I want the next game to have a lot of animals lying around.. they dont have to bite you... they're just there, coz it makes the game look real. A hippo bathing in the water would be good, for example. There should have been one in Ghana.

There has been speculation that a lot of stuff have been taken from Prince of Persia.. the pole swinging and all that, but what saddens me is that they didn't adapt the freeform fighting of the Prince. That was awesome. And to think Lara is trained in combat.. Crystal Dynamics should improve her fighting, because the gun fights are getting repetitive.. It would be awesome seeing Lara fight like a badass.

The Croft Manor was really well done, I have to say, but compared to the other levels in the game, it was too sheltered.. you can't get out, a few rooms, and after u get all the secrets, there's not much else left to do. I mean the whole point of the Croft Manor is to play house with Lara when you're tired of the real levels, right? Maybe in her spare time, we could get her in training with an in-house martial arts expert...
PLEEEASE do this! Now that we've warmed up to her having a staff, Lara having an on-site Shaolin Master could be so cool. She needs an Asian face to round out her staff. Just kidding...sorta. By the way, I live in Taipei & I've lived in Japan - I'm not stereotyping. I really do think it would be cool. It could be that monk she rescued in TRII - did he live all the way through? Were they Shaolin? Does it really matter? :p And the Prince Of Persia fighting system is really, really deep. If you could make it that good, I wouldn't call you unoriginal; I'd call you smart. Especially if you committed to the Shaolin (or whatever) style. I would LOVE to see Lara pound baddies like that. Plus, it would extend the life of the Manor to go there, train, and unlock moves. Wicked goodness! Plus the Master himself & the TRII reference (if you went that route) would be cool! I love this!
...or she could practice in a shooting range, or ride horses outside. That would be so fun i'd wet my pants.. and she could also do laps in the pool, sprint a 50 meter distance, and time it. another time trial. A garden maze perhaps? A dining room? A kitchen? And where is the bathroom?
I am simply assuming that the timed obstacle course will be back as soon as we get outside, but I had assumed we'd get the old-school Secret pling in Legend, so let me say, too, that I would enjoy the timed obstacle course. Stables with a variety of horses and a shooting range of targets that drop down from horseback (yes, like the second movie, shut up.) would be great! :tmb:

I like other things you said, too, jpraider, but I'm gonna keep the focus on these points. Sorry I used "cool" so much. Not into stretching my verbosity at the moment. :p

I really want one thing to stay the same:

Keep the Legend costume as her main choice for an outfit. Anyone else agree.

I agree as long as Classic, Grey is still available. Really, I think it would be cool if all the outfits you already unlocked in Legend can somehow be ported and if all the outfits in the sequel are new. But if the outfits aren't portable, PLEASE keep Classic, Grey! For me this is the new classic. I love it, I love it!

And there should've been at least one Yeti in Nepal (& that first cave should've been its maze-like lair! :p ). I mean, the sketchbook, COME ON! And there should've been ghosts/undead in England. And maybe zombies in Kazakhstan. More fauna next time, please, both lethal and decorative varieties.

I want tr8 to be bigger, longer and harder. It should allow for lots of exploration and there should be more puzzles and make them alot harder. Bring back the collecting items like it was in tr1-5. Make there many routes to go and make it so you dont know where your going sometimes. Have levels that have one main room and lots of other rooms where u solve puzzles to get items to use in the main big room. Get the inspiration from past tr games and not other games that aren't tomb raider. More vehicles but not like they were in legend. Get the inspiration for vehicles from tr3. You should have to think about how to use them. I like the headset coz it was quite funny but I didn't like the hints u got. I think they should get rid of the autograb coz it made it way too easy. In past games if u misjudged a jump u would be punished but in legend it was too easy and thats not tomb raider. More variety in enemies, have more animal enemies and big mosters. Any bosses there are make them giant monster things. Legend got this right with the snake in england. Also have less bosses and make the few that there arre harder. Reintroduce the fear factor. I want jumpy music at some points to make me think oh no something bads gonna happen now. Get rid of binnoculars, I never use them. The rewards system in legend was good keep that. However on saying that have better unlockables and not outfits. I want to see it all when I go into spikes, it looks good in past games. Get rid of shiny objects and make the player have to figure out for themselves where to use grapple. If u have the mansion make it more about exploring it and having fun and less about collecting the rewards. Bring back classic things like the racetrack and the maze. Have the old inventory back, be able to choose between loads of weapons and have medi packs like in AOD. To be honest I dont care about the story at all so please concentrate more on the game than the story. Have things jump out at u more and have something kill u surprisingly like a boulder coming out of nowhere and crushing u or an enemy jumping out. Make lara more like she was in previous games with her jumping coz with all the stuff she did in legend she didnt look human. The most important thing is long and hard puzzles. Have mostly tomb levels but a few non tomb to have a variety in the levels. ok thats enough for now but I'll be back with more suggestions later.

I'd like to see return to levels, where Lara goes back to an old location. Like revisting St. Francis Folly, with new sections in and the same kind of design as the original level, but with the puzzles changed and some added rooms and some more updates to make it feel like you've been their before, while at the same time it feeling new and fresh.

I also totally agree with this....otherwise, apart from tiny details the game was incredible!!:D

Another suggestion of mine is to have lara the ability to sprint. Have it so that you have to occasionally sprint and jump to make a jump. Bring back classic tr controls with more added features and moves. In between trs 1-5 the controls were the same and it just had more things added in each game. Make u have to combine items to make iems to use. Basicly for a perfect TR8 just make it like Tr 1-5 were made. The length should not be like tr5 tho but the gameplay can be just like it. Make the puzzles as hard as tr4. You might say I'm old fassioned and stuck in the past but I'm only 16 and I still prefer games I played in my childhood. Most of my friends liked the old trs a few years ago but now they play other games from this time but not tr. Tr is still the best game series of all time and the classics were the best. Make tr8 like the classics plz.

Legend was an amazing game but I think all of us wanted a little more in some areas. For me personaly, I want to see alot added to the mansion. Using the layout from the piggyback guide I added a few thing that I think would be great. Take a look and let me know what you think.

No.. i disagree.. i'd rather have the classic outfit as her default outfit.. when i play in that outfit.. it just feels like Tomb Raider.. no matter what level i play, that outfit always make me feel like playing i'm playing TR..

but of course different outfits look better in different places.. but that one would be the best as the default outfit..

but i wouldn't mind if the Legend outfit stayed the default outfit.. cause i like that one to, just like the classic outfit more ;)

(as long as she changes outfits a lot, i'm happy.. i love that about TR)

I want the Classic outfit back, scrap the Legend clothes- they decreased the feeling of Tomb Raider even further.

Plus TR Freak, I agree with 99% of what you've said! Apart from the bit about the storyline - the storyline is very important to me, but I've never been really disappointed by a TR storyline yet, I'm sure this aspect will be ok - as long as TR8 is a bit deeper than Legend's, more like the classics.

The classic outfit looks weird in TRL...because the backpack is not the old backpack...the braid are gone...and the belt is changed too.

I like your maps and I would LOVE to see the observatory from the first film, hopefully with some gameplay element. It would be interesting to actually need to do something in Croft Manor, as long as it's still open as a Main Menu option all the time, too. It would actually be cool, I think, if the player had to figure out to go there to do something to affect the game between levels.

I love the Upper Pool idea and a HUGE Bath Room that deserves to be two words! :tmb: I also think it would be cool to have a Garage. I would definitely like to see a return of the Treasure Room, Dining Room, and Kitchen. Putting Winston's room near it makes good sense. :tmb: I assume that the watery place you've put in the tunnels next to the Treasure Room is the Secret Library and Aquarium from TRIII. I definitely want that back - imagine how beautiful the aquatic life could be now!

The only thing I would edit, though, is that I think neither Zip nor Alister lives at the Manor, but I could be wrong about this. I would also add a wine cellar and a toilet on the lower floor for guests. I'd like there to be NO closed doors and no unreachable balconies or rooftops next time. I wanna go everywhere! :jmp:

Thanks for sharing these, Joe! They're great! :D

PS- Also, just thought of something - It would be cool to somehow unlock art to place in the frames around Lara's home. It seems easy enough to implement (these could even be the Croft Manor Secrets!) and it would allow not only for customization, but no repetition or images as there is in Legend. Even better if it's real pieces from Matisse to Rothko to Warhol to Shepard Fairey to Chiho Aoshima, with a little info like Title, Artist, and Year of Production. It could be educational, too! And I bet the Crystal D team would have fun choosing the art. We've already experienced customizing Lara, and I hope the Outfit system returns, but it would extend my time and love for the Manor if I could add my own touches to it, too. Just the frames would be enough. It doesn't have to become The Sims or anything. But I imagine a woman like Lara would have a pretty hefty and diverse collection of paintings and would likely change them up from time to time.

I'm a little late here and i don't know what everybody else said, sorry for repeting anything

- The legend engine, moves, accesories amazing
- The level variety was great too, but needs more levels
- Needs more variety in vehicles (some water ones, snowmobile...), weapons (uzis, rocket launcher, revolver...) and animals (sharks, crocodiles, snakes, wolfs...)
- Love the unlockables, lots and lots of them, specially the costumes
- Also loved the rewards and time trials
- Adding some keys will not hurt
- More difference in the difficulty levels, the higher the difficulty the less tips and the harder the puzzles
- I think the combat was great, loved the bullet-time and grenades
- The story and cutscenes great
- The manor is amazing, but needs more runs, I missed locking wiston in the fridge :D
- The interactive cut-scenes also great
- Absolutely loved Lara's personality and her comments
- and Absolutely loved Lara's look, so beautiful, sexy and strong

FIST OF ALL, YOU DID A GREAT TOMB RAIDER. :gki:
I know it is difficult to add the whole idears of us, but i would like to give you my own feed-back, but i know that you are all busy, so i don't mind if you don't read it :D :

ALL GOOD THINGS:

- Lara moves brilliant and NOT like a monkey!
- The idea with the headset was really awesome, Zip is so funny
- The music is the best ever!
- The idea with the outfits is sooo cool!
- I heard, that someone want to have the old secrets: WHY? That secrets
are great, and the rewards are great too!
- You did the best mansion ever (I hope in the next game it will be better :D)
- The way you introduce the caracters
- the interactive sceens
- It was a great feeling to defeat the bosses, please keep them!
- THE LOCATIONS ARE SOOOO GREAT!!!
- the tourch and the magnetic grapple are very good gears!
- And of course the story is awesome, really great!

WHAT, i think, YOU CAN DO BETTER IN THE NEXT GAME:

- The main theme ins't bad or something, but every Tomb Raider game has the same main theme, only a bit changed. PLEASE ADD THE CLASSIC MAIN THEME AGIAN, IT IS A TRADITION THAT YOU SHOULD NOT BREAK!

- Please do something about the interactive cutsceens, they arent difficult to do.

- The different class EASY, NORMAL and HARD aren't really different. THIS IS THE MOST PROBLEMATIC THING IN THE GAME! For example you could do the interactive sceens in HARD more challengeing or set up the AI of the enemies in the HARD mode and so.

- The Puzzles aren't difficult at all. Please make them so difficult like in the other Tomb Raider series, that you need some hours to know what to do. If somebody have no idea what to do, or don't want to think about it, he can you the R.A.D mode, you know. So everybody has fun.

- PLEASE, give us more things from the past. I loved to see the Natla Boxes for example. Mor of these surprises would be really cool.
(I would love to see VON CROY again, but please, NO MURDERING! :D )

- TELL US WHAT HAPPEND TO LARA IN EGYPT, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- and last but not least: Please add more different enemies like animals, not only men with guns, and if you add animals, so please do that the animlas only attack you, if you shoot at them.

Thank you for reading and i hope this thread will show you what you can do better in the next game.

I've just realised that after watching this thread since it started that I've not actually posted my suggestions like the rest of you!

So here goes:

Lara's appearance, character and voice:

To me she doesn't look like Lara anymore, which needless to say isn't a good thing. Yes, she looks great, Yes she looks beautiful - but she doesn't look like Lara.
Bring back her original hair, the braid for a start. Her face doesn't look anything like Lara's should either. What did you do with her original classic clothes? These help create the TR feeling through image: taking them away wasn’t an excellent thing to do. (People will think this is picky, but hey - it's my opinion.) The clothes are something that define Lara, I’d like these back.
Lara seems to have also gone under a personality transplant. She’s changed, a Lot. From quite a few aspects Isn’t the Lara Croft we know and love. Sure, many many people have fallen for this Lara, I chose not to be blinded by her looks though.
Voice acting was really good. I’ve not got any complaints here really. I preferred Jonell Elliot much more than Keeley Haws, (not complaining about her voice, it suits the image of Legend Lara well enough) because she gave Lara a fantastic personality in TR 4+5+6. The character Keeley Haws presents is different, reducing the Lara feel (sadly) once more. But hey – I’m sure you guys at CD love her, and likely won’t get back Elliot or Lara’s personality.

Movement

Does she move like Lara? Erm, no. Not at all.
= Bring back her great big jumps, instead of the pathetic half-leaps this "un-Lara" does.
=Bring back her quick turn flips to make it feel more like Lara.
= Her running - she never stops. Give us a walk button instead of moving the analogue stick slower. Give us the option of actually taking our time and being careful - something the old Lara did a lot.
=Sprint. Give it back. Please.
= The acrobatics.. I'm in half a mind about these. Yes, they look cool - but Lara is an explorer (apparently, don't know what happened there), Not a gymnast. Sure she can do big jumps and rolls, but there's not really much point in having her vault and flip and backflip across a Japanese rooftop.

Controlls
The controls were fine as they were, better even than they are now. Why did you change what didn't need changing?
My biggest argument here is
1. Swimming. The swimming was near perfect in TR 1- 6. Legend has messed up swimming, what was wrong with the jump button and directions? Did you have to make "Lara" need a button for up, a button for down, and a button for forwards? Change for the sake of change is plain pointless. If it's not broken, why fix it?
2. *Autograb* Scrap it, please Please PLEASE get rid of this horrendous addition!! We're perfectly capable of making Lara grab things- we did for 6 great installements. Why did you change this? It takes away the feeling of TR even more. :hea:
3.Pushing/Pulling. This was brilliant on a grid system, and now it’s near impossible to use.

The inventory is poor. An option of 4 things? What?
Health, binoculars, light, guns.
The old TR's had the inventory set out brilliantly: bring up a different screen and cycle through her inventory, and her *Different* guns. Having four buttons speeds up TR even more, as if we aren’t rushed enough.

Crawling has been reduced to crouch-walking, what was wrong with crawling?

Music

Someone else said to get rid of the background music. I agree – old Tr’s made do with occasional background noises, this generated one hell of a feeling. The music in TRL is barely noticeable I must say, and some of it is completely un-TR ish and gets rid of the feeling completely. Here I refer to the heavy beat music whilst riding the motorbike.
Tomb Raider isn’t just a game – it’s a Classic game, with Classic music. The music on other TR’s was so brilliant because when it sounded it fit in so brilliant with what was going on at the time : in TRL there’s a constant hum of monotonous background music that doesn’t really do anything for the player.
Why did you get rid of the traditional Tomb Raider theme ? Bring it back please!

