommended method is, that is what I would have done. I've done so many things since then I haven't got a clue what that was, to the letter. All I know is that it all worked fine and I didn't have any trouble.
The SOUND, Net... the SOUND. Did you hear ALL sound. That is the point here.
Hm, I have a horrible feeling you want me to go through all this process again and note exactly what I do. Yes?
As far as I recall Joseph, there were NO problems at all. Put it this way, if there were any, I'd remember. Shall I try it again?
Yes. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/privateeye.gif
Hm, thought so. OK, donning my hat... http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/privateeye.gif "I may be gone some time..." lol
Please! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/clown.gif
OK, test complete. This is what I did;
Placed original TR disc in DVD drive E:\
Installed VDM sound to default.
Extracted Bokkie's Advanced installer and run
Click next
Check Yes I am using Glidos
Click next
Check Yes, I want the installer to configure my sound card,
Sub Check 'Use IRQ 7 (recommended, working on most computers)
Click next
Click next
Bookie's unitlity Installs game.
Click next, selecting no options, and finish with installer.
Install Glidos
Select English
Click OK
Click OK (for default directory).
Then load TR in Glidos using an 800 x 600 window. Introductory FMV's (including logos) run fine, sound present. Game menu comes up fine. Select new game, first in game FMV runs fine, sound present. First level begins. Graphics loverly ( :D ), and ALL sound present - effects AND background. Any questions? :D

That one was supposed to be displayed during your research... didn't expect you'd be back so quick.
Neither did I, and it was so cold out there! :D Um, yeah, I was gonna say 'That's a question?'. hehe
I will take all time now... http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/privateeye.gif
Your story is so short. :D
LMAO Joseph! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif I c-a-n aa--ll--w--a--y--s mm--a--k--e ii--t ll--o--n--g--e--r! :D
Thanks Neteru http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif
Can you guess what Joseph is doing right now??? :D
I will log out now, but certainly will give it a go tomorrow (hopefully Joseph will have worked it all out by then http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/whistle.gif ).
Thanks again http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif
He's just fed up because I didn't post a nice long DirectX log for him to chew over! :D
See you later Gabi http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

Maybe it is hardware related...
It is is not working on this pc, no matter how much i tried. :(
Strange. What is even stranger is that I could never get TR to run on Windows95!
Excerpt from the Glidos Support page:
Originally written by Glidos:No music. Since version 1.10, Glidos has provided a new feature that should restore the atmosperic music effects that were previously lost under Windows 2000 and XP. If this feature does not work for you, check that you are putting the Tomb Raider CD in your primary CD drive, and check also that you can play Audio CDs in that drive. If you can't play CDs: check your audio mixing settings; try altering the "digital audio" setting for the drive; and check you have an internal cable joining your CD drove to your sound card.
Well that's funny. Why doesn't it work, then. Maybe i'd have to try it without the vdmsound, then....
My cd-rw drive (D), where the TR1 cd is in, plays the sounds.
-Oh, btw, Sim: these are the titles of the tracks, according to the original TR1 cd and summed up in Windows Media player playlist: </font> Tomb Raider Main Titles</font> Lara Croft at Home</font> Powell and the Illuminati</font> Lara Dreams of Her Father</font> The Clock</font> Home Invasion</font> Alex West and Mr. Wilson</font> The Letter</font> Journey to Cambodia</font>These are the tracks that i sent to you. It is in the exact same order. Beginning with your "02 - Track 2" of coarse, and so on to "10 - Track 10".
Maybe you could rename? These title words are more fun than just plain "Track 2" up to "Track 10".
Back to this topic.
Glidos can play TR1 , it does not need the vdmsound installed to play sound. But it just won't play the atmospherical sounds. Despite the fact that Windows Media Player does play those sounds perfectly. Period. Plus: In Glidos, Lara's footsteps and gunshots sounds etc. come with at least a 1 second delay after the animation.
The synchronisation is correct if i play TR1 not in Glidos, but with VDMSound, only because vdms gives the option of choosing my sounddevice, and i choose "Creative Sound Blaster PCI (Wave)" which gives the best result. The default in the menu was "Primary sounddevice (DirectSound)" but that one creates a delay of at least a second too, just like Glidos.
In not ANY way, i succeeded to get the atmospherical sounds ingame.
I would like Glidos Himself to contribute in this thread with his knowledge.

