Of how to cut onions without crying your eyes out? :D

Note: If you've never prepared raw onions, or have never encountered an onion, this probably isn't the thread for you.

Random question, but I'm quite curious about this. When we were doing cookery in school years ago, chopping onions, the whole class was in tears.

The cook would glance at me and say 'You're wearing glasses, you should be alright' - as if the wounded onion was squirting out some kind of invisible tear-inducing venom. I learned later that she was wrong, perhaps unsurprisingly. :p

This leads on to my questions:

- What is it about the onion that makes people cry?
- How do you avoid the crying - got any techniques in particular?

Excuse my weirdness. :cln:

P.S. I know the secret. :D

cut them under water or use an extreemly sharp knife or a food processor (the joys of modern technology)

Wear Goggles. That's what I did one time! Then my mum just told me to cut it under running water: a tap.

Did the goggles work? :D

Keep the room well ventilated as if you were going to be spraypainting or soldering (open the door and windows and turn on the fan vent if you have one) and use a very sharp smooth knife (with no teeth or serrations).

It's the onion juice and onion vapour that makes your eyes water, and cutting it under running water stops it from being able to release this (holding a chopping board under a tap and trying to cut an onion up without losing all the bits down the drain or soaking everything in sight is a bit tricky though).

Alternatively, wear swimming goggles. :D

*has just made tomato & onion sauce for ham pizza-wraps*

I'm just careful not to breathe through my nose, otherwise the smell turns on the waterworks. :D

It works for me, which is lucky since I don't have any swimming goggles. :o

When I cut onions I just cut it really fast and the vapor dosen't has time to actually reach me

Lucky you, you should've seen my class after the cooking session. They were all rushing to the sink to wash their eyes. :p

That must be some pretty nifty knife-work. :D

i light three little candles and place them around the board. works for me and not as tricky as cutting them in a sink.

Well I use the multi-cutter for onions - :ton:
CAUSE BIG GIRLS DON'T CRY

small piece of advice: pill the onions, cut them in half and put them in water for half an hour before starting to cut them. It reduces "crying" more than 50%