Vehicle

Vary the track a bit please! I can’t stand having the constant feeling of DeJaVu when riding the motorbike “Oh this bit of the track looks like that bit back there.. wait a minute… “ . Again, I refer to an Old Tomb Raider to better this: TR 4 level with the Jeep. An entire level set out with tricky paths, and puzzles to solve whilst with the vehicle. TR2, Boat, again the same thing.
Legend: A couple of levels with a straight line to follow, people to shoot, can’t get off, no puzzles.

Combat

Not since Tr5 has the combat been as fun. TrAoD’s new engine didn’t go well with combat, and Legend’s goes even worse.
I really used to love running around with Lara’s pistols held high, her shotgun in a mildly relaxed grip.. Legend has her constantly point the guns forward. You can’t turn around properly like you used to be able to with the guns.
Legend introduced a flaming big target that screamed “THIS IS WHO YOU’RE SHOOTING”. Very unnecessary. Scrap the target. Give Lara back her old freedom of being able to run past a target whilst shooting at it, not her current “auto-spin Lara so she has to look at her target” , this reduces the fun, reduces the feel of Tomb Raider, and of Lara.
She runs around with her guns pointed out infront of her – frankly it looks stupid, if you’re going to run around with guns out, then it’s much more easy to not have them stretched out infront of you constantly. Take ideas from TR’s 1-5 (and even 6).
=Bullet-time increases the feeling of a shoot-em-up.. I wasn’t keen on this addition, but I’m sure you loved it, so it’s unlikely that bad-mouthing it will make you decide to get rid of it.
= Give us more big weapons at a time! I hated only being able to have one big gun at a time, it didn’t feel like TR.

Enemies

In the first level of TR2 there is a more varied selection of enemies to kill than in the whole of Legend. Vary what we can shoot, please!

Puzzles/trickyness

Hoo-boy.. What is Tomb Raider without Puzzles? – Legend. That’s what. What happened to being baffled about a certain part of a level? Of actually being unsure of what to do next?

Tomb Raider has been turned from a top-quality puzzle game, to a mediocre platform game. This is Not Tomb Raider.. ONCE in the entirety of Legend was I even slightly stuck, and I even got past that after about 5 minutes. Tomb Raider puzzles can take hours/ days or more to figure out. Don’t be afraid of letting us have Time to do things, to work things out CD. This lack of puzzles has destroyed the feel of Tomb Raider in Legend, more than anything else.
Make it challenging like it used to be. Legend is simply getting from one place to the next by following a simple ABC path. It’s so linear, it’s painfully easy.
Tomb Raider is a matter of getting from one place to the next, via A, B, possibly back to A, to C, to D, maybe B again.. It’s “tricky” . Don’t be afraid of that word, it’s not going to bankrupt you.
= Bring back keys. Bring back switches. Bring back level items! Legend is the only “TR” so far that has none of these.. It’s not very Tomb Raidery. Please fix this, I know you can..

** Something that ties in with the above. **
Levels in Legend give you the feeling that you HAVE to rush from A-B-C. On screen tips pop up, button reminders, pointers, enemy targets, shiny objects : Get RID of these un-Tomb Raiderish help features! Remember, don’t be frightened of ‘trickyness’.
Zip and Alistair.. Hmm. I’d like them a Lot more if they didn’t try and help out so much. And if they didn’t talk as much. Or if they actually left Lara do what she wanted and figure it out for herself for a bit.

Pickups
Lara runs over weapons and medipacks and they’re picked up. Again, Lara is rushing rushing rushing, I wan’t her to actually “Pick up” pick ups, like in the old games, hence the term “pick up”.

Killing Lara

Here is another thing that you don’t seem to want us to do, like taking our time. Tomb Raider used to be fun when you could chuck Lara off a Really high drop and watch her fall to her demise, listening to her great big Scream. You gave her the fade to black as Soon as she starts to fall, I really don’t like this. It’s like you consider every death an accident, and want us to get back to playing as soon as it happens. (Run Run Run Lara, don’t stop, careful now, don’t explore… ! ) This rushing feeling has decreased the TR feel, and made it even More of a *platform game on speed.*

Speaking of speed – chuck the Time Trial aspect. Time trails are for car games, not Tomb Raider. It really gave away the shortness of the game having time trials, and increased the feeling that whilst playing Legend you Must Not Take Your Time, but run run rush rush through the levels, no wait, they’re not really levels, they’re more like ‘stages’ , until you finish.

Camera angles

Doesn’t bother me too much, but I much preferred it when the camera would follow Lara and we had a “look” button. Legend’s camera is too far away from Lara, I feel even More distant from her than I already did with things mentioned above. If you’re adamant not to get rid of this high-fly cam, then could you please incorporate an option of “follow Lara cam” ? AoD was quite similar in that you could spin the camera, but it usually followed Lara, in a TR style.

Interactive cutscenes

These seemed like Puzzles! Yet you let the pre-rendered cutscene do it all for us, all we had to do was press the right buttons when the :flashed: on screen. It felt like whack-a-mole, I’d much rather have done these bits manually, not in a cutscene.
The part in Peru when the floor collapses and Lara climbs up onto the falling pillar- that would have been a good Tomb Raider moment ! (Gasp!) But it was done in a clip, which instantly flushed the feeling down the toilet.

Perhaps I should finish on a positive note before you all think I’m a complete whinger.

I really like the graphics. Keep them. Just improve nearly Everything else so I feel like I’m actually playing Tomb Raider again.

Thanks for reading, and if you take anything I’ve written into actual consideration and manifestation then Thank you again!

i want a linear obstacle course in her backyard like in tomb raider 3. the mangled up training course in her mansion isnt as fun as it used to be because you cant just run it through all the way. theres alot of guessing involved.

I have another suggestion. I wasn't being entirely truthful about saying I dont care about the storyline. I dont care about the story but I do want the end of tr4 explained and how she survived and got out. Also I somehow want Von Croy to come back from the dead, I really loved his character and as soon as I played AOD and saw him die I was like "NO!!! he cant be dead" I dont care at all about legends story so I couldn't care less if tr8 is a sequel to legend. Von Croy was the best enemy tr has seen yet. I dont care how they bring him back but just bring him back. Also I liked the idea of a second playable character they had in AOD but in that game they did it poorly. In tr8 a second playable character should have more cool features and moves that are different from Lara. However in saying this I also say this, DONT BRING KURTIS BACK. He was terrible to control and was no different from lara except a bit worse.

I played all previous TRs, played Legend 100% on Xbox on hard mode, read this thread. Now here's a sum up of what I want to see (too):

* more puzzles that needs clever minds
* those conversations with alister and zip... make them something like in solid snake game. Think of radio interference from the stone walls or something And they are not supposed to talk when Amanda raids the mansion
And they are looking with her using a camera?
* require or advise to use analog controls. I played the Xbox version and it was ok.
* auto-grab is good. Override with 'B' (on Xbox) button instead of first grabbing and then letting go. Stop at edges when walking slow.
* more use of the stealth-walk mode? or perhaps that's for a different genre.
* checkpoints are good. perhaps use different method in harder modes. but sometimes I want to kill Lara just to restore a convenient checkpoint.
* swimsuit in normal levels too please! even though it looks dumb with the disappearing weapons
* screenshot function to make lots of swimsuit pictures
* I hope the mansion will be expanded in the next version.
* More simple creatures... I only saw a few jaguars and that's it. But I guess they were all killed by Rutland's men beforehand. And what's up with the disappearing bodies and reappearing enemies?
* system-unique cheat codes. and more of them.
* target ring could fade away, instead show me some blood :P
* good inventory limit, but perhaps backpack could hold some items like keys etc. you know.. for puzzles
* custume change option in menu while playing the game
* just a warning: don't play as other characters like in AOD.

The rest can stay as they are.
I like the many ways she can die.
I can't wait to see the sequel of this story and how that paradise island looks like.

I love Lara's look, personality and voice more than I ever have outside of Angelina Jolie. I actually prefer the look even to the films because, although Ms. Jolie is my favorite actress and one of my favorite people, when I see her I see Angelina Jolie while Lara looks like, well, Lara. :p I also love the controls, especially for swimming and boxes. I even thought as I was playing, "Wow, they actually managed to make pushing and pulling boxes immersive, dynamic, and interesting. Whoa!" I wouldn't change these things at all. I liked the new Inventory system, but wouldn't mind a bigger Inventory in the sequel. I never really liked Lara crawling on all fours like a dog, but I wouldn't cry over this, either. I loved the background music in Legend, but I also noticeably missed the immersion of simple ambient sounds. I'm of two minds about this. You guys at Crystal D work your magic and find the balance that makes me happy! :p I think Rivendell's tone is a little harsh, but these suggestions are superb:

I've just realised that after watching this thread since it started that I've not actually posted my suggestions like the rest of you!

So here goes:

Movement

= Bring back her great big jumps, instead of the pathetic half-leaps this "un-Lara" does.
=Bring back her quick turn flips to make it feel more like Lara.
= Her running - she never stops. Give us a walk button instead of moving the analogue stick slower. Give us the option of actually taking our time and being careful - something the old Lara did a lot. (meznu: I've come around to the idea of reintroducing the Walk button if possible)

Rather than remove the acrobatics, I'd say INTEGRATE them. Make them genuinely useful. Make traps that require gymnastic precision. Make the melee combat more a part of the game and these physical moves more necessary. I never used melee combat in Legend. Also, give us real training - jpraider suggested having a "Kung-Fu Master" and free-form fighting system earlier in this thread. I love that idea!)

Use Alein Duinn vocals again please, but bring the original theme back as the main musical melody. Even people like me, who ABSOLUTELY LOVE what Troels Folmann did with the soundtrack, miss the old theme.

Enemies

In the first level of TR2 there is a more varied selection of enemies to kill than in the whole of Legend. Vary what we can shoot, please!

Puzzles/trickyness

Rivendell's points about the pacing of Legend have finally helped me understand that my least favorite thing about the game is not that it is "short;" it's that it wants me to move fast. I think this level design is likely a by-product of intending the levels to be used for Time Trial upon completeion, so I concur not necessarily with removing, but with carefully revamping the Time Trial feature. While I did enjoy the Time Trials to a limited extent, I think it would be more interesting if completing a level unlocks a Time Trial with similar geographic features and puzzles or a truncated design or a section of the completed level, like timed puzzle completetion or something. That would be cool! Completing a level unlocks a mini-rush that concludes with a super-secret really tricky puzzle! Any of these changes mean it wouldn't be exactly the same as the level again, too! :tmb: It is my sincerest hope that the very idea of rushing through entire levels in the next game to complete Time Trials will be just downright silly, given their size and complexity. Please attend to this.

Thanks for reading, and if you take anything I’ve written into actual consideration and manifestation then Thank you again!

*Rivendell*
:)

As I've posted earlier in this thread, I really like the Interactive Cutscenes, but since the button presses correlate with the in-game functions, I really don't think I need to see the flashing button icons. Let me WATCH the scene, see what needs to be done in context (ie: grapple, duck, jump, shoot/action), give me a timing prompt, let ME figure it out and do it, and give me that little chime for confirmation. Not only would this make the gameplay more interesting and immersive; the scenes would be FAR more cinematic without little buttons on top of the image. This can also be applied, as I've posted earlier in this thread, to near-miss jumps. :D

Thank you, Rivendell! And muchlove to Crystal D. I hope you're reading these. There are some great ideas in here. :tmb:

There is a walk animation (I repeat, walk not sneak) for Lara in the PC verison of the TRL...you just tap sneak button when you go forward as oppose to holding the sneak key...

As for the new inventory system in TRL...well I like it because I won't have to pause the game, search for the item I would like to use, then use it (it is slow and inefficient use of time...like unskippable cut scenes...the same reason why I hate CD for not directly assigning Esc key to skip cut scenes)...but adding a special inventory slot for keys and other special pick up would be great and add depth to the puzzles...

Edit: Another thing...I like Lara's walk animation in TRL...but when CD removed the grid system, is that move still useful? I never find any use to that move after I learn it...

Another thing...give player the choice to customize inventory before the start of each mission...like choose between flare or PLS for lighting device, choose between deagle, pistol and uzi for primary weapon...and for backpack space, player can choose between fit more medipack, extra grenade/ammo space or to include the binocular etc...

You never know if CD will include traps in next instalments that require walking, like the spikes that come out the floor in Prince of Persia.

I'll put my bet on Amanda...
I didn't think Amanda was the best yet. She was just really crazy. Von Croy was smart and could do everything lara could. At least he could in the first level. It would be cool to have a fight with Von Croy as well.

I'm quite happy with the game. The graphics are stunning, the textures gorgeous, the rythm between tombs and cities and locations was great and her voice excellent, so the following are comments from a satisfied customer:

My top wishes:

- Integrate a less violent path as an alternative. i.e. borrow part of the Splinter Cell concept or offer a climbing path to get around shooting scenes (I generally wasn't too happy with the battles, especially the bosses).

- More mind-boggling riddles with a fair chance of solving them (most were too easy and did not require actual understanding). Like the one in Bolivia. If the Gold up there would have been visible I would have taken the time to understand the mechanism.

- More differentiation between easy/medium/hard. For example some of the exlanatory comments that gave away the solution (e.g. Zips comment on the coffin in England) could be left out or made more cryptic in medium or hard mode. Or hard mode could include more crumbling ledges, breaking poles, rolling boulders than in easy mode. Or hard the yellow hand icon (with ledges not properly grabbed) would only be there in easy mode. Or the camera views that point out where to go next could only be there in easy.

- I find one weapon to carry enough, but I think there should be a fair supply of ammo for all weapons during the game.

- Place checkpoints after cutscenes (especially in tough situations like the boss fights).

- Make it longer!

But generally good work. I'm faithful that TR8 will rock big time!

I have another suggestion. Make the mansion have a training section to it teaching you the basics of the game and having an assault course like the one in tr2.There could also be unlockables if u complete it under a certain time. This could also be the same for a racetrack like the one in tr3. Also having a big robot thing like the one in the tr movie. You could set the difficulty and if u defeat it at higher difficultys you could get upgrades and unlockables. This would be very fun to do if u dont feel like doing the actual levels and it is good training for new players.

When she fails to grab a ledge with both hands (and you have to push a button to save her from falling) don't have that screaming yellow "OH NO I AM FALLING SO QUICKLY PUSH BUTTON X"-image on medium and hard mode. Lara hanging with one hand and trying to grab the ledge is visible enough on its own.

also some more vehicles.. like kayak or boat in a deep jungle... JEEP as drivable !!

- Make all the levels seperate instead of like 3 in 1
- Make levels lonnnnger!
- Let Lara SPRINT!
- Add LOTS of rooms to the mansion (most of which have to be unlocked via secrets.) And of course add an exterior! A HUGE one! :D
- LESS hints please! The game was like one big training level!

