View Full Version : TR Movie vs Game...NO COMPARISON

The tomb raider movie was great. It was well done, and had lot's of action. But, I couldn't compare it to the game. It seems to me that everything had changed from the game!
1) Lara's butler is named Winston...'NOT' Hilary!
2) Lara's outfit is a GREEN shirt, not black.
3) What's with the skull on her belt?
4) Brunette hair, NOT black
5) Brown eyes, not green
6) at the end Lara fought without pistols
7) House, different!!!
I know I'm sounding really snobby, but a true tomb raider fan would notice this - and why shouldn't I be upset with it? I have certain expectations...If I had madet the movie, I would have made it as close to the game and to Lara as possible!!!!!! I hope the next one is even better....

Katie,l agree. The first 10 or so minutes was pure TR[with the robot]what a shame the rest went down hill. What happened to the Back Pack?,and yes,l missed the green t-shirt.And l would have really liked to have heard some of the Original TR music in the soundtrack somewhere, even if it was only a couple of bars.Disliked that outfit she wore up in Greenland[the pale suit]Not Lara at all to my mind.

yep, with you both on this one.
Well, the game is certainly not the movie, that's for sure. But, you gotta remember that Lara Croft is a UK invention and then Hollywood picks it up. What do you expect. I do agree with you all, but I think Hollywood didn't do a bad job with this one.
Keep Raiding!

The film may not have been exactly the same as the game but it was still a great film, so what if she wears different coloured clothes does it matter... No... who cares it was still a great film. :D
i think if the film is good the little details dont matter as much but hearing the original soundtrack would be cool and if not the green tshirt then maybe those blue and black combats

<let's out a huge sigh of relief> Woo! I'm so glad some ppl actually agree with me! At another forum I posted something like this one, and I got alot of back talk and rude comments!!! But, hey it's just my opinion...
Yes, some music from the soundtrack would have been great - I had my ears open the whole time in the movie for it, but was disapointed when it didn't come! :(
And, I agree with Lyn...I think Lara should have had her bomber jacket on...and about hollywood taking it over....it's too bad they have to ruin some things...I think all of us tomb raider buddies should get together and make our own tomb raider movie!! Make it like the game, not like a whole new person!!!
That's another thing - I think that the name of the movie was as close to the game as they got!!! Oh well...I'm sorry if I'm complaining too much, but I guess I was disapointed.....
****I think Lara Weller should have played lara in the movie, what do you think?***
I don`t know if any of you have seen Star Trek:The Motion Picture, but it was pretty bad.It lost all the great warmth of the Original Series.Any-way,the Powers That Be got a lot of feed-back about what the Fans thought Should have been done, and the next movie-The Wrath Of Khan, was one of the best of them.I`m hoping that the next TR Movie may be like that.Still a pity about the music.Darth Vader has his own theme,James Bond does too.So does the USS.Enterprise.So has Lara Croft. Why not use it?I rather liked the butler though. He was actually a bit under-used.Should have combined his character with the hi-tech know-how of the other Dipstick living in the caravan and dumped that character.Where did he come from any-way?
Simon West said in an interview that he had to create other carachters around lara cos knowone lives in the world on their own. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
The games are definately better. The movie was ok, but I prefer the games. The studios are bound to make a second movie because of the money they made from the first. As a Tomb Raider fan, I'd rather they didn't...
Sorry that you received rude comments in the other forum, I was hoping the movie would be more like the video games also.

I have to agree...I wish they didn't bother to make another one...sure they made lots of money on the first...but us tomb raider fans were expecting it to be like the games!!!!! It's disapointing when they take something, and make it into something else...anyway, if they do make a second one, I might be hesitant to watch.....
*Katie*
Katie - are you going to buy the DVD? or the video tape?
BTW, a while back someone had posted that Lara actually wore the skull and crossbones buckle in the video games and had a picture of it. I think it was TR3.