It doesn't work for me either
But Joseph, you might be interested to know, that when I use Neteru's method I do get THE ATMOSPHERICAL SOUND but no footsteps, etc..
So I am basically back to square one :(
I have noticed that when I start the game with Glidos the VDLLloader (or whatever it's called) does not launch ( or at least it does not say so in the DOS window). But if I then do that manually I get the message from Glidos: "Can't copy Pollpipe" which ( as I have been told earlier) suggests that the Launchpad is trying to run twice.
I also installed without VDMSound, but then get no sound at all and after the first video it all gets stuck and I don't even get to the passport menue to start the game.
Have you had any more joy?
Hi GABI. Net's method is basically the same as mine. He uses less words. He does not tweak within the VDMS menu.
I tried the same, no luck. I been busy yet another day on this problem, read more articles on the vogon site.
What i learned is that some people do get all the sounds, others not. Those who succeeded used NO special trick to get it done other than what i tried myself. Just plain lucky, those guys i guess.
Also: yes GABI: Glidos loads the VDMSound automatically.
Point is: it seems to be hardware related. Some have luck and encounter no problem, but MANY don't have this luck (including me). Search in this forum and find many threads concerning this issue, all ending up in the echo of the topic starter fading away into silence, after some possibly helpful replies. Problem is never solved for these members.
To try to work around these hardware related blocades there are of coarse several options for which one needs thorough understanding though, of programming, commands, etc...
To name just one: right-click on the TOMB / VDMSound-shortcut and choose properties. On the the VDMSound tab, the "DOS command line" can be changed. It is allowed. So press the button "Change..."
Now "Change program Information" comes up. I ask, is there maybe some argument possible to be put in the "Arguments:" field that would make the game play both sounds. I mean ALL the sound, but i say "both" , because there are 2 sound packages: </font> the sounds related to the animation's actions, which are hidden in the gamefiles</font> and the atmospherical sounds that are seperate soundfiles and can be played in any cd player as music.</font>On many pc's the persistant problem is that the game only plays on XP with either one part of the sound, or the other. On some pc's (like Net's) there is total succes.
Now what i would like to know is the clue to this. I did not find it on the VOGONS (http://vogons.zetafleet.com/search.php?search_id=487775637&start=25) (just type in "tombraider" in the vogons's search field...) forum, nor on this forum's numerous threads that come up using using the search option for tombraider sound issue.
In this thread (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=11;t=001171;p=11) which is becoming longer and longer, i describe the steps i made.
In vdmsound, i tweaked to optimal settings for sound. I chose the setting that does not give sound delay to the animations.
In Glidos the sound is good quality, but with 1 sec. delay to the animations (and sometmes the graphics freeze). I wonder, considering Glidos loading the vdmsound automatically... why is then that the 1 sec. sound-delay is there, even though i tweaked in vdms untill there is no delay?

When Glidos is launched it runs c:\tombraid\glidos.bat
This file should contain :-
DOSDRV
gldvesa.exe Tomb.exe
Can you check that this file is correctly configured. It may be missing the DOSDRV line.
Thanks Simulation.
But no, the DOSDRV line is there.
I have tried to directly double click on the Glidos.bat file and launch the game that way, but then the server (Glidos) is not present and I only hear sound but have no picture.
If I launch the game within the Glidos box I get graphics, but only atmospherical sound and no footsteps etc.

When i doubleclick on the Glidos.bat file i get "Server not present", and that's it! You get the TR music to it GABI? http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/privateeye.gif
BTW during load, i see that Glidos launches with VESA mode. Even though i disabled that mode in VDMSound before.
I suggest we all continue this conversation in the tech forum, where it belongs. Having 2 threads on 2 forums regarding the same problem is not so convenient.