I think thats about it. If I remember anything else then I'll add it on. ;)

There is a walk animation (I repeat, walk not sneak) for Lara in the PC verison of the TRL...you just tap sneak button when you go forward as oppose to holding the sneak key...

I think what people mean when they say they want a Walk button is a dedicated button that limits movement to only the Walk animation, like in the Tokyo party. Yes, there is a walk animation, but it takes careful precision to maintain a walk with the analog control stick. Some people don't want to have to work this hard to walk continuously, I think.

Yeah, I think this would be great. And it would give Winston something to do if it was him you asked to pack your stuff.

I think it would be cool if there was an audio cue with Lara saying something like "Nearly there" or something, too, but especially if the camera was moved a bit closer to Lara like in older games, it would be very easy to see when you only grip with one hand. The player knows which button to press. I'm all for the player needing to pay attention.

I'm quite happy with the game. The graphics are stunning, the textures gorgeous, the rythm between tombs and cities and locations was great and her voice excellent, so the following are comments from a satisfied customer:

I share your sentiments, Markus. What a nice way to start a suggestion list!

This point about the puzzles/riddles/secrets is excellent. I would like it to be possible to figure out the puzzles, but not easy. If all of Legend had that "look around and see what you find" feeling, the Gold Secrets would have felt more integrated. As it stands, finding them was the only thing that required - or rewarded - going off the beaten path. I would either like lots of hidden secrets all over the place (best) or some indication that "there's something over there and now I just have to figure out how to get it." With the latter, though, I wouldn't want it to be "blinding light-buttons on screen-look I'm over here" obvious. Just visible or suspicious, at least. I had to have people make up a riddle to even imagine there was a Secret where it was in Bolivia. Otherwise I'd have used a guide, which I never want to do, especially with TR.

The difference in difficulty modes really should be about more than just combat, since TR is about so much more than just combat. In truth, combat, for many players, is the least significant part of the experience. Exploratory perils and brain-teasing puzzles should ramp up, too, at the higher difficulties. This would make me very happy. I'd say, too, that puzzle-solving feedback from Zip and Alister should only be given BY REQUEST on any difficulty level, but not even available on Hard. This would be easy to implement without changing key dialogue moments, too. If they only give answers when you ask, then there's no option to ask on Hard mode. As mentioned above, I think the button on-screen for a nearly-grabbed ledge is unnecessary for all modes. If it is included again, I really hope it's limited to Easy.

My favorite weapons are Lara's twin pistols, so I don't care if I have tons of big weapons or few. I hope the people who do care about this are happy with what happens in the sequel.

Checkpoints. I've been meaning to post something about Checkpoints for a couple of days. I like the Checkpoint system. What I would really like to see in the next game - REALLY REALLY REALLY like to see - is an option to skip from one Checkpoint to the next when replaying a level if not doing the Time Trial, assuming that the Time Trials are still set in the main levels which I hope is not a safe assumption. To give a clear example, I would love it if I could replay Peru, get to the motorcycle sequence, go to Pause Menu, choose Next Checkpoint, skip through to the Cinematic when Lara shoots the truck and move into the next area of the game. You know what I mean? It's not that I hate the motorcycle sequences, but I don't wanna do them every time. And in Japan, too - maybe I just wanna skip right to the Penthouse fight sequence without all that jumping. Or some days maybe I even wanna do ONLY the motorcycle sequence. Having marked Checkpoints seems to really make this kind or flexible replay possible.

A Boss Rush mode might be fun, too. I really liked the Boss fights. And what if Time Trials were lots of different obstacle courses on the grounds of Croft Manor? Each time you complete a level, you unlock a new section of the Estate with more Secrets to find, scenery to enjoy, puzzles to solve, and a Time Trial course to do! Then the levels don't need to be constructed to be rushed through and it adds another layer to the Manor's unlock system.

I just keep posting. I hope I'm not annoying you guys by saying what I think, if anyone at Crystal D even reads this stuff... Oh well. Love you-TRUST you-Thank you, Crystal D!

Okay, this is an suggestion for Eidos...but since this is gameplay related, I'll post it here...

What's with the cross product promotions?!?! I feel like I'm gonna puke when I watch the Jeep trailer for TRL...but that is nowhere near the feeling I have for the half-baked motorcycle level made for Ducati...why do you have to make business deals that compromise the gameplay???

Focus more on the gameplay and less on the money PLEASE!!!

Dunno how CD will feel but I was getting a headache readin all them suggestions lol. Here are my suggestions, been a devoted TR fan ever since I saw a small screen of lara in an underwater temple.... captivated my imagination and I hope some of our suggestions are heard and met.

1./ Wading, would be nice to see her walk into some shallow water and it get gradually deeper until she goes into a swim (think they introduced this TR2).

2./ More animal enemies with better AI, supernatural enemies like statues coming to life, love to see the Yeti return, bears.

3./ Would be nice to have a prehistoric level, not all the dinosaurs would have to be enemies, just create atmospher, have terodactyls swooping in.... (possibilty of grabbing one and using it to fly to a destination)

4./ More vehicles. Bike is amazing but how about also having a jeep, a boat, earoplane. These are all things that can be done extremely well on the next gen consoles and I believe can still be done on ps2 etc maybe a porsche :-)

5./ Keep the costumes, add more to the wardrobe.... could go on forever aboout what we could add lol. (have a great idea for story line too which would make some costumes amazing... can we send things to CD like concepts etc.?)

6./ A continueing storyline from Legend would be amazing... following a seperate but well thought out story is good too but we just getting to find out more about lara's past and I think it would be a mistake to ignore the potential of a folllow up story.

7./ I think EVERYTHING CD has done with Lara and the Tomb Raider engine and the gam, eplay is amazing... I would take NOTHING away from what they have done.... only giving suggestions for things would like to see in future games.... loved how they caught emotion and that almost film like feel with the story... Well done peoples at CD.. Rock on!!!

OMG GET RID OF THE FLY THROUGHS!

Everytime you enter a new area the camera goes off lara, and gives you a guided tour of the area, revealing where you will be going and how to get there!

Its like being in the cinema and having someone behind you say what happens next! >.<

Maybe have them on easy mode but for medium and hard, no way!

The shiny surfaces for the hook, voice hints and the silly yellow icon telling you to grab on, should ONLY be in easy mode.

- longer game ( first and foremost )
- I'd like a water-level like we had in TR2 ( I always thought that was way cool )

- mansion needs to be expanded ( grounds, assault course )

-I like the controls but get rid of the scenes where you have a scene and have to wait to regain control of lara to be able to "do your stuff " ( there's one with a boulder coming up from behind where you have to see a cutscene and then have to hurriedly do the moves when you regain control , I don't like this use of cutscenes ) . The interactive cinematics don't bother me much though.

- more exploration ( obviously this is tied in with first point : the levels need to be longer ) .

- bosses : I don't know but I think it's not required to have an end-of-level boss each and every time . You can also make a rather difficult puzzle at end of level to make it an "end of level " - difficulty . I think the concept of having bosses at end of a level is outdated to be frank .

- when you have vehice sequences either make them a lot shorter ( if we want a racing game we'll look elsewhere ) or less linear . I wouldn't mind driving a bike IN a level ( like was the case in TR2 and 3 and 4 ) , but the little driving around on bike scenes served no point, imo ( in the case of the Japan level it DID serve a point as that bike was "in level" ) .

All in all an excellent game though- far better than AOD- and the first one I enjoyed playing since TRC . Hope we don't have to wait an eternity for the next installment .

I am kind of glad actually because maybe Tomb Raider isn't ready for free roaming yet people seem to want levels in these games and if people are complaining about it being too-lenier at the moment, could you imagion if the next game was fully non-lenier they would be like Oh my god where do I go? -cue a frantic search on gamefaq and walkthrough salles doubled! :vlol:
I love the island idea and since I have joined this forum it has only seemed like a better idea thanks to all the posts about it.
I really hope it does happen one day but TR 8 will be mostly like Legend :D

I also love the island idea, ever since playing the first Far Cry game for the PC. Make the game more open but have a general object location indicator on a HUD/Radar that gives you some idea of where to head to or maybe a compass and old treasure map arrangement

Yeah alot of people like the free-roaming island idea, it would be great if Crystal could at least take hints and ideas form what people have said about it, maybe a level set on an island in the next game and have a seperate game for the whole island in the future :D but no-one really knows where Crystal will go next with TR  but I feel it will mostly be like TRL.

Could I please ask Crystal to replay The Lost Valley, Palace Midus and Sanctuary of the Scion in Tomb Raider to see how huge and absolutly brilliant the level designs are. I was playing some levels of TR yesterday, the designs of the levels were wonderfull and extremely varied, please can we have this type of level design in the next game :)

I would also like to know does anyone else think they should give Lara back her old weapons inventory?

I was playing TR and it didn't really bother me that the weapons and medi packs had to be selected through the menu system rather than being on her person. I also think the weapons themselves should be brought back as it was possible to get through all of TRL with only the pistols which are supposed to be the weakest weapon. In the old games her weapons were better because there was actually a difference between them in firepower where as in Legend her weapons are pretty much the same. They should add more veriety too. :p

I also think they should bring back the artifact based puzzles - like when certain relics fit into holes in the wall and you need to search every corner of the level for them and then bring it back to open some huge door. But Crystal could come up with larger and more complex ones than in TR1.

Good luck for TR8 Crystal I know it will be better than Legend :D

Yeh bring back the huge variety of weapons. I dont really care how unrealistic it is that she carries liike 15 weapons in her bag. Its TR its not realistic to start with.

- longer levels... this is just toooooo short
- puzzles... leavers and preasure buttons aren puzzles, im sick of opening dors i want TLR like puzzles, make it COMPLICATED
- dont tell me what to do... i didnt think for a second in game... i had everything said... i want to figure itt out by myself
- that red, blue and grey circles are anoying
- dont make everything so obvious, let us explore
- i wavt to go back through the game, do more explorig, not just runing forward
- no bosses... they are boring, i want to enyoj the game, not to die million times just to learn how to kill the boss, past games had great boss fights...legend is just... boring and stupid
- longer game
- more weapons
- i want to kill skeletons, undead creatures, animals, zombies, jeties, bigfoot, whatever, just no humans... theres too much of them.... bring back T-REX

- story is great, keep that

i finished this game in 2 days... i played last revelation 2 years
i want game to amuse me, to make me play it for years... if i cant figure it out now, i will in a month....
i couldnt finish TLR in 2 years i would break my head thinking... and i needed 2 years....
i passed legend in 2 days.... i dont remember thinking at all....

get it??!!

past games had great boss fights.

Yep, I'd love a boss fights like the Atlantis demi-giant, and Natla again! Or Seth! :D Wasn't really a boss though, you didn't get to fight him, just escape . He was still really cool though.

Yes the boss fights in Past Tomb Raider's were very Varied and challenging.
My favourite boss battle has to be with Sophia Leigh, killing her by electecuting her, now that was smart

what was wrong with the TRL boss fights?

also: bring back underwater levels.

puzzles must be logical, unique, and dynamic. NOT the old pull a switch and find a door, or search a room for an hour to find some damn key.

Keep the 2 gun limit.

animals are nice: but there is something only humans do: SHOOT BACK!!!

Here is a layout of the changes and additions I would like to see made to the mansion. I've also included the layout from Tomb Raider Legend so you can see all the changes without having to refrence the game. Please leave feedback. I love hearing what people think...even if they don't agree with me.

1. Camera issues.
The first problem is the arrow keys relate to Lara's position to the camera, not her left, right, forward and back. Depending on which way she is facing, you could press all of the these keys to go in the same direction. I prefer the old system, where forward in front of Lara, back is behind her, left and right are where her respective hands are. This caused Lara to fall to her death several times before I worked out what was going wrong. Climbing the Tesla tower would not have given me a moment's pause in the old Tomb Raider. In this version, I had to stop and think (sometimes repositioning Lara) before every jump. Not easily with the electric sparks!!!

The second problem is that the camera does not really track Lara properly. You cannot see the enemy she is fighting (in boss battles). More on this in the combat section.

2: Combat: I use two hands to make Lara fight. One for weapons control and the other for direction control. In this case, you need a third hand (or another person) to operate the mouse for you so that you can actually see what you're doing. When fighting Demon Amanda, most of the time I had no idea where she was (the camera was focusing somewhere to Lara's right). When I stopped moving to use the mouse, Lara got zapped.

The one combat feature I really liked in TRVI was streamlined to one move I never actually used (jump over enemy, boot kick). I like hand-to-hand combat (sometimes) in Tomb Raider. Particulary steath knock-out blows. It doesn't make sense that Lara only fights with guns, given that she's an expert in unarmed combat too.

The targeting feature needs work too. These problems occurred when Lara was standing on the end of the broken bridge. When I was fighting the sea serpent and it knocked her down (Lara was shooting at the bell), she would lock onto the sea serpent and nothing I did would make her choose the bell again. It wasn't until the sea serpent got tired of being shot and submerged that she reacquired the bell as a target. Also, the grappling AI in this section needs work too. Lara was facing the left bell and making it ring (the right bell had already been destroyed). As soon as the sea serpent turned to look at the bell, I fired the grapple. In most cases, Lara turned to the right and threw the grapple at the switch for the right bell. This did not end well, once the bell stopped ringing...... I'm not sure what I did, but I finally managed to get her to pull the left switch. After A LOT of failed attempts!!!

The only good thing about the mouse is it's good for manual aiming at a target. It doesn't have much use otherwise.

Bosses need a slower recovery time. With Amanda's pet demon, I had no time to grab the sword fragment. I managed to get it by fluke (randomly throwing the grapple).

Lara needs a better sniper rifle. I'm not sure the one I had was shooting far and accurate enough to hit it's targets.

3. Special Moves.
The commands for swan dive should go back to (hold) Walk, Jump+Direction.
The new command ((hold) Direction, Jump, then Crouch) was rejected by my computer most of the time with a loud beeping noise.

Likewise, handstand should return to previous commands too ((hold) Walk, Up).

I was also disappointed to hear that wall jump had been removed from the game.

4. What happened to the 15 level standard?
Why did we only get 8 levels?

5. Lara's home needs more rooms.
It didn't take me long to look over the entire mansion. It needs to be bigger. With ALL the rooms (guest rooms, bathrooms, kitchen, etc). It should be the kind of place you spend a long time exploring. This includes the outside too. Two locked gates was the only exterior part I saw.

6. Gold version please?
If this version of Tomb Raider is a winner, start making Gold games again.

7. Lara needs more medpacks.
Most often I found myself just barely winning boss battles (and occasionally regular battles with 30-40% of health (because I'd used up three (sometimes two or one, depending on how many I found before the battle) medpacks). In most of the boss battles, I lost because I ran out of health. If I'd had more medpacks, it would have been easier. And the ones on the ground (from the dead soldiers (Bolivia Redux) vanish after the checkpoint loads again!!! The pickups should stay there!!!