Well, yeah - I'll probably end up buying the video casette....
The comment you made about TR3..I'm on the very last level, and I have yet to see the skull, do you know where it is??
*Katie*
Sorry Katie, I tried looking for the picture but all the websites I usually go to for pictures are not working right now, but I think the picture I saw was a screenshot from TR3 with Lara leaning forward and running. It might have been when TR3 came out. My guess she probably wore it in the Navada section where she has to deal with the military people. Sorry I couldn't find it, I'll keep on looking.

Hey Katie! nice to see youre here! im surprised at the reactions here, too(kinda going back to the begining of this topic). i just wish that they kept laras kooler glasses she used in some of the tr games and the comics. o well, its to late now, right?
Hello all,
I think the main problem with the film was that Lara Croft has always appeared in the game (in AVI /cut scenes as well as the FMV clips) as a very sincere and considerate person; not the smug upperclass social ingrate that most of us wouldn't even want to meet as she was in the film.
Also, what was all that rubbish with John Voigt about? I certainly didn't want her to bring him back to life.
Doc
Hi L-Cpl Jones. Someone had a screenshot from one of the games that had a close up of Lara's buckle. On the buckle was a skull and cross-bones. I was trying to find a picture with the buckle but no luck. I went back to some of the first websites I visited but also no luck. I'll have to keep on looking. :(

Hi all.I`m with doc she did seem arrogant in the movie not like the lara we know. The Jon Voight thing i thought she should bring him back, as in TRC who is that in the churchyard when you see the options and by her statue at her home?as for her outfit maybe it was washday and thats all she had to wear. :D I certainly hope lyn is right and the next movie will take into account the fans wishes with the story and the music.Hilary was a goood start but the character could have been given more to do.What a waste of Chris Barrie who played him.But all in all not a bad first attempt. :D

Gee,I dunno,I really liked the fact that the movie was able to take a lot from the games, yet still managing to have its own separate identity.
I thought all her costumes were great. The traditional costumef from the game might have looked a bit campy in a movie.
I do wish that Lara's theme from the games would have been used.
And I liked that the movie took on a spiritual aspect that we didn't see too often in the games.
All in all,the games were what got me into TR,but I loved how the movie was able to take it all to another level. It was a nice evolution, and I'll be waiting in line for parts 2 and 3. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Yeah - I'll probably see the others too, it won't hurt! I just wish they had at least 'one' outfit from the game - the one we're all used to: her jungle outfit...I just love that one! When someone says lara Croft...I picture her in that suit...but then again, like someone else said "Maybe it was laundry day!"
The only thing I was truly angry about, was her butler...in the game it's an old guy called Winston..in the move it's a younger guy and called Hillary! That just boils my brains!!!
Oh well - hopefully they'll fix things like that....<fingers crossed>

Maybe Hilary is some relation to Winston?Isn`t it usual to keep it in the family? The name thing needs explaining http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

They used Chris Barrie AKA Rimmer for comedic relief and his potential as an actor. To be honest I would prefer Barrie than some old duffer regardless of what the butler in the game is like, all he does in the game is offer you tea, fart then groan. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif :D
Hi lost_anakin, its good to see you again. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
 i have a question for anybody?
i have the soundtrack + the score by"gaeme revell" and there is one piece of music not on any of them, it is where lara is rowing in the kiyak and she meets the budist monk and tells him she needs a phone, does anybody know what its called?

I know the song you're talking about. That was one of my favorite musical moments from the film.I too was a bit disappointed that it wasn't on the soundtracks.
I can tell you this about it:that melody line you hear is a guitar line from "Elevation".Not sure if you knew that or not. When U2 played the recent VMA's,they performed "Elevation" and used a bit of that Cambodian track from the movie at the beginning of the song. That was cool.