8. When do we get a flying vehicle?
This would be fun. And greater variety of vehicles. I love the bike, but it's the only vehicle in the entire game.

9. Savegames (for PC).
Sometimes (in the previous Tomb Raiders), I got to points where I really want to save so I can play that section over and over again without having to replay the whole level. In Tomb Raider II (for example), sometimes I just wanted to fight Dragon Bartoli. In this game, if you don't save at a checkpoint (I didn't), the whole level or part of it has to be replayed to get you to fight that enemy again.

10. Include the option to disable the on-screen text hints.
I liked them when I was learning how to use TRVII, but hated them once I'd got the hang of it.

11. Infinite environment travel (may be linked to flying vehicle).
If Lara moves outside the boundaries of the level, include a level code that allows her to keep moving over a looped room (say, flying over the ocean). She won't get anywhere, but it will feel like she is. And if Lara turns around and goes back, use the code to calculate the time/distance to return to the level.

12. A space level would be nice.
Spacesuits, jetpacks, zero gravity and stuff like that. I can't believe Lara hasn't done it before.

13. An underwater level without running out of air (something like Deep Sea Dive in TRV, but without a clunky suit (the controls didn't feel responsive enough) and the punctured air tank.

14. Computers that Lara can actually look at the screen and read the files (or you read the files, first-person perspective). Or pieces of paper, maps, etc that work the same way.

A fun training level could be one where you just have to race the bike over terrain in an endless loop, with optional baddies (so you can just race or race and fight if you want). But there'd have to be all those cool jumps that pop up now and then in TRVII.

They should have had a reaction for when Lara presses the button again (at Zip's request, after he says it's electroshock therapy for Alaistair).

The electromagnetic gun is also fun. Especially once I worked out how to shoot barrels of oil!!! That should be something they include more, gadgets you interact with, just for the fun of it. Not always for a reason though, sometimes just for fun.

They should do more logic-based puzzles. Not sprint, roll under closing door, 1 second late and you have to do it again.

I agree with "most" of what you said...but flying cars and outer-space? It's called "Tomb Raider" not "Space Invader". I enjoy a few urban levels here and there, but for the most part I like Lara rolling around in dirt in the jungle where she belongs. Where would she go in space...is there a tomb on the moon I don't know about? I agree that the mansion, not matter how beautiful, was a disappointment. It took too much time to do far too little. I also agree there should also be more levels. We got 7 levels total if you count that you play Boliva twice, that's just not enough. I do want to say however that I love what Crystal Dynamics has done for the game. This is that first Tomb Raider game I was counting down to since TR3. I love the new Lara, I love the new mansion...what I saw anyway, I love the new crew, Zip, Alister, Winston, I love the new engine, but most of all I love that they have made me excited for the first time in years. With TR7 out less than a month, I'm already counting down the days till TR8. Hope it's not too long.

This has most definatly been mentioned before but one couldn't be bothered to read all 32 pages lol. But what one wants to see is:

1 - The ability to access areas which are not mission related, i.e. On the Japan level in TRL one would look down at the ground and wish one could explore the buildings more etc. This would mean that after one has replayed the game 100 times there will most definatly still be more to explore.

2 - More animals. Would be good to have a nice attacking snake or an angry stray dog or two.

3 - A cheat to make Lara fly. This could also add to number 1 by increasing how far one can explore.

4 - NO SHINING/GLOWING/SPARKLING/TWINKLING/LIGHT EMMITTING ITEMS/OBJECTS OF ANY KIND! (Excluding lights)

5 - More Croft Manor! including: Gardens, Maze, Bike course, Kitchens, Dining room, Treasure room (NO T-REX HEAD PLEASE!), More secret passages, Weapons room, garage, bigger pool, deeper pool.

6 - Keep the TRL game engine, it was almost perfect!

7 - Improved AI in combat.

8 - More weapons. How about reviving some from the older TR games?

9 - Longer and more complex levels. But not boring.

Well thats it. If one has anymore thoughts one will post them. :ton:

The ability to turn off the chatting between Lara and Zip.(I really hate Zip's voice)

No hints

Bigger levels

No cutscenes

Make Lara move less ADHD

The ability to play the game in mass-market mode, and die-hard mode.

I just thought it would be a fun thing to see. And also to know if it could be done. I don't recall mentioning flying cars, though. I was imagining helicopters.

However, there is a way you could work it into the Tomb Raider plotline. Not all artefacts are in tombs or hidden vaults. Some have already been discovered and taken elsewhere (Spearhead in TRV, part of Excalibur in TRVII, Hand Of Rathmore in TRIII Gold, Seraph in TRII). What if there was an artefact that somebody (or an organisation) took into space to study? Lara would have to go there to get it from them.

I don't know if this has been suggested yet, but I recently saw a segment on a lifestyle show about a place that I think would be perfect for Lara!

Teotihuacan in Mexico has the 3rd largest pyramid in the world there, and no one seems to know much about it - the fun she could have there :)

I'd also really like to see her somewhere like New York, the contrasts would be amazing between her and a rough talkin New Yorker!

Personally, I would like to see a better lock on system for the PC. I.E. Right mouse to lock on like the Godfather and GTA. I had troublelocking on to enemies all game long...

Lucy_Croft
10-05-06, 07:01
The locking system was OK, I didn't have too much trouble with it, except when fighting the serpent in England, then it was a bit annoying when Lara kept aiming at his head rather than one of the belltowers.

I've probably already said this (or someone else has), but I can't find my post in this mass of pages! Anyway, I think there should be lots more creature enemies, BUT they should only attack YOU if YOU attack THEM. Like the monks in the Barkhang Monastery in TR2.

I agree with what you all say really, hopefully Crystal Dynamics will as well, and TR8 will be superbly done. Although the next one could be a remake of TR1, unless that is just the 10th anniversary game? Anywho, can't wait to see what they do. The game engine in TR:L was perfect, I loved the controls, so smooth and fluid. I really enjoyed the climbing sections, but maybe they should go on a tad longer, and be a bit more frantic at some points?
Back to some tombs! I like the idea of having an 'end of level' difficulty puzzle instead of a boss on some levels (can't remember who said that, but neat idea!)
Well, there's some things I wanted to add.

Punaxe
10-05-06, 08:53
I'm not sure if it has been posted yet, but something I found a little annoying is that Zip etc started talking AFTER just passing a checkpoint. I feel guilty everytime I'm forced to kill an animal in Tomb Raider. In TRVII (Nepal), when she reaches the grapple swing area in the temple, I just ran and leapt off immediately instead of trying to fight the snow cat (whatever it was).

I think they should have other (non-lethal) options to deal with wild animals.

1. Feed them. Have Lara carry a stash of animal food with her and toss them at the animals. This could also result in a cute animation when the animal finishes it's meal and begs her for more......

2. Have a weapon that scares them off. A high-pitched ultrasonic device or a explosive sound gun, something like that.

3. Tranquilizer darts. Give them a nap while Lara tombraids.

!st of all, thanks very much CD for bringing back to life one of my favorite games and caracthers to life again!

My desperate suggestions:

1- Massive levels! pls make levels bigger so besides the main story you can go explore and find secret places, this is one of the things I love more about tomb raider.

2- Pls, jet ski chase in Santorini, I know is from the movie but wont you just love to revive this playing it yourself? in swimming sute, and them go explore some ruins in the island, or go down the volcano!

3- Longer game, pls, it was good but it ended so fast!

4- original locales: hunted castle in scotia, water levels are so fabulous!

5- keep the motorcycle chases, also very good.

ok, if I think of something else, ill let you know.

Thanks and I hope you are listening

Just to limit the amount of threads i though i'd make this, a suggestion to CD to what to include in the next game:

-CD keep the Legend engine it was fun and brilliant, optimise it a little and it will be perfect.

-The Mansion was great and the inside brought back memories, The outside was a little small but nice, Please please in TR8 expand it to Gardens, a Maze, and more rooms. Also let us see the front of the house.

-Keep Zip and Alistar and the Headset. This was an excellent addition and I love the characters. Let Winston do a bit more though, put him on the headset.

-Make the Tomb alot more dangerouse with fewer mercenries, more high falls and fatal deathtraps.

-Could u Make some refrences to past TR's. The Natla crates were funny and a nice easter egg.

-Make the Levels longer.

-More animals, wild creatures roaming about.

-Most importantly keep up the standards of TRL and u wont go wrong.:)

I agree with everything here, and everything else people said, except, i think the shiny feature should still be there, if not we'd never grapple anywhere...haha... Bring back the fear factor! Make us feel scared! INVOLVE us in the story! Don't tell us what to do at every corner...

Crystal could we please have Laras old backpack and weapons selection back because although I liked the new system it was very frustrating to pick up medi packs and then try to heal while shooting at enemys.
About the weapons, if the old arsenal is brought back it would mean we would have to change weapons because certain guns have more firepower than others and so defeating harder enemies could mean you need a better weapon than the pistols - in Legend I found it too easy just to stick with the pistols the entire game :(

Keep the little touches like Laras one handed grab but maybe make the timing a little shorter for the grab on - it was too easy just to sit and press Y cause there was loads of time - make it quick like an instant reaction from the player to save Lara rather than a button press. :)

I think the reaction cut-scenes should be taken out they just don't fit in a Tomb Raider game - Instead have action moments - if Lara is on a swaying bridge across a rivene for example and one of the floor boards gives way, let the player choose what to do - like maybe she could grab on to the next board and continue across the rivene on the bridge or the bridge collapses and you have to grab on to a vine to save her then swing from one vine to the next over the rivene- I have always thought it would be cool in TR if the next action wasn't preanimated but there were a choice of things that could happen on the fly and with the next gen capabilities I'm sure it could be done :tmb:

Thats it if I have any more ideas I'll post them :D

Ryt a no this is a long list but here u go!!

-Loads more levels, including an underwater level
-Loads of weapons
-Hand to hand combat (Cool fighting style)
-More rooms in mansion, including an outside
-Some really cool and kitted outfits (buckles and belts)
-An event where you have to rock climb
-In the countryside of China where she gets into a fight and ends up in a bamboo forest and ends up fighting with bamboo
-Fighting with knives (like in the film Elektra)
-An interactive cut-scene at the start of the game where mercenaries break into her mansion and steal the artefact (sword thingy) from Legend and she has to get it back (Like in TR movie) Also in I'd like her to do that bungy thing like she did in the movie before the mercenaries break in at the start of the game and run around the walls and get them tangled up!! Then they steal the artefact.
-A race on vehicles where she has to get off before they crash( e.g. a train)
-Loads more different and exotic locations like Scotland (I know its not exotic lol) Africa, Thailand etc
-Loads more athletic and funky moves like handsprings, back-flips, forward-flips and all the same moves in Legend like diving
-A move where she can run up walls and get behind mercenaries and kick them into danger or kick them down and she can run up walls and back flip of it

And this is and idea for a plot or sort of story line type thing
>>Lara got an invitation to attend a masked ball right ..so she turns up in this absolutely GORGEOUS dress with at least £70 000 worth of diamonds round her neck and on her dress ..she she goes there because she has a hunch tht some1 that she is looking for a 'little chat' with(and by little chat I mean she wants to kill them..lol)and she meets this charmin and most handsome man u'll ever see and he takes her to a private/quieter area so they can talk. He gives her his business card with his contact details on it and that.
She doesn’t know he's the enemy but she finds out when he takes his mask off. She recognises his face when he broke into her mansion at the start of the game (if that wood b in TR8)So she says that she has to go.
But he grabs her arm ..but he doesn't know she’s clenching her fist ..and she turns round and punches him. He leans down in pain and she kick him in the ribs ..so she storms of and he tries to catch up with her but she walks to quick ..she storms out the door to the building and says to Alister (who's going to drive her home)"Alister lets go" as she gets into the car.
Then that could lead to the start of a Level where she goes to pay him a visit in his 'secret' hideout..lol!!!
So wat uz think of tht then?? :D :D :D :D :D

:o Are all these gonna be send to CD, because here is what i want for a TR7 Patch. :)

When i Save the Game and go back to the beginning, the Checkpoint saves over my Save Game that i made. Now thats stupid, its not even neccesary to make a Save Game. I want to Save whenever i want, let the Checkpoints stay, but the Save Games must stay aswell.

It’s a bit frustrating and weird to push two buttons for Lara to swim up and down, i want to use the Arrow keys to move in any direction i want.

They should include an insanely hard mode, really difficult to beat. For example, in this mode there may be ledges introduced or other areas/challenges where only the skilled and practised players will get the reward...I'm not one of them of course but I'd like to have to try over and over 'cos of the satisfaction you get when you (eventually) succeed. These challenges should NOT be accessible in easier modes.

In this mode the music and the yapping by zip must be OFF. Lara must be isolated, only her breathing, movements and environmental & combat sounds should be heard.

If you complete this level there MUST (please) be a secret level as a reward.

It'll never happen.
:)

Nice idea, belter :tmb: Hopefully they'll do that!
Although I'd like the option to have just Lara's breathing and environment etc (i.e. NO ZIP/MUSIC/HEADSET!!) to be available throughout the whole game, to recreate the magical sense of isolation that was achieved with TR1.

I agree. Maybe that's taken from AOD's little notebook, but in a way it's just an insult to our Tomb Raiding experience :P
The headset is a cool addition to get the story across, but... Don't tell me what to do please. Maybe in easy mode, maybe after 10 minutes, but definitely not instantly and by default.

Also, if CD is actually reading this - is THIS (http://files.noctifer.net/doomtombraider.jpg) (the bottom part) done with some kind of honouring in mind? :D

I am going to try and explain my earlier idea in in more detail. I have an idea how Crystal can make the next game more next-gen in terms of how the enviroment reacts around Lara.

Ok basicly I have always wanted a TR game to have enviroments which activate on the fly with no warnings or sign posts, they have there own AI if you like and know how to react in different ways. The example I am about to use is very basic but if Crystal could take this concept and work with it I am sure it would help the next TR to stand out from the crowd in the next generation.

Theres a long swaying rope bridge stretching far out over a riveen. This bridge has its own physics and weight limit. The are is an overgrown mess of plants and trees branching far out across the riveen, there are vines hanging from these trees all the way across to the other side with the rope bridge in between.
Heres what happens: Lara begins running across the bridge and it can react in its own way: examples

1:Some floor boards are loose and could fall away (in real time) at any moment. As Lara begins running forward, 6 floorboards begin to fall away infront of her so she leaps into the air grabs hold of the egde of the last board, pulls herself up and continues. It would happen again all the way across the bridge. Now what if the next time the AI reacted differently? say only 3 floor boards fell and she just had to make a small leap rather than a run & jump. This is the kind of thing that would make the game unpredictable and more challenging because it happens differently each time - thanks to the AI of the enviroment, its a simple concept and I am sure other action adventure games would cotton on if TR started it.

2:Lara begins to run along the bridge again but this time - completely in real time remember and on the fly - the bridge begins to fall away, what does she do? Well she leaps over the rope barrier and grabs hold of one of those vines and begins to swing from one to the next over the riveen - while the bridge falls into the rushing rapids below!. Do you see how effective this would be, cause the time before the bridge simply lost some floorboards but this time the whole thing collapses - again this is all due to the AI Crystal could incorparate into the enviroment itself - which could certainly be done with the Xbox 360 and PS3 :D

3:After passing the half way point on the bridge, it begins to buckle under Lara's weight - she quickly runs and grabs the last board - there would be gaps at certain parts of the bridge so she would jump over that and grab the board - before the whole thing snaps in two. Lara's half of the bridge is now hanging over the other side of the riveen. Useing the boards as a ladder Lara would climb up them to the top of the riveen and admire how she just acomplished an obsticle without useing a boulder and pressure plate! :D

I love this idea and its only very basic at the moment. Just think about it that was three different ways the enviroment reacts - again thanks to the AI - and three totally different solutions. I hope Crystal sees this cause its what I feel TR needs - you know that sense of "God what will happen next?" and the best thing is if it was done like this you'd never know whats coming next! :D

Tell me if you like the idea or not. And does anyone else have any ideas how the next TR can be a next-gen game with its gameplay not just its graphics?
(I have too much time on my hands at the moment cause I've finnished college until after the summer - thats how I came up with this :) )

I agree that physics will indeed be an important use of CPU power in the next gen consoles, but I think there are some things to keep in mind.
The bridge partly falling apart and Lara having to use it as a ladder sounds just great. And because it also will be just great, that's how it'll be done. It would actually be a waste of "AI" as you call it if this would only happen once every ten times you walk over the bridge, and it would be a shame not to see it. Also, having the to jump and grab the last piece of wood will probably put so much force on it, that if done realistically, it will fall as well and Lara falls :P But that's a detail.

I think "random" is the word you're looking for. Having random (but pre-set to some extent of course) pieces fall off the bridge will make it much more interesting the next time you play it, you'll never know what happens. Good idea :tmb:

I think we are on the same wave length Punaxe :wve:
I realise theres lots of little details to be ironed out but I can't help but feel excited if this is the new direction TR was to go in :tmb:
The random thing was actually what I was trying to say, I don't want it to happen out of thin air - that would create too many frustrating moments. :D
I agree the physics should be used more in the next game but I hope its more creative - not pulling things around like in Legend :)
The grapple should be used more in puzzles too I think.
I think its tough to come up with puzzle and enviroment designs - its all well us fans saying we want huge levels but Crystal are the one who have to design them :D

I've been reading this post for the last two weeks now. (Lurking in the shadows) I agree so much with those that say lara has been watered down. Yes, legends plays so beautifully and fluidly. But where is any complexity, intrigue, mystery, suspense, danger, difficulty or just jaw dropping awe??? I can't go anywhere but the intended path, everything feels like a rush to get it done. No exploring, no floundering around lost or confused. It just doesn't have the TR feel. She me something to be afraid of, let me do it myself instead of telling me how. If I fail let her die. And for god's sake, show me her death! That used to be half the fun of screwing up in a TR game! :vlol:

To save the next TR game, we need much larger environments, the ability to go anywhere in it, much more diffiucult tasks and puzzles and traps. Let us figure things out instead of giving us answers with movie clips and headsets with voices. Let us get lost. Let us kill anything that moves. Bring on monsters, animals, fantasy creatures. Lessen the human enemy, too many in legends. Keep the mythology, the legends, the history. It feels right in a TR game. Keep a storyline that actually goes somewhere and has an end.

BTW, the controls feel perfect, very good job with these. Couple of things, bring back her roll/flip. It was my favorite way to turn on an enemy I was running from and all of a sudden attack! And it's one of her original signature moves, right up there with the handstand and swan dive. Bring back her inventory, yes it could interupt the gameplay a little, but I miss being able to carry and choose from every weapon in the game.

Now hurry up and bring us TR8... hopefully not long after the PS3 launch... ;)

Hmm..

-More and harder puzzles. Make us use our brains!!

-Headset is cool, but it is missing the 'you're all alone' feeling. Maybe when entering a deep dark tomb she falls and looses the headset for a few levels.

-Dino's! Big green T-rexes and fast red raptors!!! Other big monsters, like yeti's demons or stuff like that would also be cool.

-Maybe a scary tomb (without headset) with undead monster, maybe even vampires (note: scary undead ala Wolfenstein, not amusing chickenskeletons).

-More weapons. Just pistols and (Semi) automatic weapons won't be enough. Magnums! :D

-More and bigger fight scenes. The battles against those mercanaries where cool! But those battles were short and few.

-Make Lara less perfect. Beatiful, young, superintelligent.. It's all al little too much.

-Gardens for the mainson.

And I agree on the -misses the exploring- feel.. Well, not missing, but its a one way road. More keys, levers and doors :D

Anyway.. Just my humble opinion.

my advice:
- definitely loooonger, 2 or 3 more levels!!!
- make the puzzles more complex, and here and there the classic key puzzle, not just the plattform puzzle
- more traps, more challenging passages where you are killed
- more enterable environment, alternative ways, or simply 'nothing'- rooms in which you get lost
- no headset, it feels like Splinter Cell, and that's what TR is not supposed to be! I agree with Baslakor, you really miss the classical 'you're alone feeling'!
and all the things that have been mentioned before...

Less "Fashion Show" and more substance.

The whole outfit thing is "cute", but I prefer
a longer and more challanging game.

TR8 should keep me busy and fighting until
TR9 comes around. Leave me bored for too
long I might lose interest in following the game...

Perhaps the new marketing stratogy is to attract
new users with less thought to the older fans....

She doesn't need to lose it. I guess there won't be radio reception in caves anyway, so a dead silent headset in a cave would be more realistic and could bring a rythm between exploration in solitude (i.e. caves) and exploration with funny chatter (outdoor or city setups).

-More and bigger fight scenes. The battles against those mercanaries where cool! But those battles were short and few.

Not quite to my taste, but for these I'd have the suggestion to offer an alternate climbing or sneaking path around enemies.

I'd definatley say keep Zip and Allister, they made this game entertaining and some of the things they said were hilarious! I loved the idea of the headset too, it gave you the idea of distant backup if you needed it.

All I could suggest is longer levels, or more levels, and maybe more variety in the creatures that Lara fights. In this one there was really only jaguars and animals like that, but I wanted to see gorillas and eagles, like in the old TR games. They'd be good.

Oh, and maybe a nice T-Rex thrown in there wouldn't be so bad ;)

Here's a post that I made in another thread, but it's also pertinent here:

---------------

I think there would be a quite simple solution to satisfy the average gamer and the elite puzzle solver. What I think CD does not make enough use of is the fact that the game has different difficulty settings.

So far, the difficulties just control how much you hurt enemies and how quickly lara is hurt herself and how much stuff (medpacks, ammo) she finds on her way.

But there are many ways different from that, which could make the game harder in hard (or medium) mode.

For example more of those crumbling ledges or rolling boulders with increased difficulty. Less spoling comments from ZIP. Lack of camera flights which show the way out. Display of the blue circle for grapple jumps and the yellow hand icon as well as less prominent glare on metallic icons.

I think you can put up the hardest puzzles and make hints with camera flights. One thing about puzzles is that they're far more easy as long as you know that you're on the right track. Adding a cut scene or camera flight to say "yes, nicely done, and btw, there is some interesting spot which you might explore" can scale difficulty up and down to the hear's desired (and game setting).

Or (also camera flight) stuff like the ole tombraider turn three levers and a door somewhere opens. Well, just let it open somewhere and let expert-level players find it themselves.

It's really easy to make things harder or easier, they just need to to it.

I think it doesn't **ss off too many people if things are too difficult on a difficult setting as long as you can change. But I think it's an offense to be presented baby easy stuff in hard mode ... kinda says "yes my dear, we know that you have mushrooms for a brain ... and now open your mouth, here's a another spoon with yummy yummy stuff".

In fact I would like to see three difficulties. Climbing difficulty (crumbling ledges, no hands, etc.), puzzle difficulties (giving away riddles over intercom, etc.), battle difficulty (the one that's currently the difficulty control). I would set that to high/high/low since I had no fun in the fighting sections.

1. Include the music related to TR1,2&3, that would remind us of good old days.
2. Include the tombs like in the last revelation, this is what tomb raider is all about.
3. Expand the Lara home, like including race track.
4. Puzzles should be damn good, more than tough comparing to TR3.
5. Game should make us jump from our chairs, scarryyy...
6. And plz dont include any character like kurtis, it make us jealous.
7. Last dragon should be bigger than God OF War.
8. This time try to include jungle stages, like in TR3, that would be superb. Name of the stage could be Back To Jungle.
9. Zip should not open his mouth, sometimes he is allowed. Let us do by ourself.
10. Most important game should be long. It should at least take 20hrs to complete it.

* The best aspect with the classic Tomb Raider games were always the level DESIGN. Now in Legend, this has become the worst aspect. That's (one of the reasons) why the game didn't feel like it should. (Re-) start the adventure! Stop with the old-school, narrative, ONE route only stuff. Such irony... I've played the old games for years, but I still haven't seen and done everything. It adds both a sense of realism and replayability, and that feels great!

* The headset is ok, though it doesn't add any interactivity or gameplay. Some felt it sucked and others liked it. Make it an option, there you have interactivity! Great suggestion to make it lose (at least some) connection in deeper grounds.

* The bike sequenses felt fake, and everybody knows it. If a vehicle is to be included in the next game, better incorporate it into a regular level that can be EXPLORED on foot as well. It's too easy to spot things that were designed spesifically for just a few appearances in a game. If it's not created for the basic design of the game, it stands out. Same with eventual scares. Just take a look at the bear in Tomb Raider 1: It's just there. It leaps at you around a corner, without scary music or anything that makes you realize that this is THE moment it was SUPPOSED to be. True moments like that luckily aren't the same as a fake, fully staged ghost train ride. Players gets immersed in both characters, locations and story when we forget we're playing a game. When we forget that we're tapping buttons, sitting in front of a screen. Legend also has too many (unskippable) movie sequences (being a short game) that abort the flow of the gameplay. And don't get me started on the "interactive" movie sequences with colored controller-buttons all over the image. Yuck! This truly isn't Tomb Raider. Make anther game called "GTA: San Andreas Club Dancing" instead, please.

* Get rid of all the obvious hints and help. It only made me feel like I should've felt stupid. Not good.

* Kick out the humans, bring back the wild life. If undead aliens is the enemy type DOOM is known and loved for, wolves and lions were the enemy type TOMB RAIDER ...was... known and loved for. Damn-it. I love real animals and can't even hurt a fly, but I am also someone who knows the difference between real life and fiction. Would I end up shooting anything that's breathing at all because of this recommendation? Don't think so, but it seems as if "worried" developers does. Gimme a break. Also: I don't want to SEE so much humans alive and roaming. I want to just feel the eerie presense of their (native) ghosts and spirits again. Just play the Peru levels of the original TR and realize how spooky they felt, with the only sound of wind blowing through the UNDERGROUND RUIN CITIES (most words in caps are meant as HINTS. You'd think that at least Toby Gard gets it..)

* The music? Not necessary. But this is the 2000s, and it seems inevitable I'm afraid. Once again - play the classics and see what I mean. The second TR had a fair amount with great balance. Sometimes in Legend I almost felt like I had to rush through a scene just to get away from a tedious, hurrying soundtrack that was left with (dissappearing?!) dead bodies after a scene with shooting and action. I just wanted to explore the scenery afterwards, but the techno music just kept on playing. As if there were anything at all to explore... Yeah, great graphics, but I get that in a movie theatre as well. Wasn't I (supposed to be) playing a game? An anticipated sequel to the beloved Tomb Raider series? One that "everybody" (some actually liked Angel of Darkness, you know) hoped would redeem the franchise?..

* As someone else on these boards expressed, I couldn't care less for Lara and her oh-so interresting back stories and embarassing personal life. To be completely frank. "In the days", tomb raiding the REAL way was the games' exitement, and Lara was just like a perfectly original character to be cast. Nothing forced for more, nothing less. Now that you've seen the Hollywood movies (that somehow miss the whole point, since they're based on GAMES) and fleshed out Lara to wast lenghts, perhaps it would be in order if you flesh out the game as well, huh, Crystal Dynamics?

* So... Gameplay. Well. You don't and cannot exactly hold on to your fingertips anymore as a player, so to speak. I remember when I used go let go of the ctrl-button, Lara would let go of the ledge as well. Talk about being in control! In Legend, if I accidentally press the red button on the controller, she lets go. Or if I don't do as the screen tells me to (press the yellow one), she'll let go. Sure she shimmy and swims and climbs the ladders faster with that button, but in these next-gen times you'd think the analog direction-button could do that just as good! Does it even seem logical that in order to LET GO of a high swinging rope so you can GRAB ON to a cliff, all you have to do is press the JUMP-button? Not to mention... that rope and that cliff is now the lonely only way to get any further.

* A mansion without an outside sure is going back to the basics, Crystal D. How do you even expect to succeed in the business with competition being games like Oblivion and what not? The day Tomb Raider truly becomes the spectacular thing it started out to be, will be the day the developers set some fair and compeeting goals for their game. Impress us!

Please realize that this is only the bad stuff about the game. I think much is great, but I really had to exorcise some dissapointed demons. Keep the graphics. It'll be even better by the next game, no worries there.

So for the next installment I wish for a Lara, just like this one with her visible grenades (isn't that a bit dangerous in the line of fire, though?), grapple device, brown boots and muddy legs. As long as I am not playing one more game that's completely like an oversized tutorial, I'll be happy with the all the other improvements as well.

Follow up with a BIGGER (not necessarily "longer", but yeah, that too, in playing time terms), DARKER (what moods are concerned), DIRTIER (literally, bloody, challenging) Tomb Raider. One whitout "Lara Croft" in the title. If you dare.

I was playing Legend and decided to use mainly combat and the ariel assault mode along with the usual shooting, I was testing whether or not the intigration of the two was good. My findings were that,

*The shooting over shadows the melee obviously but the ease of the enemies and the infinite ammo of the pistols means that foes are easily overcome from a distance. Make the shooting more advanced!

*I felt the ariel assault mode was rather flashy however its not effective in a TR game. I think a more realistic combat system should be implimented like Indiana Jones or Buffys because both had a realistic and deep fighting system. By the way I don't want TR to BE Indy or Buffy but to use maybe elements from both games to create a more enjoyable fighting style for Lara.

In Indy he fights with his fists the - A button on Xbox was for his right hand while the X button was for his left - the player then could press A X A and Indy would unleash a right hand jab - left hand punch and right hand uppercut - the combat was incredibly effective for close quarter fighting and there were a ton of different combos for the player to choose from. :D

Buffys combat is actually even better than Indys because she can punch and kick her enemies. The same rule applies A on the Xbox is kick and X is punch - the player could press A A A and Buffy would unleash a kick to the shin - kick to the upper left side of her enemy and a kick to the right of her enemy - again this was incredibly effective and also really fun! :D
The punches and kick could also be combined for more effective slaying!