I Liked the movie as a whole. I didn't expect it to be exactly like the games or anything but Lara's backpack was one thing I think they shouldn't have left out..it is a big part of Lara's character...even if they did change a lot of details like the color of the clothes and the belt etc. I am a big fan of the TR games series and I just didn't try to expect too much from the film and I'm going to buy the DVD cus I can't wait for the behind the behind the scenes stuff. :D

Hi everyone!
I haven't read all the topic (for the long of it) so I'm not sure if someone has said this, but I'll still say it...
do you think that it would have been better if they'd had done a TR Movie but all in CGI??? I mean like Final Fantasy, that way we could had seen the original Lara, the Lara we all know, OUR Lara....
In my opinion that would've been the best!
(though I really like Angelina Jolie, but...)
Is it our fault we were born here? Why must everything take place in the U.K.
Then again the movie was American :D
Oh wait, is that really something worth bragging about
At least we can still play the game :D
well, the backpack was there! Just in the Cambodia scenes but it was there, it was black but it was there...
what would I like in the next movie is that she appears with the blacksuit that Lara uses in TR5 in the last levels, that would be nice, and that if they're going to put a scene of the crash of the plane it would be terrific if they use the same outfit that the young Lara wears in the game...that would be soo cool...
and about the music, I also loved that part when she arrives at that Cambodian temple, that was very nice...
now, I heard in some parts of the movie the "Lara's theme", it's just mixed up with some other music but it is there I heard Lara there, I heard her theme, its just that they mixed it and they arreange it with some other music, nothing more nothing else...
(IT'S A LITTLE LONG, BUT READ IT) I haven't seen it yet, but I was really dissapointed with all the changes. WHY do they like to change everything, all the time they are changing stuff. Why do they make up a whole story, and then totally change it. Where is Winston? He's lived with her for 16 years and now he's gone? And what about Von Croy, I really liked that fellow. And the cloth, she had pretty nice cloth in the movie, but IT'S NOT HER CLOTH, no the ones we know, not the cloth that says "Lara Croft" wherever you see them, the cloth I've been hoping to see on some real-flesh acting Lara. And the belt? She had a most beautiful belt, and they put that creepy skull.
The Final Fantasy style is a good idea, but for series, you know... Every week a TR Episode with OUR Lara, Lara with green T-shirt, with Brown pants, with brounette hair, with a cute backpack!

"Wonderful speech Werner Von Braun"
<Applauds>
"I agree 110% with you - that's it...come on everyone, let's go kick their butts, and make them do another movie the RIGHT WAY!!!
For goodness sake, people - it's a movie! If they decided to change Lara's clothes in the game, what would you do? I think the movie was brilliant, and AJ did an awesome job in the role. People change their clothes, OK? (Well, I know I do, though I can't speak for you!) Just lighten up and enjoy the film for what it is.

Wonderful speech NukeFree
<Applauds>
I agree 110% with you!
I know that they TRIED to make a movie about Lara, but it is difficult to put a character that only has live IN games...but they TRIED, that's the most important...
I have to say that I really liked the movie, as for a movie it was really good...

well it would be pretty boring if you had to watch lara just running around all alone pushing buttons and crap like the game. so they had to add some characters to make it interesting. but i wish they couldve at least kept her backpack the same, thought the new one was kinda interesting. and even though is didnt show much, the belt buckle was, um... different. but it was ok. but it would have been at least kinda kool to like catch a glimps of her original outfit like in the background. and i dun know why they changed her dads name. but i liked SIMON. that fight was awsome. but hey, you never know, the next one we may see more tomb raider game material ;) .
thanks!
I'm not saying that they have to do "exactly" the same thing, but there were too many changes... Of course, people change their cloth... and Lara "did" change her cloth in the movie as well as she did in the game... but she could at least in a small part at the end, wear her "tipical" Lara outfit... AJ is a great actress, and perfect to play Lara... But if she did all that to look like lara, she could have worn red lens contacts so we can look at both of them and say: Definetly, they are the same person... It's a cool movie, but some times they change too many stuff.
P.S: Don't think I'm a Nazi, because I'm NOT. They called me Nazi in another forum, please don't think so because I'm not, as well as the original VB wasn't. Thanks.
Yep, Von Braun words it just right, I loved the movie, and ofcourse I was dissapointed in the differences. But it wasn't so much the changes, but the amount of changes made. Besides, weren't her parents both stuck up wealthy people, and Lara hated the rich life, that's what it said in the first game. And notice it says BOTH parents, MOTHER and father are still around. That was just odd to me.
And honestly Von Braun, anyone who plays Tomb Raider can't be a nazi anyway, right?