I think a secondary combat system of this nature would better suit a TR game than the already implimented ariel assault and weak melee moves. :(
I don't want the shooting to be scrapped or anything but take out the ariel assault and add in a fighting system instead, that way the combat could be more involved in tight spaces rather than constant blasting!

Good luck for TR8 Crystal! :)

No you can't criticize the controls in Legend anyway! They are very fluidly and smoothly. Yes, I agree, the original control was special to run, then jump and finally press the ctrl-button, yes that was coll. But this is out-dated today, the next-generation works otherwise. I think CD have made the best controls you could only get for Next-gen TR! Particurlarly after the catastrophe of AoD, no the controls are quite perfect and they should keep them as they are!

^ Nope. When Tomb Raider 1 was released, it's gameplay was NEW and original compared to what came before it. And you had more control with it. Really OLD games have that "automatically hang on to lenges" stuff, then came Tomb Raider 1 with something more involving and great (it's really what made the game), and now, ten years later, we have the OLD approach again. Um...
But I'm definately NOT critizising the smooth animation and fluidly gameplay in Legend. I just think that it's nothing in comparison. You simply can't lose grip in it. You have to actually PRESS a button to LET go. Nah.

Somewhere around page 17 I stopped reading this thread, so I don't know if any of this has been posted before, but anyway:

- Keep what was in Legend in terms of game play (headset, controls, vehicle levels, location types, etc.) and the music and add to this:
- Longer levels, actual traps, enemies that are dangerous, riddles that require more thinking and all variations of these that have already been mentioned.
- More interactive or larger mansion, or (best) both. I know no previous mansion was as interactive as this one, but once you have all the secrets it's quite boring.
- Insert an option to reset the rewards so that that I can have fun looking for them when I play the game again.
- Insert a "Return to last checkpoint" option.
- Make the handbook clear on where loading a saved game will take you. It took me a few minutes to figure this out because the (german) handbook sucked.
- I could certainly do without those interactive cutscenes because they're very annoying. If they didn't look so damn good, I'd be openly protesting against them and would want to have them out again. So if there are any, make them look good.
- Either no train at all, or a train that looks like a train. Not some piece of <insert your favourite word that would get censored by this forum software> like the one in Kazakhstan
- Vehicle levels with more variety as mentioned by everyone else
- Decrease the boss-fight to normal play ratio
- Keep the headset, stop it helping me unless I want it to

Some more technical stuff that I'm sure will not come, but which I'd still like to have:
- A level editor
- A Mac OS X version (including PPC), right from the start and same price as PC version.
- Official documentation for the file formats used

I thoroughly enjoyed TombRaider - Legend except for one very annoying thing. Once I began the game and unlocked some of the outfits I learned that to unlock the Bikini outfits I would have to complete the entire game plus the time trials. To me, that makes the bikinis the grand prize of the outfits. Dreaming of swimming Lara through the flooded Peruvian caves in her bikini I battled to unlock the bikinis only to discover once I had that they are UNWEARABLE in the game! It felt like a :cen: slap in the face! Whose bright idea was it to make EVERY outfit wearable in the game except the GRAND PRIZE, the bikinis, which can only be worn in the Croft Manor? -Make the game heaps longer
-Keep the Headset, but you can turn it off and on

-More Outfits!
-Make the croft manor bigger, and make an outside
-Have more vehicles, like speed boats, push-bikes, and cars
-make her hair longer
-make the animations better and more feminem
-Make the puzzles different and harder as the game goes on
-Bring back sprint
-Make Anaya come back and having a her as a support character for some missions
-Do more flashbacks in the storyline, where you can play as Lara when she was 18, with her father, and playing as Lara when she was 9

Just two cutscenes per level, one at the begining, one at the end.

Why??

I love seeing many movies of Lara.

If you don't like waiting for the movie to finish (maybe because you are in a hurry and are only playing to complete the game and find all the secrets) you can always skip the movie. There is an option when you press 'start'. There you can skip the cutscene.:)

Someone said I should post this here as well, so I will.

Dont copy Prince of Persia

In Prince of Persia the levels are linear, but the way the puzzles are solved is interesting. The prince can run up walls matrix style. Lara will never do this, well I hope not anyway. The prince can also use his chain, hit switches on the walls, use his dagger stable himself from after running along a wall, run along a wall and then hold on to a ledge, and then jump to the other side. What can Lara do in this kind of environment? Grapple, and move forward.

Tomb Raider has its own style. Please don’t copy Prince of Persia. Linear levels work well for this game because the character can interact with them in a whole number of interesting ways. Lara can not.

Plus the prince of persia thing has already been done, and milked to death. We have had enough of that. Please make a Tomb Raider game, and not just a Prince of Persia with a female character who has a PDA, a head set, who can go to modern day cities.

What I'd like to see:

- Option for "classic" controls. They didn't need fixing and would work fine in the new game for the most part.
- Fewer bosses. Tomb Raider was never about bosses, at least not a lot of them. So many times in Legend you end up in a circular room fighting a frustrating boss of some type which is just tedious and not fun to play. Isn't it time developers came up with another way to end a level other than just giving us yet another boss?
- Less linear levels with the ability to freely explore. It was always obvious where Lara was supposed to go because if you weren't meant to go somewhere, you simply couldn't grab something or there was an invisible wall preventing you. Also, by looking for the poles on the side of the walls or the handholds, it was easy to figure out where Lara was supposed to go.
- No more "interactive" cut scenes, and fewer cut scenes in general. I found time after time just as I was getting into a level, a cut scene would come along that would completely take you out of the game. Interesting idea, completely failed in execution. It was like playing Dragon's Lair all over again.
- Revamp or remove the driving sections. It was like playing a bad 1980's driving/shooting arcade game but just with 3D graphics.
- More puzzles. Less action. Tomb Raider should be more of an adventure and exploration game, not an action shooter.
- Option to remove the headset dialogue
- Option to remove the shiny/flashy bits. Let us figure things out.
- Tangable rewards for finding secrets such as unlocking a bonus level or opening up previously unaccessable sections of the mansion. New outfits? Come on, this isn't a Barbie dress-up game.

Cheers.

Less linear levels are good, but there's a caveat: the player must know where they need to go at all times, without being hit over the head about it. Getting lost and going 'what do I do now?' is no fun.

More levels.

More exotic locations like Ghana and Bolivia. <3

Longer levels. The last two were far to short. Don't rush the game, we can wait. Take your time to make it a fufulling experience.

Less influence by the camera on the contols. A couple of times I to my death as I jumped backwards, not left because the camera was on the wrong angle.

Better PC menu contols. I had to load Japan and quit out tonight as I couldn't escape from the difficulty/outfit screen back to the main menu.

Option to turn on/off tips in game (ala Battlefield).

More varity in enemies; humans, one cat (skins don't count), and one dog is boring.

Less Crash Bandicoot: have the levels make sense, but altered to make it fun.
The vents in Kazakhstan were absurd; the cable jumps were all most identical and repeated way to much. At least use different props/brushes for each one.
On the other hand, The power up puzzle was very well done.

More Thief: The levels where you can go anywhere (while the goal was seldom out of sight) and made sense, the feeling that the world was alive around you (in urban areas at least) the atmosphere that permeated the level.

Greater atmosphere. Use everything to enhance the mood; the colour of the lighting, the ambient background track, Lara's stance and voice, to set the scene. Totality of Effect is the prhase I'm looking for.

Drop the interactive cut scenes, but enhance the player's ability to move like that all the time, if possible.

Keep Lara a classic British girl. Keep true to the games, more than the movies.

Keep the deep interwoven stories (I think Alistar is correct - everything is connected), but don't bog down the game.

Make the game moddable so that community can make their own levels, create new weapons, enemies and outfits (well maybe not the last one, we know where that leads if people have open slather). Look what moddability Has done for Half-Life; people are still making content for the original game (or at least porting over their old mods to Source) eight years after it came out. It's also a good way to find talent if you're looking to hire.

Hi!

This is a list of what Italian fans would like TR8 to have more than Legend is:
(this list is from the Tomb Raider official Italian forum )

- Longer and more complex levels. Huge rooms like the old TR’s ones are a must! Levels must give us a sensation of loneliness, desolation and hugeness… They mustn’t be linear but labirynthic.
- The whole game must be longer and more difficult! More traps (in old TRs’ style). Puzzles must make us to think, think a lot! There must be more animals to challenge and enemies should be more difficult to kill!
- Puzzles based on physics must be combined with the old TRs’ ones. There must still be some keys, artefacts and levers to find!
- Zip and Allister must participate to the story, but they mustn’t give clues about how to solve puzzles! Otherwise, it could be added the option “Helps”, that if activated gives helps from Zip and Allister.
- There mustn’t be any signal that tells us we can interact with a certain item (like the shining in the objects that can be hooked with grappling, or icons that shows what actions to do or how can you interact with a certain item)
- Lara’s home must include an outside area. Her mansion is so big, so it worth to visit it from outside too. Gardens, fountains, assault courses (with vehicles too) and outdoor swimming pools! It would be nice if we can interact with Zip, Allister and Winston somehow! There should be bathroom, kitchen and garage too (like in the films), and trophy rooms, with all the artefacts collected by Lara along her past adventures.
- More vehicles to drive! Not only motorbikes!
- FMVs! It was very nice to see them at the end of the levels.
- Increased resistance underwater (more oxygen) and levels where you have to swim a lot, like underwater temples. Keys used to control Lara underwater should be reviewed! There are a lot of keys to use. Jump + direction keys like in old TRs are fine.
- Wider range of weapons.
- Evocative music that make you to jump up from the chair and sounds that maintains the atmosphere and the sensation of loneliness and hugeness in better way.

Please Crystal Dynamics consider it!!!

Do you see any Prince of Persia similarities? Do you think it’s a good idea to use this game as a grounding for Tomb Raider?

I see also similarities to Soul Reaver 2 - Legacy of Kain. Lara jumps (not so say like a Monkey) like Raziel. Is she a undeath?
She had alway jumped extremly. She had power in her arms and legs. But I don't like the way she move or jump in TR 7. No one can jump like this. The next Tomb Raider (8) she will fly throu the Levels and you will finish it in one hour... or what.

1. allow Lara to deviate from the path. replaying the levels aren't fun because your just playing the level over, the same exact way as you did the first time on the exact same path. I mean its fun because the second time u know what your doing and you can breeze right through it but at least add lots of secret areas so that although we know the level we are always getting to know it better and deeper and finding lots more secrets.

2. let lara climb EVERYTHING! the great thing about tomb raider, and what made it tomb raider in the first place was that you looked around, and everything in your environment was interactive. you could climb any surface that was in your reach. it was like a virtual playground. The same cant be said for legend. There are invisible walls and surfaces that should be climbable but aren't. Add more layers, CLIMBING IS FUN!!! so is jumping. add more jumping puzzles. this is all very specific to the tomb raider series. BRING THEM BACK!

The game was supposed to have a realistic physics system, but the grappling hook didn't work properly - it only attached to certain shiny metal objects. Kazakhstan took place in a massive factory full of metal, but the grappling hook wouldn't attach to any of the walls or scenery.

Has anyone played a demo of Lost Planet on 360? This also has a grappling hook, but this hook can attach to any surface in the game world. Anything at all. If the grappling hook in TR8 could do this it would be great. Lara could scale entire mountain surfaces by use of her grappling hook. And instead of 'last chance grabs' Lara could fire her grappling hook to hang onto ledges if she falls. Having a hook being able to attach to any surface also creates numerous new puzzle and platform situations.

Bring back the original mansion. The movie version is not so good.

I really feel Lara should just be the person we take on the adventure and we see her personality that way. I am not really that intersted in her personal life to be honest. I want an adventure, not framed for murder, or betrayal of her friends, who her friends are, where her mother is, what house she owned/inherited, if she is an alcoholic or not what clothes she wears. If i wanted that kind of thing I would watch sunset beach.

Although the music in the mansion confirms i am watching sunset beach.

Also Lara's character is kind of annoying in this game, as well as Zip and Alister.

Music wise, we dont need music in the game. Have music more like Tomb Raider 1. Little bits of music here and there just for atmosphere.

carlsbadd
19-05-06, 16:40
Things I liked to see expanded.

First off the music was great, I would like to have the sound effects expanded to help give you clues. Like if you reach a dead end you might hear water running or machinery to give you a clue that your destination is close.

Non Lineral levels please !!more exploration and different ways to complete levels with different rewards.

Headset off mode, like others have stated. No matter how good a sat link is there is no way it is going to work 100 feet underground.

Here is my wishes for the next game:

- More levels, the game was too short
- Where did the Tomb Raider music go? The music was OK, but make it more like in the first TR games!
- Didn't really like the mansion, get back the old one, but with Zip's office in it :p
- Bring back the traditional film sequence when you enter the game, like in TR3, with the meteorite and all that... The one in TRL is just like in the TR movies... This is the game, not the movie :p
- And, the most unlikely to happen: I want Judith Gibbins to do Lara's voice :D

And it should have a quick kills feature simmelar to the ones in BloodRayne 2 just to make combat more fun (you could be shooting one dude and antother comes up behind you-turn round push the specified button and lara takes care of it, Or at least a speed kill system like the one in PoP:T2T

So much hatred, lol. I thought Lara's voice was a vast improvement. I agree about the isolation thing though. It should be like Metal Gear where you can choose, "I loved the originals" or "I loved Legend" at the start of your game and get less or more voice interruptions and hints.

so please dont make the games close to the movies,.. they are nice, but not so nice as the games,.. so better use the games as propper references instead of the movie,... (the house is like in the movie)

wider levels,.. different ways to solve the same puzzle,.. or how can i say different ways to get somewhere like in tomb raider 3...

no more animals, but monsters,.. i am enviromentalist, and dont think lara needs to kill an animal to be a good explorer,.. i think she better just kill mercenaries, monsters, but no endangered specias like tiger in the india, or jaguars in nepal,...

conect the games,... if she was once in nepal, make her say something about nepal,.. like long time no see,.. and i say nepal because of the 2nd part, not because of the kids fmv....

also it could be nice to make her less comercial... c'mon the dialagues from the flash back were kid like and quite stupid,.. c'mon lara, you slum....? oh c'mon, she got attitud since she was a kid,.. the chronicles and the 4th showed that,...

BIG plus,.. in the flash back we played as the traditional outfit,..COOL,.. when will we play as the 16th lara like in the chronicles,.. ?? so more flash backs if able...

why are lara friends,.. allof them such a great shape bodies?.. was there a casting to get into college?..

more links to the past pls,...

My Idea's for TR8

-longer levels
-levels not as linear
-keep the headset
-more tombs
-exotic locations
-no more bosses
-make the mansion bigger (outside, more rooms, lots more riddles, ect)
-don't make it so easy
-more puzzles
-keep the extra's section (character profiles, outfits, cinematics, object models, ect)
-more outfits
-make the cinematics watchable without having to load them everytime (play all selection)
-make winston, alister and zip do more in the mansion
-more flashbacks
-keep the same amount of cinematics
-keep lara's new voice
-keep lara's new look

I have alot more ideas just can't think of them right now:)

Winston just stand still at the fireplace. For God's sake make the characters in the Mansion move:hea:

Winston should at least do something. Move around, dust the room, read a book, whatever.

Given that Zip and Alistair had a certain amount of preprogrammed responses, I'm surprised Winston has none. Zip has more than Alistair, though. Everytime Lara walks up to him, he says something new. At least, until he runs out.

That is something I would have fixed. I would have given Zip an seemingly endless list (a lot) of things to say to Lara so you'd spend a long time getting to the end of them. And then have them start again. I'd also programme in a "random" factor, so they're like pulling names out of hat, until they're all used up (and not to use the same one twice until they run out). I think I just heard that actor wake up screaming........ :D

They should make a number of "activity" animations for Lara. Ordinary things for her to do in the mansion and game levels. Stuff like make a sandwich, bake a cake, read email and/or books, straighten pillows/sheets on bed, wash hands, watch tv, etc.

Use your imagination.

The most important one I'd like to see is lying on beds or sitting in chairs.

You could go up to an object, press interact and have Lara do something with it. For kitchen animations, you would have to be presented with an option list: what kind of consumable do you want Lara to make?

Then I suggest you turn off your computer and play with your Barbie babes. Or just go and play The Sims.

This is an action game, remember? It used to have some sort of adventure part, but it never included straightening pillows anyway..

I want more of those Sea Monsters in Avalon that was at England.

I hope they make a reason for why Amelia couldent return to Earth, maybe the Sword fell in pieces when she went there.

I hope then Lara and Amelia can return to Earth, because Lara has the Ghali Key.

I hope they make a story between the Connection of the Gate and the Sword because Lara said its way Older then the time of Artur and that Egytian Queen.

I hope they make a connection between that Demon and Amanda's Stone aswell.

~ Make the difficulty settings affect some more things, not just how quickly Laras health diminishes. Like others have mentioned. Hard: No hints, no shiny surfaces, no lame comments via the headset, more enemies, more beasts, maybe less surfaces Lara can grab onto, more breakables, more scary moments... the possibilities are endless.

~ Make every displayed object actually interactable. Stones that you can not step onto are no fun.

~ Please keep Autograb for those who liked it but make it an option, not a must! While I liked it I can also understand those who would've loved to have a key to make Lara grab.

~ Offer multiple solutions for certain problems. Like how to get from A to B. Like it has said previously: Less linear can work wonders!

~ Think of bored gamers who'd try anything new. Like killing the Entity at Kasakstan or "killing" the dummy at Peru. Make something happen in such cases. Please!

~ Mansion as already mentioned: More rooms, a huge outside, a museum with artifacts from past games, a carpark and maybe finally something do to for Winston. That guy is bored out of his stiff pants!

~ The idea with clothing influencing Laras performance is brilliant!

~ The levels do not necessarily need to be longer, as I think this lowers the replay value. Who would really want to play through the long first two thirds of a level only to try something new within the last third. See Kasakstan. I still don't have gold because that huge long motorbike section is preventing me from going there too often. So rather have more levels to make the game longer.

~ Things to discover just for the fun of it. Things that lead you nowhere specific but that are just exiting in themselves. Like a junglepath that is a bit harder to find and that leads to some small ruin nearby where Lara can activate something, too. Make her find/earn useful things there, maybe. Things that you can do without, but that help if you have found them.

~ A jeep. Please let us drive a jeep!

Oh they did, they even made a compilation video of it :p Thing is, sometimes she just dropped into the void. Bolivia for example... They just hadn't made that part of the level where she would end up. Then, a fade-out is a quick solution.

I agree with everything except:

-NO Maze, to cartoony and hard to make it look good.

-Puzzles that dont make since: *Push a button here and something alse happenes somewhere alse* is not fun at all!

-No hidden awards, they are out of fashion. Do something alse, something original.

-Dont cut the number of mercenaries, make them smarter and add a hand-to-hand combat system. But stay clear of the AOD HDH system, it was rubbish.

But on the other hand, keep up the good work Crystal Dynamics:D

I agree with u there but I just think there was too much of it in legend. The other games I didn't even try to collect secrets but sometimes I accidently found them when exploring. In the other games there was only like 3 in each level. It was rele good the way secrets were in tr2. The only reason I even searched for secrets in legend was coz otherwise it would have been pointless even having the game coz the main game was too short. The other games focused mainly on the main game and had secrets as extra things u could go back for if u wanted to but legend had so much rewards u had to collect them and the game foucused mainly on rewards than the main game. The next tr should have a secret system thing like the one in tr2 and if u collect them all it should unlock a secret level like in tr3.

Thats what I thought about legend when I heard all the hype. I got the game the day it came out and I expected it to be at least one of the best trs but it was the worst one imo. Thats why I'll never expect the next tr to be the best or anywhere near it otherwise I'll be disappointed again. Yes CD do have alot of things to improve on and there doesn't rele need to be any more suggestions. Every suggestion that could be in the next tr has probably already been suggested in this thread already. I do expect the next game to improve upon legend but I dont expect it to be any better than any other tr.

Bring back the tradditinal controls. The original fighting controls, the new ones are porr and make fighting boring. Add more levels. Add a level skip cheat. Unlimited pistel ammo. Bring back the old health packs. Bring back the abbility to save where we want. No more cutscreens which you have to control. Expand Lara's hosue and make it accsessable from the start up screen.

Make the levels like the ones in Tomb raider 1 and 2. TR is NOT a shoot 'em up and never will be! Add more 'wildlife' to kill rather than gangs of men like in the early days! Lions, bats wolves, crocks and some weird beats and of corse mummies!

Bring back Larson and Pirrer! :D

This is what the real Tomb Raiders want!

Agree. Classic Tomb Raider was "menacing". Every step in classic TR was a potential challenge. Legend is just threatening and the enemies are bullies. Actually Legend Lara is a bit of a bully. Didn't like it.

My granddaughter (age 10) loves locking Winston in the freezer. She is afraid of him - cute, yes? (She only plays in the mansion).

Why not include ALL the outfits that were in AOD. They were all great. Mmmm... black top and camo pants...:cln:

I don't like the emphasis on her outfits. Do male heroes have a change of outfits? And, the developers of the new tomb raider are going to have to give priorities to the different elements of the game. I'd rather they spend time & money on locations, weapons, storyline, artifacts & historical facts, puzzles, vehicles and the mansion. I also don't want them to spend any time or money on Zip and Alistar. Just Lara and Winston.

I guess they should develop a separate game called, Lara - Up Close and Personal - where Lara, Zip and Alistar can shop til they drop. :)

-Most importantly keep up the stnadards of TRL and u wont go wrong.:)

I agree with everything! Keep Zip, Alister, headset defiantely! and show us more of the mansion Pls! Perhaps a garage would nice? With lots of cars, bikes, quads, etc...More weapons and give Lara a good knife...I loved the water outfit on AOD...as she had that knife holster. That should be added! Lara likes dangerous things! Knifes can help with puzzles, cutting things etc...add it but give it another usage! Let her beable to sit down on furniture or rocks! Perhaps standing by an object and pushing 'E' interaction button...Lara will sit. Her poor legs! And her back! lol

:D :D :D But I agree! Cannot wait for TR8. I want to know what's going to happen with her mother! Great Cliff Hanger! Lara looked fantastic going all crazy on evil Amanda. I felt so bad for L.

Anyway...Winston needs a voice too! I agree, add him in on their conversations and pls let him walk around the mansion! Why don't the other characters move around! I don't want a statue of Winston. I loved how he used to carry around her tea. That could be awesome, and maybe do things...clean + dust, walk around now and them, polish things, carry tea and eats and offer the others too.

Also Let us see what Lara's father at least looks like up close. I want to see a scene with both Lara and her father like in the TR movie. Perhaps bring her mother in...a flashback perhaps? Please! I'd love to hear his voice and how the family sound together. I loved the opening of TRL and lovedd little Lara with her mother.

This probably has been said before, but emphasizing it is important:

We want to be able to modify/create content for new Tomb Raider games!

Once every secret has been found and the main story done a few times a level editor at least would make the wait for the next installment alot easier and would keep the interest high for the franchise.

The Chronicles editor is downright brilliant, that kind of utility should come with release.

Please forgive me if there already exists an editor for Legend, I have searched for it and even tried using the Chronicles editor for it to no sucess.

Then I suggest you turn off your computer and play with your Barbie babes. Or just go and play The Sims.

This is an action game, remember? It used to have some sort of adventure part, but it never included straightening pillows anyway..

The ideas I was suggesting (and maybe I should have said so, because it was obviously missed) I would like to see in Lara's mansion only. It's because the mansion is so boring, they (Crystal Dynamics) need to do something to make it more interesting. I just thought it would be fun if Lara could do "normal" stuff in her house. Some of the best games I played (a long time ago, back when the Sierra "Quest" games existed) you could tinker with various objects of the scenery just to see what they did. Sometimes there were humorous results.

But I don't really expect these things to be integrated into the main part of the game. But it would be interesting to see Lara use vending machines to get drinks/snacks or buy them from a local stall. Basically, what I'm advocating here is interactive objects in the environment. Not static objects that do nothing anyway. And this was featured in a small way in TRVII. There's a soccer ball near the beginning of Nepal that Lara can kick around. And a dummy she can practice fighting.

The main animation I want to see is Lara being able to sit down in chairs (and other things, like Lara'sMan suggested (see above)). It adds nothing to the game, but I'd like to see it anyway.

And now, about you (these comments are directed to mono_blaine):

If you don't like my ideas, say so. But don't be unpleasant about it. You will find people are more likely to listen to you if the ideas you advocate are put forward calmly and rationally.

All you said was that they were bad ideas. You didn't even put forward a case for why. This is the mark of people who come to forums just to be abusive. In other words, FLAMING.

Please Crystal can we have more flashback levels :)

What about the whole of Avalon to explore, each area different than the next!

Puzzles that involve using logic and strategy not just physics and Lara's muscles.
How about some puzzles involving reading or collecting artifacts to use to open up new and maybe even hidden areas! :)

Puzzles where Lara has to translate ancient stone texts - example, Say Lara can use her gear to translate some of the text but the rest is hidden all over the level and players must use the flashlight to find it, of course it would be hidden extremly well and then record it in Lara's journal or maybe the player could wright it down themselves in a notebook marked 'Lara's Journal' you get free with the game - so we are actually involved in the puzzles! I like that kind of puzzle :) Its intuitive and involves the player into the game. And for replay value the text could change each time you play the game!

Try some different puzzles next time :)

I really found the field of vision to be quite limiting. I would really like to be able to look around freely again.

She also aims at where the camera is looking opposite to where she is looking (the obvious choice in my opinion would be to aim towards where she is looking, especially if we don't have control over the camera).

Climable and grabable looking surfaces should be grabable or climable! So what if it leads nowhere. There are other ways to keep the player from going to places than invisible walls.

I would love to see some hand to hand combat. Instead of just repeating a kick Lara could do up to 5 different moves when Pressing Y or Triangle.

Like:

-Side Kick (from Legend)
-Pushing Front Kick (Kick enemies to the ground then shoot them)
-Pistol Whip (stun the enemy and then shoot them)
-Punch (when lara is reloading she could smack an enemy right in the gob)
-Spinning Back Kick (Lara could show off doing this move which will be the same as the side kick)

Just add more variety on Mellee Combat, I really love the Kick in Legend and I always use it when I get into a fire fight

Okay, after running through other games of my collection, I would like to put few suggestions to improve combat system in TRL...

First of all, Lara is an explorer, not an armory...guns are her tools, not her assault kit. Weapon selection and the two weapon system are good in TRL (I could go strict and complain that assault rifle and grenade launcher should no be included...TR1 only had four specialized weapons), but how the weapons are selected and presented in the game are more focused on the fire power than its usefulness. I believe that each weapon should be more specialized so that all of them are useful during the course of the entire game. My idea was that let shotgun's range be reduced a little and pack more punch, but without the aerial assault option; and for the assault rifle, Lara can only roll with it, and must fire in burst and stationary in order to be extremely effective; let the grenade launcher has a single round magazine, with a much longer range and grenades that explode if someone touches it. I believe this will balance the weapon out and let players to develop different styles with each weapon, rather than pick up the best guns available.

Also, when Lara is fighting something, it's should not be focused on what gun is she carrying; it should be focused on her moves and the environment. The game should encourage player to use pistol at close range as the main combat option, only use her secondary weapon when the situation requires it. A lot of people tend to over use the assault rifle because players can hoard a lot of ammo in their backpack. The ammo Lara can carry with each secondary weapon is too much IMO, I really want that to be reduced like 1~2 clips in reserve only. But with that being said, leave a lot of ammo lying around in the combat zone for each type of weapons so that after heavy combat, so that players can replenish their stock more easily than in TRL. As for the environment, the level should be made more dynamic so that everything Lara does will affect the overall lay out of the level. Just shooting one pre-scripted column to crash guards is not enough...it should happen in some degree to all other structures that is present in the game by using physics.

Thirdly, damage model...I'm not asking for headshots, but seeing Lara can knock a heavily armored guard around and kill it with 9mm rounds at an extremely long range is not only funny, but also encourage people to hide behind covers and snipe...not Lara's style. Make it more realistic so that the stronger the ammo/weaker the armor, the more likely the target will be knock around; the longer the range, the less damage each weapon can deal until it can't deal any damage. Have the shotgun stun enemies for few seconds within the correct range, and only assault rifle can knock armored mercs around when they are hit. As for Lara, the difficulty in Tomb Raider mode is at medium difficulty at best, because the enemies are so easy to kill...double their HP or something when you put the combat at the highest difficulty...

Fourth, AI needs polish...I have seen them doing clever things, but a lot of mistakes too...for example having them always reach for a grenade and throw it back is clever, but always reach for grenades that is exploding is stupid as hell. Also, add team work elements in the AI, each enemies with different abilities will have different roles and coordinate their attack according to their roles...As for mercs' melee attack, change it so that they will push Lara away instead of throwing her on the ground...watching them do that without finishing the job is weird...

Fifth, Level design should be non-linear and give Lara's opponents a lot of ways to flank her and attack from behind. A lot of time in TRL, Lara just in a hallway with few mercs in front of her...no matter how clever the AI is, there is no way for them to show it if the levels are just too linear...

Finally, human enemies are good, but I want more types of enemy other than humans...I also want monsters and demons, because they are more scary to fight than with a bunch of mercs...mercs should be the smart ones, monsters are the mean ones :D

Tomb Raider Jay
31-05-06, 14:24
Open ended level design! :D

I would like if the next Tomb Raider game had level design like TR1.

The dangerous enviroment is there for Lara to explore, Lara has the skills and abilities to survive the challenges and puzzles in the enviroment and the player is left alone to get on with it. It worked in Tomb Raider and it would work in the next game too. :)

No random hints or tips just the player left alone to complete the levels and solve puzzles as Lara by themself. Zip and Alistar could be included but not so often maybe just the occasional transmission rather than every two minutes :)

Weather changing effects - every next-gen game will have them soon so put it in the next TR please ;)

Underwater sections - Please add more swimming, Legend was deprived of swimming - I'd like maybe an entire level set under the sea, like exploring the ancient sunkern ruins of Atlantica or something! :) who cares if its not realistic its a videogame they are not meant to be realistic!

DINOSAURS - Please can we have them back, maybe even a level set on remote tropical island heaving with dinos - its not realistic but again who cares?

;) good luck for TR8

Lost_Raider
31-05-06, 15:43
Puzzles should be more dynamic so that the solution for the puzzle in only limited by the imagination of the player and tools at Lara's disposal...a real good puzzle can't have walkthroughs, only strategies to solve it.

For example, Lara needs open a door, which is connected to a hidden switch somewhere. Well, Lara can pull the switch if players take their time to find it, but the game physics will also allow players to blow a hole through the door, grapple the chain above the door, take out the frame of the door, or another secret passage that can bypass that puzzle completely...heck, let the game randomly change the puzzle a little bit so that each time the player replay that level there will always be something different...like maybe the chain is broken the first time you visited; second time, the switch is not working; thrid time, the door is too thick to put a hole in; fourth time, the secret passage is blocked, etc...

The problem with the TRL puzzle is that it is still stuck in the trial and error mentaility despite the multiple solution presented with some of the puzzles...and all the blabbering hints and small scale make sure that you can't make error...

Damn...TR games are so unique in my game collection that I got to put more suggestions...

Okay...TR1 was a great game in 1996 not because of Lara, it is because at that time, Core manage to create the most realistic, most interactive, and the largest game environment that no one has ever seen before...You feel like you just visited a real tomb, or a real jungle back then...all the gameplay elements, the exploration, the puzzles, the combat, and of course, Lara, are the extenstion of that technological achievement...The bottom line to TR1 gameplay is to let the player to manipulate the game enviroment by the limit of their imagination...

If it wasn't for the TR1's game environment, exploration would be plain because there is nothing to see and nowhere to move...puzzles would be dull because the game environment will not be used to surpise you... combat would be boring because you will be focused solely on shooting, not on dodging/hiding...enemies will feel out of place...and Lara Croft will not exist because an aglie character will not be needed to manipulate the game environment to its full potential...

TRL lacks the wow factor because it did not create the most interactive game environment in 2006. Not much game environment can be manipulatable by the player in TRL...and almost all interaction has to be scripted via means of pressure plate, switches and cutscenes...linear level design restrict the players to come up with other possibility to interact with the game environment...CD sort gets the idea that the game environment is an important part of TR games...we can see that here and there with the implenmentation of physics, but they are too confined and limited. I believe CD developed TRL game environment to suit the puzzles and Lara, instead the other way around.

Bottom line? In future TR games, design the most interactive and realistic game environment first, then develope the rest of the gameplay elements to fit that game environment. The game envrionment should be as real as possible in a way that anything that happened at any location of a level will have a profound impact on the entire layout or ambiance of the level...Levels should be non-linear as well...chug a grenade or shooting at anything that looks unstable will destory it; any tree that recieved too much damage will fall down; enough explosive will punch a hole in a wall; any dsiturbance in creep old tombs will result bats or other animals running around - scripted or not; My hope is that if this is what they show in National Geographics, it can also be duplicated by TR8 game environment without using triggers or scripts...

Ian livingstone, BIG name in Eidos- left Eidos when SCi took over. He then joined SCi, and got another High-position.

Eidos funded Core, gave TR to CD. Core TR team turned into Circle Studios, Ian Livingstone is now also a Big name in Circle studios.

Bottom line, Eidos and Circle studios are connected. It's not an impossibility that the old TR team could work on a future TR :) :tmb:

I'm willing to bet 100 bucks that this will be a pipe dream...

Why do you have to drag the series back to the team that was tortured to death by it? I believe all memebers of the Circle team will have a heart attack and quit their job immediately if they find out they have to redo the series again...

Some how I feel the TR series is cursed...whichever developer that got stuck with it will be squeezed from all sides - hardcore fans, regular gamers, Eidos...and they will be constantly tortured by it until they collasp...and the series will be moved to curse another developer...

It is more easy for CD, Core, Circle or any developer for that matter to just make fun good games than a proper tomb raider game...

Core just want to make good games...TR was suppose to be just a good fun game and now it is a game that prevents them to flex their creativity...it is the chore that has to be done every year which will discredit themselves more and more in the game industry...

Okay firstly, Crystal have everything on AoD - concept art, level designs and the plot for ALL three of the trilogy's games!
If Crystal wanted to they could continue the AoD trilogy but Crystal said they wanted to move AWAY from AoD alltogether and start a fresh new direction for TR.

Crystal give Lara back her flairs for exploring dark caves and underground tunnels, I miss them :(

Maybe have the secrets out of sight so we actually have to find them rather than going 'Ooh a shiny bronze trinket and its right by Lara's backside'
They were too easy to find, even the gold ones!

Fully destructable enviroments like crumbling walls, falling floors and lowering celings please!!! :D

I did and there was nothing wrong with it imo. If u complain about the controls just get over it they're not that hard and took me about 5 mins to get used to. If u complain about bugs then I cant say anything coz I never experienced any bugs. AOD was a great game and it had the best story by far. It was very challenging and it felt like a tomb raider game to me. I was surprised by all the criticism it got. It was unfinished and if they had time to complete it it would have been the best tr ever or at least one of the best. I know for a fact it would have had duel pistols and a rele good mansion. You cant complain about tombs coz tr2 had even less tombs. What are u left to complain about now? If CORE had a few more months it would have been one of the best trs and possibly the best. If CORE still made them we'd actually get to play a tr game and not just a simple action game. Its Eidos' fault that its gone downhill coz first they rush CORE and they release and unfinished game and after bad reviews on one game they dump CORE for no good reason so anybody who makes tr now doesn't know how to make a real tr. I blame Eidos for trs downfall.

I've played all tomb raiders and while i do love legends, there are some classic stuff i would like to see in the next game.

I'm currently replaying tomb raider 2. And i would like block puzzles to be used. Sure, she can push tiny boxes half her size but wheres the huge blocks she has to push or pull hard to move. They made for some good puzzles.

And bring back the ability to use vehicles in the actual levels. The ability to get on/off whenever like TR2. You use them to get past parts of the actual level and can get off anytime. Not just have them for chase areas. Also more areas and longer as well. The time trial was nice in legend, but that just makes the levels short because you prob. dont exspect people to race through levels for more than 30 minutes at a time so you kept them short. I've been playing TR2 for quite some time and still am a few levels away from the end. The town level for instance was quite long and spread out into several 'mini levels' you could say. And each section it seems took just as long to beat as a whole complete level in legend. The underwater level is just huge. So many levels to the water area. many parts of the ship, ect. It took me several hours at least just to get through them. And the very last area had basically one half of a ship in one half of the area and another part of a ship, the bottom, coming out from ground. it was just one huge area and took quite a while going around it, going back and forth through it in the same area, ect.

In legend it's just basically a straight path. We need areas we return to once somethings been activated. Bring back keys and that kinda thing. Theres really no exploration and your not dropped in a big area, like my above example and you really have no clue where to start. Thats the fun of tomb raider. trying to figure out how to get from one area to the next. I'd love to see more areas like this.

And the traps, deaths. The actual traps in legend that aren't part of the button pressing scenes, are kinda slow and give you warning and enough reaction time to avoid them. Past games, the traps happened quickly and you had to react really fast and i just dont feel that in legends. And bring back the save whereever you are at any time like past tomb raiders. Have lots of traps. Take the very first level of TR2.

There are so many traps that when you first reach them, theres a very good chance your die cause you aren't exspecting it. First you enter hall and boulders come after you. then u jump over spikes only to slide down into a room where the walls close in on you. I just loved all the traps and have like 86 saves so far in TR2 and not even finished yet. Theres just so many ways to die, and i love that. it makes you be careful when you enter room if you haven't saved in awhile.

In legend you can just run whereever cause if you die you basically start right there and that really takes the fun out of it. it makes it too easy. If tr2 basically started you at where you die it would really not be all that fun. The next game should add alot more to it and be similiar to TR2 and TR3. Sure, big square blocks and keys just lying around in caves or whatever may not be 'realistic' but i dont really care about it looking like real life. I say take away time trial and make the next games areas huge and complex and bring back the classic save system with no checkpoints.

I agree with everything here! You actually made me aware of many things I didn't actually realise were missing. I loved TR2, but it's been years since I last played it. But now that you mentioned all this...I cannot help want the next game to be more about Exploration, puzzles and buttons spread through out the level, going back and forth within a level and not just forward like TRL. I loved getting and feeling lost in a TR game...What happened to that? Even though some levels did feel absolutely huge, The ghana, Nepal and Japan in particular, I still didn't feel lost and alone. Please let Lara turn off her communication device at least through half the level. I like having Zip and Alister to witness Lara's great moves and some of the incredible sites and mechanisms, but I do wish she could have at least half a level on her own again, and to feel totally lost and confused.

But TRL is amazing anyhow! I absolutely adore it and feel it's the best TR ever!

AOD sucked. Everybody I know throws down the controls in frustration after a few minutes. I don't care how good the story was, the controls ruined it. The worst entry in the series. TRL was a good solid game, not a classic, but a good game nonetheless. TR8 just needs longer levels (or more of the shorter ones), more variety of enemies, and harder puzzles.

I can come up with god knows how many things wrong with legend but only about 2 or 3 things wrong with AOD. Controls aren't as bad as people make them out to be and if any game sucked its legend. Legend needs alot more improvements upon that longer levels and harder puzzles. It needs to actually be made into a proper tr game again. Its all been said before so theres really no need for me to repeat it.

I can think of a LOT of things wrong with AOD. And yes, controls ARE important. It's your link with the character and the "world" of the game. I'm 42 and have been playing games for a LONG time and this was definitely one of the worst controls in any game I've ever played. I gave it many chances and tried to get into it but the controls were a huge issue. The framerate slowed down several times (she was running in slow motion at several points in the game). I'll take the imperfection of TRL over the steaming pile of crap that was AOD any day. And I wouldn't be in the minority, believe me. The story was a lot better but it was an unfinished game. If AOD was so good then why did it nearly sink the Tomb Raider Franchise? AOD along with TR5 almost killed the TR series. In case you didn't know AOD is widely regarded as the WORST game in the series and the game that almost ended the series. At least TRL ensures that will get another game. It was a good game. Not great. MANY missed opportunities and hopefully CD will listen to the feedback. I didn't say it was perfect but at least the TR series isn't a laughing stock anymore.

I'm tried of compass...I never find it too useful...make it GPS...at least it keep track of all the area she has explored...

As for AOD control...all I remember was that I want to throw out the computer when I was playing, then I realized that I was playing the game on a friends computer...that game could make me lose 3000 bucks...

My advice to CD would be to continue, for the most part. Legend was a phenominal game in many, many, many different areas! I feel that if the battle system and boss fights were improved, the game would be flat out ground breaking!

Over all, the next game should continue the flow that Legend had. The story was great as was most of the gameplay mechanics. I'd like to commend CD on their level designs! Amazing! Especially in Nepal, with the jumps and everything. I'd love to see that played upon more in TR8.

The puzzles, however, need to be a little more advanced. I'd say the best puzzle in the game was in England, with the bell. That was very clever and well thought out. A lot more compelling than the usual puzzles, which consisted of mainly just moving blocks around. The puzzles in the mansion were incredible as well! I'd like to see more creative puzzles as such done in TR8.

The battle system needs changed almost completely. Thankfully, battling is not that in important in a TR game, but that does not mean it shouldn't be perfected. I think less battles would actually be better. Especially since in order to complete a level you'd finish off with a boss fight. I wasn't fond of this.

Speaking of boss fights... I find that they were Legend's biggest flaw. I don't think there was a single boss fight I actually enjoyed. I'm not saying TR8 shouldn't have any bosses, but I'd recomment a lot less. Not only that, but I would replace possible bosses with something different. For example, when endign a level, instead of defeating a boss you should be required to either solve a time consuming and difficult puzzle. Maybe even within a certain amount of time? I don't necessarily mean puzzles that leave you stuck and waiting forever because you can't figure them out. Instead I mean a puzzle that is heavily interactive. Something that requires you to do a lot of different things, your mind being one of them.

I think that upon finishing a large level, one shouldn't think, "Finally, I'm glad that's over!" Instead, they should feel proud of themselves for being able to complete such a difficult, yet amusing task.

Other than that any other advice would be entirely subjective. CD did an incredible job with TRL. It was new, yet still captured the essence of what TR is all about. I can't wait to see more exciting TR games from them. :tmb:

Edit: Some more things i remembered. Weapon accuracy for sure. I would use manual amd and the target would be directly on the person, but it wouldn't hit him! For some reason they expected you to be way to cloe to hit! Realistically I was at a proper distance, but TRL requires you to be point blank practically.

Also the killing needs to be improved. It just seemed comical to me that I'd shoot a gut in the head a million times before he'd die. I think the next TR game needs to focus on what shots are more lethal than others. Head shots should be instant kills. Additionally, the bullets should do more damage. I played on hard and I wanted the enemies to be mroe difficult; however, there are other ways to make them harder to kill than just making them absorb bullets.

I keep saying this but I must stress it.

The TR 'feeling' is the following formula:
-Scaryness/freakiness
-Hard Puzzles. Please put a few Switch and key puzzles in too :)

Thats what made Tomb Raider soo enjoyable.

LET US SEE LARA TRAVEL!

She just teleports in TRL, one moment you are in tokyo, BAM now you are in the himalayas. In TR2 we saw how she travelled often, going in planes crashing etc, it helps connect the levels, because in TRL they feel so disconnected.

Mattster,

I was thinking the same thing. How cool would it be to get on a plane, and fly it to a destination. She can pilot a plane, so why not incorporate it! Even if it's just taking off and landing with a few seconds of flying time.

Crystal - if the next game must have driving sections could they be more like the Venice boat chase from TR 2 :)

The Venice boat chase in TR2 was cool and exciting - not lame like the motor bike sections in Legend.

Try to put the driving sections in the actual levels themselves - rather than making them levels on there own because they are too weak and pointless that way. Keep them short and snappy too, not long and boring like the Kasakhstan bike section - that went on for way too long.... :(

Maybe Lara could get out of the boat and explore secret areas on the way to her goal or mission objective - that way, the driving sections would be more free - roaming and enjoyable :D - rather than the pointless drive to the next part of the level, motor bike sections in Legend :(

Good luck for TR8! :)
